That works out to about <strong>1\/3 of your life<\/strong> (in the U.S.) spent unconscious. From a productivity standpoint, sleep is quite literally a waste of your time. Despite being non-productive, sleep has fought its way through countless years of adaptation in nearly every living animal on Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalisland.net\/health-guide\/what-is-snoring-and-how-do-we-combat-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112018\" title=\"sleep plays a vital role in the functioning of nearly every organ system in the body\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sleeping-and-Snoring-2.gif?resize=124%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"sleep plays a vital role in the functioning of nearly every organ system in the body\" width=\"124\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>So <strong>sleep must be important<\/strong>, right? It is. Researchers have found that sleep plays a vital role in the functioning of <a href=\"https:\/\/livelovefruit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sleep-deprivation-01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>nearly every organ<\/strong> system<\/a> in the body. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12603781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> from 2003 found that just one night of total <strong>sleep deprivation<\/strong> is the cognitive equivalent of being <strong>legally drunk<\/strong>. According to the researchers, people who slept:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>6 hours<\/strong> each night reached the impairment level after <strong>10 days<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>4 hours<\/strong> each night reached the impairment level after <strong>just 3 days<\/strong>. After 10 days, they were as cognitively impaired as if they had gone two days with no sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eight hours <\/strong>saw virtually <strong>no change<\/strong> to their cognitive performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Americans need sleep<\/h3>\n<p>This explains why some people feel more tired than others at work. Errors and ineffectiveness can occur when team members are running on empty \u2026 Consider the underlying causes of why employees are sleepy. If it\u2019s because they\u2019re stretched too thin, retention issues could soon follow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>rb-<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So why does this matter? If you regularly get six hours of sleep and feel just fine, why should you waste your time getting more ZZZ&#8217;s?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/vcresearch.berkeley.edu\/faculty\/matthew-walker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Walker<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepdiplomat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">director of the sleep and neuroimaging lab<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berkeley.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of California, Berkeley<\/a> explains,\u00a0 \u201c<strong>You don\u2019t know you are sleep deprived when you are sleep deprived<\/strong>, &#8230;\u00a0 That\u2019s why so many people fool themselves into thinking they are one of those people who can get away with six hours of sleep or less.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Professor Walker argues that there\u2019s <strong>no way you can effectively train yourself to need less sleep<\/strong>.
