But Santa\u2019s most <strong>famous reindeer<\/strong>, Rudolph didn&#8217;t even exist until 1939. That character ended up being Rudolph, who was an immediate hit with the kiddies. Montgomery Ward gave out <strong>2.4 million copies<\/strong> of the Rudolph booklet in the first year alone. In 1948 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleischerstudios.com\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fleischer Studios<\/strong><\/a>, the home of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210310005042\/http:\/\/bettyboop.com\/fan-club-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Betty Boop<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/popeye.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Popeye<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210611215341\/https:\/\/www.syfy.com\/syfywire\/watch-a-look-back-at-the-superman-fleischer-cartoons-of-the-1940s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Superman<\/strong><\/a> created a Rudolph cartoon as an advert for Montgomery Ward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He could have been Rollo.\u00a0<\/strong>Rudolph might have had another name. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/12\/25\/256579598\/writing-rudolph-the-original-red-nosed-manuscript\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert L. May<\/a>, a copywriter for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/12\/29\/business\/montgomery-ward-to-close-its-doors.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montgomery Ward\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/mail-order-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mail-order catalog<\/a> division, who wrote the story considered a number of names. Santa\u2019s new reindeer might have been named Rollo, Reginald, Romeo, or Rodney until they settled on Rudolph.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rudolph nearly lost his red nose.<\/strong>\u00a0At first, Rudolph <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180303181303\/http:\/\/www.planetchristmas.com:80\/rudolph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"montgomery ward\u2019 noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Montgomery Ward\u2019\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140106025154\/http%3A\/\/planetchristmas.com\/siteimages\/MontgomeryWard-300x122.jpg?resize=148%2C60&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Montgomery Ward\" width=\"148\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a>used a different method to guide Santa\u2019s sleigh. Instead of having a red, glowing nose that cuts through the fog, Mr. May considered giving Rudolph <strong>large, headlight-like eyes<\/strong> that would light the way. After much consideration, he decided mean kids would be more likely to make fun of a red nose than huge eyes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He has a son named Robbie. <\/strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a> developed three cartoons based on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0219086\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudolph&#8217;s offspring<\/a><\/strong>, but the name of Robbie&#8217;s famous dad is never actually mentioned. The plotline tells us that the villain of the series, Blitzen, can&#8217;t stand to hear Rudolph&#8217;s name. In reality, it&#8217;s because the BBC couldn&#8217;t get permission to use it (or didn&#8217;t want to pay to use it). Fox Family ran the show in the U.S. for a few years in the early 2000s with re-dubbed voices, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001774\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Stiller<\/a> as Robbie, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000424\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hugh Grant<\/a> as Blitzen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005453\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britney Spears<\/a> as Donner, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0004951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Garrett<\/a> as Prancer.<\/p>\n<p>Robert May&#8217;s brother-in-law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songhall.org\/profile\/Johnny_Marks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Johnny Marks<\/strong><\/a> who wrote the lyrics for some of the most beloved holiday songs including, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t3HJgCcSUqQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rockin&#8217; Around the Christmas Tree<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MVu4c7dhDRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Run, Rudolph, Run<\/a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DtVxFi9C0RA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Have a Holly Jolly Christmas<\/a>,&#8221; also wrote the lyrics and melody for &#8220;Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rudolph-Red-Nosed-Reindeer-Limited\/dp\/B016F8BVS0\/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_15_img_2\/133-4257315-3536719?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=W1JSE5Z4K58VTGCEPN31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"autry gene noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"Gene Autry alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/71Ntsbje-2L._SX425_.jpg?resize=121%2C121&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Gene Autry\" width=\"121\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a>The song was recorded 10 years after the character was invented. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001078\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bing Crosby<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/it-could-have-been-reginald-red-nosed-reindeer-180953390\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">turned dow<\/a>n the song and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneautry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gene Autry<\/strong><\/a> nearly passed on the tune, but his wife urged him to give it a shot. &#8220;Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer&#8221; became number 1 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billboard<\/a> pop singles chart in 1949. In the Rudolph story, the author turned a mark of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_antisemitism_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">antisemitism<\/a> into a point of pride. Mr. May and company made the stereotypical Jewish nose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/how-a-shy-jewish-boys-nose-issues-gave-america-rudolf-for-christmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noble at Christmas-time<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rudolph\u2019s red nose first has other reindeer <a class=\"LinkWrapper LinkWrapper--external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.the-north-pole.com\/carols\/rudolph.html\">laughing<\/a>, calling \u201chim names,\u201d never letting \u201cpoor Rudolph play in any reindeer games.\u201d \u201cThen one foggy Christmas Eve\u201d Rudolph with his \u201cnose so bright\u201d helps guide Santa\u2019s \u201csleigh tonight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Author May explained,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Today children all over the world read and hear about the little deer who started out in life as a loser, just as I did.
