Most of the major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/reviews\/market\/secure-email-gateways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endpoint security companies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barracuda.com\/products\/essentials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barracuda<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/products\/security\/email-security\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cisco<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-CSCO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CSCO<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortinet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fortinet<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-FTNT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FTNT<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mimecast.com\/content\/mail-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mimecast<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210127130927\/https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MIME\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIME<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proofpoint.com\/us\/products\/email-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proofpoint<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/news\/3735755-proofpoint-shares-stop-trading-after-acquisition-closes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PFPT<\/a>), have moved into email security \u2014 emphasizing training services to mitigate rising phishing threats. Plus, <a title=\"Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft<\/a> (<a title=\"NASDAQ | MSFT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/NASDAQ-MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSFT<\/a>) has pushed into email security services that wrap around its core business productivity software <strong>Office 365<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190331172206\/http:\/\/www.kerio.com:80\/blog\/should-small-business-invest-hardware-appliance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"email noopener security noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"email security\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerio.com\/sites\/default\/files\/field\/image\/network-security.jpg?resize=149%2C59\" alt=\"email security\" width=\"149\" height=\"59\" \/><\/a>The global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/29704\/email-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">email security market<\/a> is expected to reach <strong>$18 billion<\/strong> by 2023, expanding at 22% from 2016, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketresearchfuture.com\/reports\/email-security-market-3120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report asserts<\/a>. This growth has drawn the attention of <strong>venture capitalists<\/strong>. The latest VC deal is unique in that the smaller company is buying the larger firm.<\/p>\n<p>Publicly traded <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zixcorp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zix<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211215183205\/https:\/\/searchcontentmanagement.techtarget.com\/news\/252509509\/OpenText-to-add-email-encryption-developer-tools-O365-hooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZIXI<\/a>) i<strong>s acquiring <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appriver.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>AppRiver<\/strong><\/a> for <strong>$275 million in cash<\/strong>. Zix is a Dallas-based maker of email archiving and security products including <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191026100718\/https:\/\/www.zixcorp.com\/products\/zixmail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZixMail<\/a> which manages the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211101213229\/https:\/\/searchdatabackup.techtarget.com\/definition\/encryption-key-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">key management<\/a> to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/30545\/end-to-end-email-encryption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">end-to-end email encryption<\/a> that protects messages and attachments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hackercombat.com\/the-marriage-of-two-security-companies-zix-acquires-appriver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"appriver zix acquiring is noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Zix is acquiring AppRiver \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/hackercombat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/The-Marriage-Of-Two-Security-Companies-Zix-Acquires-AppRiver.jpg?resize=120%2C80&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Zix is acquiring AppRiver \" width=\"120\" height=\"80\" \/><\/a>AppRiver is a privately held Florida-based MSP-friendly cybersecurity and Microsoft Office 365 cloud solutions provider specialist. <strong>AppRiver<\/strong>, founded in 2002, supports more than <strong>60,000 companies<\/strong> globally in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Zix and AppRiver each have about 260 employees. As part of the M&amp;A plan, Zix expects to generate about <strong>$8 million in cost synergies<\/strong> \u2014 which typically means that layoffs are coming. AppRiver CEO Michael Murdoch is exiting the combined firm. Zix CEO David Wagner would not rule out further job cuts.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-116114\" title=\"cost synergies\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery.jpg?resize=85%2C64&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cost synergies\" width=\"85\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery.jpg?resize=150%2C114&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery.jpg?resize=75%2C57&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/syngery.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 85px) 100vw, 85px\" \/>CEO Wagner has lined up financial backers to help finance the AppRiver deal. Among the financial players are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230610184624\/http:\/\/www.truewindcapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">True Wind Capital<\/a><\/strong> will make a $100 million equity investment with the closing of the AppRiver acquisition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suntrust.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>SunTrust Bank<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.key.com\/businesses-institutions\/our-transactions\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>KeyBanc Capital Markets<\/strong> <\/a>committed to a new five-year\u00a0$175 million\u00a0term loan and a\u00a0$25 million\u00a0revolving credit line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myriadsupply.com\/product\/brocade-channel-funded-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"zix channel grow its noopener will noreferrer\"><\/a>The combined company, known as Zix, expects to generate roughly $200 &#8211; $207 million in annual recurring revenue in fiscal 2019, up 11% &#8211; 15% year over year. The deal is expected to close by March 31, 2019. Bu purchasing AppRiver, the new Zix will grow its channel from about 400 to 4,000 partners and its customer base will go from 20,000 to 60,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">AppRiver is no stranger to acquisitions as it worked to position itself as a one-stop-shop for commercial cybersecurity services.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2017, VC firm <strong>Marlin Equity Partners<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnj.com\/story\/money\/business\/2017\/10\/06\/marlin-equity-partners-acquires-majority-interest-gulf-breeze-based-appriver\/740012001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">purchased<\/a> a <strong>majority stake in AppRiver<\/strong> with intention of expanding its global footprint.<\/p>\n<p>I<a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelfutures.com\/from-the-industry\/technical-sales-and-services-teams-together-is-better\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"acquisitions no noopener stranger to noreferrer\"><\/a>n March 2018, AppRiver acquired Canadian company <strong>Roaring Penguin<\/strong> for its anti-spam and machine learning technologies. In October of 2018, AppRiver acquired <strong>Total Defense<\/strong>, a provider of subscription-based endpoint security for consumers and small businesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The last three places I have worked were AppRiver or Zix shops. It makes sense email is the gateway to the cloud for many firms. Email is mission-critical and complicated to secure so it gets moved to the cloud.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My experience with both firms was OK. We were an earlier adopter of hosted Exchange from AppRiver and then at a re-seller.
