{"id":89670,"date":"2018-12-10T21:08:25","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T02:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbachnet.wwwmi3-ss40.a2hosted.com\/index.php\/"},"modified":"2024-05-24T18:42:53","modified_gmt":"2024-05-24T22:42:53","slug":"please-take-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbach.net\/index.php\/please-take-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Please Take Lotus Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bit-tech.net\/news\/tech\/software\/ibm-sells-software-packages-to-indias-hcl\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-112281\" title=\"Please Take Lotus Notes\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_old_logo-2.jpg?resize=64%2C59&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Please Take Lotus Notes\" width=\"64\" height=\"59\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_old_logo-2.jpg?resize=75%2C70&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_old_logo-2.jpg?resize=150%2C140&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBM_old_logo-2.jpg?w=231&amp;ssl=1 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 64px) 100vw, 64px\" \/><\/a>In a move to free up some cash and make room for its <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221206000039\/https:\/\/www.channele2e.com\/investors\/mergers-acquisitions\/ibm-acquiring-red-hat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$34 billion acquisition<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redhat.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Hat Inc.<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyse.com\/quote\/XNYS:RHT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RHT<\/a>),\u00a0<strong><a title=\"IBM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a><\/strong> (<a title=\"NYSE : IBM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NYSE-IBM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a>)<strong> is selling<\/strong> off its enterprise <strong>software business for $1.8 billion<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcltech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HCL Technologies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-119175\" title=\"Please Take Notes\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/begging-1.jpg?resize=85%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Please Take Notes\" width=\"85\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/begging-1.jpg?resize=142%2C150&amp;ssl=1 142w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/begging-1.jpg?resize=71%2C75&amp;ssl=1 71w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/begging-1.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 85px) 100vw, 85px\" \/>HCL Technologies<\/strong> is global services company valued at $8 billion. <strong>India-based<\/strong> HCL operates out of 43 countries, serving the financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications, media, publishing, entertainment, retail, and other industries.<\/p>\n<h3>Lotus Notes<\/h3>\n<p>The sale includes most of <strong>IBM\u2019s enterprise business<\/strong>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210617063219\/https:\/\/searchdomino.techtarget.com\/definition\/Notes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lotus Notes<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/searchdomino.techtarget.com\/definition\/Domino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Domino<\/strong><\/a> collaboration software, network management software <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201031050034\/https:\/\/whatis.techtarget.com\/definition\/Tivoli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tivoli<\/a>, and other titles. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190614193545\/https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/us-en\/marketplace\/enterprise-email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lotus Notes<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170228160130\/http:\/\/www.kapor.com:80\/blog-post-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">developed<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Kapor<\/a> in 1989 and was a pioneering enterprise software tool that swept the market with features such as <strong>email and collaboration workspaces<\/strong>, that we now take for granted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.computinghistory.org.uk\/det\/12569\/Lotus-1-2-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"1-2-3 dos lotus for noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Lotus 1-2-3 for DOSLotus 1-2-3- for DOS\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.computinghistory.org.uk\/userdata\/images\/large\/87\/69\/product-88769.jpg?resize=63%2C80\" alt=\"Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS\" width=\"63\" height=\"80\" \/><\/a>Lotus, founded in 1982, <\/span>rose to fame in 1983 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/48627\/lotus-1-2-3-three-decades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lotus 1-2-3<\/strong><\/a> spreadsheet, which drove the popularity of freshly minted <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240111001953\/https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/ibm\/history\/exhibits\/pc25\/pc25_intro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM PC<\/a>. IBM took over Lotus for the then astounding sum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/06\/12\/us\/ibm-wins-lotus-as-offer-is-raised-above-3.5-billion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$3.52 billion<\/a>. IBM looked to the Lotus acquisition to change its white-shirt-and-tie culture to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5cNJNKkCQ2E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">embrace the <strong>MTV age<\/strong><\/a> and the <strong>new Internet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Lotus Notes and Domino ranked among the top client-server groupware and email systems in the 1990s, competing head-on against <strong>Microsoft Exchange<\/strong>. While Microsoft successfully migrated Exchange to Office 365 in the cloud, Notes and Domino largely missed the cloud era.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webopedia.com\/TERM\/L\/Lotus_Notes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Lotus Notes\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/04\/IBM_Notes_9_logo.png\/900px-IBM_Notes_9_logo.png\" alt=\"Lotus Notes\" width=\"61\" height=\"61\" \/><\/a>Big Blue acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201031050034\/https:\/\/whatis.techtarget.com\/definition\/Tivoli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tivoli<\/strong><\/a> for $743 million in 1996. It ranked among the leading IT management software providers, competing against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ca.com\/us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CA Technologies<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BMC<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/searchitoperations.techtarget.com\/definition\/HP-OpenView\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HP<\/a> in the 1990s and early 2000s. Each of those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/enterprise-apps\/broadcom-surprises-industry-with-19-billion-bid-for-ca-technologies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">companies<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2013\/05\/06\/technology\/enterprise\/bmc-software\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stumbled<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2016\/05\/hp-splits-again-as-hewlett-packard-enterprise-spins-off-it-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent years<\/a> \u2014 opening the door for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicenow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ServiceNow<\/a> to disrupt major portions of the market.<\/p>\n<h3>The IBM world-view<\/h3>\n<p>The HCL deal highlights IBM\u2019s<strong> failure to navigate the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.differencebetween.net\/technology\/difference-between-cloud-based-and-server-based\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shift from client-server to SaaS<\/a><\/strong>. Lotus Notes stayed a client-server system and lost business to Amazon Web Services <strong>(AWS<\/strong>) and Microsoft <strong>Azure<\/strong> and <strong>Google<\/strong> Cloud Platform.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180823102332\/http:\/\/remuvebedbugs.com\/page\/4\/Don%5C%27t_Bury_Your_Head_In_The_Sand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-112287 \" title=\"IBM\u2019s failure to navigate the shift from client-server to SaaS\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/head_in_the_sand-5-e1578773709655-75x41.jpg?resize=108%2C59&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"59\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/head_in_the_sand-5-e1578773709655.jpg?resize=75%2C41&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/head_in_the_sand-5-e1578773709655.jpg?resize=150%2C83&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/head_in_the_sand-5-e1578773709655.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 108px) 100vw, 108px\" \/><\/a>Now that the business has been lost, IBM is moving in a different direction. Older software like Lotus Notes and Domino don\u2019t really play a role in the <strong>new IBM world-view<\/strong>. One IBM solution provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/channel-programs\/ibm-selling-big-part-of-its-software-portfolio-to-india-s-hcl-in-1-8-billion-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>CRN<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> &#8220;<em>I can understand getting rid of Lotus Notes and Domino Microsoft Office 365 and Google Apps are killing the hell out of Lotus Notes.<\/em> &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Lotus Notes, Domino, and Tivoli, the IBM Software asset sale to HCL includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IBM <strong>Appscan<\/strong>, a security-focused application for identifying and managing vulnerabilities in mission-critical applications;<\/li>\n<li>IBM <strong>BigFix<\/strong> endpoint management and security software;<\/li>\n<li>IBM <strong>Unica<\/strong>, a cloud-based enterprise marketing automation software; and<\/li>\n<li>IBM <strong>WebSphere<\/strong> Commerce, an omnichannel commerce platform for B2C and B2B organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>While I am the PM on our move off of Notes to SaaS products like O365, every once in a while I find myself saying that Notes worked well. But then I remember that it is overly complex and proprietary.
