The base is overrun by demons from Hell after its top-secret teleportation experiments go awry. A detachment of space marines are sent to investigate and all but one are slaughtered. It\u2019s up to the player to fight through the horde of demons on Phobos and, eventually Hell itself, to prevent a massive invasion of Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irobot.com\/roomba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-92282 \" title=\"Roomba self-driving vacuum\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roomba.jpg?resize=106%2C94&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Roomba self-driving vacuum\" width=\"106\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roomba.jpg?resize=150%2C133&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roomba.jpg?resize=75%2C67&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Roomba.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/><\/a>Like the last space marine, <em>Doom<\/em> is a survivor. As <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121129182519\/http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Motherboard<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/qkjv9x\/a-catalogue-of-all-the-devices-that-can-somehow-run-doom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained<\/a>, <i>Doom<\/i> is compatible with many devices because <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Id_Software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>id Software<\/strong><\/a> wanted it to be. id Software released <i>Doom<\/i>&#8216;s source code to the public in 1997 for reuse. <em>Doom<\/em> has been modified to run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.extremetech.com\/gaming\/273845-playing-doom-ascii-1337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in ASCII<\/a> and on a number of platforms including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/12-things-that-prove-that-doom-will-run-on-literally-anything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ATMs<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/itrunsdoom.tumblr.com\/post\/97561147343\/canon-pixma-inkjet-printers-yeah-they-run-doom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">printers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>latest hack<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2018\/06\/the-original-doom-cartridges-one-of-64-objects-that-shaped-video-game-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Doom<\/em><\/a> comes from developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.richwhitehouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rich Whitehouse<\/a>. He exploited the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/store.irobot.com\/default\/roomba-vacuuming-robot-vacuum-irobot-roomba-980\/R980020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Roomba<\/strong><\/a> self-driving vacuum robots create maps of your house as they sweep up. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irobot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iRobot<\/a> CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190624234330\/https:\/\/www.irobot.com\/about-irobot\/company-information\/management-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colin Angle<\/a> swears he will <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/roomba-ceo-swears-that-he-will-never-sell-maps-of-users-1797339735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">totally never sell<\/a> maps of your home to advertisers. Despite the CEO&#8217;s assurances, Mr. Whitehouse demonstrates that these maps can be exported. He uses the Roomba maps to create <strong>Doomba<\/strong> a tool that converts Roomba maps for use in <em>Doom<\/em>. Mr. Whitehouse told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/cool-tech\/doomba-roomba-doom-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Trends<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em> There\u2019s a lot going on under the hood, though. The Roomba is broadcasting a position and angle across the network in roughly one second intervals, as well as a bunch of other data. I write the relevant data out to a .noeroomba file as it comes in.
