Well, it&#8217;s time to <strong>relax<\/strong> because\u00a0<strong>Windows 95<\/strong> is now available as<strong> an app<\/strong> for Mac, Windows, and Linux.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/8\/23\/17773180\/microsoft-windows-95-app-download-features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/api.slack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slack developer<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/felixrieseberg.com\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Felix Rieseberg<\/a> is responsible for this ingenious app.\u00a0The operating system is encased in <a href=\"https:\/\/electronjs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electron<\/a>, a framework for building cross-platform apps with HTML and CSS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170829122738\/http:\/\/www.pcworld.com:80\/article\/3027904\/windows\/windows-95-is-back-right-inside-your-browser.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"95 windows desktop noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Windows 95 desktop\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.techhive.com\/images\/article\/2016\/02\/windows-95-100642545-large.jpg?resize=429%2C321&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Windows 95 desktop\" width=\"429\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a>Now nostalgia lovers can play around with <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lAkuJXGldrM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows 95<\/a> in an electron app. Mr. Rieseberg has published the source code and app installers for this project <strong>on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/felixrieseberg\/windows95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Github<\/a><\/strong>, and classic apps like <strong><span class=\"st\">Solitaire<\/span><\/strong>, Wordpad, phone dialer, MS Paint, and Minesweeper all run as you\u2019d expect. Sadly, Internet Explorer isn\u2019t fully functional as it simply refuses to load pages. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/08\/28\/microsoft_round_up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">does hav<\/a>e <strong>floppy disk support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As Mr. Rieseberg suggests, if you were hoping to<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xDXqmdFxofM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">run Doom<\/a><\/strong>, you&#8217;re probably better off doing it through an actual virtualization app, but it surprisingly does work. He admits it only worked well &#8220;by accident and was mostly a joke.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.levelgamingground.com\/doom-the-original-review.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-103547\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Doom.jpg?resize=150%2C85&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Doom.jpg?resize=150%2C85&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Doom.jpg?resize=75%2C42&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Doom.jpg?w=580&amp;ssl=1 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The app is only 129MB in size. Once it\u2019s running it surprisingly only takes up around 200MB of RAM, even when running all the old Windows 95 system utilities, apps, and games. If you run into any issues with the app you can always reset the Windows 95 instance inside the app and start over again.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy this trip down memory lane.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>OK &#8211; Cut Windows 95 some slack, the 20something-year-old OS is the first step-up from 16-bit DOS to 32-bit Windows NT. But more importantly, it introduced the Windows graphical user interface that so many of us have a love\/hate relationship with.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As you&#8217;d figure, running Windows 95 these days is mostly just for a laugh. Windows 95 is still popular after 20 years.
