The new program, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111229171134\/http:\/\/www.antd.nist.gov\/usgv6\/testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USGv6 Test Program<\/a>, will be run by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nist.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NIST<\/a><\/strong>) will require all network hardware and software vendors to <strong>pass IPv6 compliance and interoperability tests<\/strong> before they can sell their products to the U.S. federal government market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-110533\" title=\"NIST logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nist_logo1.jpg?resize=110%2C38&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"NIST logo\" width=\"110\" height=\"38\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nist_logo1.jpg?resize=75%2C26&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/nist_logo1.jpg?w=141&amp;ssl=1 141w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The NIST IPv6 test plan covers basic IPv6 functionality as well as related standards such as IP Security (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPsec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IPsec<\/a>), <a title=\"Internet Key Exchange\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_Key_Exchange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Internet Key Exchange<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc4306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IKEv2<\/a> ), <a title=\"Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dynamic_Host_Configuration_Protocol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DHCPv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DHCPv6<\/a>), <a title=\"Open Shortest Path First\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_Shortest_Path_First\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia noreferrer\">Open Shortest Path First<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OSPFv3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OSPFv3<\/a>), Border Gateway Protocol (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BGP4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BGP4+<\/a>) and multicast requirements in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multicast_Listener_Discovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLDv2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The USGv6 program will allow vendors to run IPv6 compliance tests in their own labs as long as it is accredited by NIST, but they must run IPv6 interoperability testing in someone else&#8217;s lab. Erica Johnson, Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iol.unh.edu\/services\/testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory<\/a> told <em>NetworkWorld<\/em>, &#8220;The way that the NIST profile is going to work is that conformance testing can be done in an accredited first-party [vendor], second-party [buyer] or third-party [independent] lab&#8230;But the interoperability testing must be done in a second-party or third-party lab.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The time frame for the USGv6 Test Program is tight. NIST is expected to publish this week [July 31] the final version of its IPv6 test specifications aka <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111229171134\/http:\/\/www.antd.nist.gov\/usgv6\/testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Special Publication 500-273<\/a> and to finalize its test plan in November 2009. Testing labs are to be accredited before the end of the calendar year. Network vendors will have six months to get their routers, operating systems, firewalls and other security systems through IPv6 testing before\u00a0the federal government&#8217;s<strong> July 2010 acquisition deadline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By<strong> July 2010, federal agencies will be required to buy only hosts, routers, and network security systems that have been tested for IPv6 compliance<\/strong>. Vendors must issue a &#8220;Suppliers&#8217; Declaration of Conformity&#8221; that states host and router products have been tested for IPv6 compliance and interoperability, while security products must undergo functional IPv6 testing. All of the testings must be done in NIST-accredited labs.<\/p>\n<p><em>rb-<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s about time &#8211; I have included IPv6 requirements in RFP&#8217;s for over 6 years. It is amazing to watch the vendors tap-dance around what IPv6 compatibility means. Only some of these products from <a title=\"Cisco Systems\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/CiscoSystems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener twitter noreferrer\">Cisco<\/a> or <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Foundry<\/span> Brocade are IPv6 compatible depending on the image you buy.
