It has a USB-C port and up to 26 hours of battery life. That is more playing time than most smartphones can provide. It comes with a bunch of audiophile features including; S-Master HX digital amplifier, a DSEE HX processor, even a vinyl processor to give digital tracks the character of vinyl.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a <strong>standard version<\/strong>, the Walkman NW-A105 for us mere mortals who can&#8217;t or won&#8217;t pay the commemorative. The blue and silver Sony <strong>Walkman TPS-L2<\/strong> was introduced in Japan on July 1, 1979. The original Walkman sold for around \u00a533,000 ($150). For the first time, the Walkman let us <strong>take our music with us<\/strong> without bothering our neighbors. It was the first affordable and manageable portable music player. German inventor Andreas Pavel&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210723182816\/https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/12\/17\/world\/americas\/an-unlikely-trendsetter-made-earphones-a-way-of-life.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stereobelt<\/a> was too clunky and expensive, so they never took off. <strong>Sony sold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019\/07\/03\/sony-walkman-40th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 50,000<\/a> in the first two months<\/strong>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>CNN<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/01\/tech\/innovation\/walkman-40th-anniversary-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that in its heyday, the Walkman was as synonymous with portable music players as Kleenex became to tissue and Xerox was to copy machines.<\/p>\n<h3>The Walkman came\u00a0to the US in 1980<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YH2T94XWqck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walkman<\/a> was <strong>introduced to the U.S. in 1980<\/strong> and continued to sell well even through the CD era. Innovation kept Sony on top of the market. By the time the Walkman made its U.S. debut in 1980, the cassette was well on its way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.core77.com\/posts\/89229\/Sony-Celebrates-the-Walkmans-40th-Anniversary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">overtaking vinyl<\/a>. By 1983, cassettes were officially the best-selling format. <span class=\"c-byline__item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/authors\/chaim-gartenberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chaim Gartenberg<\/a><\/span> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>the Verge<\/em><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/circuitbreaker\/2019\/7\/1\/20677636\/sony-walkman-anniversary-tps-l2-cassette-music-player-portable-mp3-evolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes<\/a> the Walkman was originally ridiculed for lacking the ability to record tapes. It was <strong>designed to play music<\/strong>. You could make a mixtape for your high-school sweetheart and listen to it together. The Walkman offered two 3.5mm headphone jacks (the same hardware that, until recently, found on the iPhone) in lieu of a speaker.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7lipckhgG5g\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Apple iPod<\/h3>\n<p><em>The Verge<\/em> notes that the Walkman&#8217;s popularity <strong>bega<\/strong><strong>n to fade<\/strong> with the <strong>arrival of CDs<\/strong>. Its popularity was further eroded in <strong>2001<\/strong> after the introduction of the <a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/2007\/article\/0,28804,1638782_1638778_1638771,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Apple iPod<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>digital downloads<\/strong> began to dominate. Tech historian <a href=\"http:\/\/stewartwolpin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stewart Wolpin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/talkingtech\/2019\/07\/01\/sony-walkman-turns-40-look-back-at-iconic-brand\/1593325001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>USA Today<\/em><\/a> that Sony could have dethroned Apple iPod and iTunes. He explained that Sony\u2019s boss <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/sony-ceo-on-the-wii-iphone-and-how-sony-almost-beat-t-245312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir Howard Stringer<\/a> had completely siloed the company\u2019s divisions so that the electronics business was kept separate from Sony&#8217;s recording and film divisions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>This kept Sony from building an iTunes\/iPod-like in<\/em><em>tegrated music player\/music store solution &#8230; Sony would have been the only potential competitor to Apple had the <\/em><em>Sony hardware and Sony content people been able to talk to each other.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The 40th anniversary of the Walkman is not about nostalgia. The Walkman is important because before there was th<\/em><em>e Internet to change what people expected from life, there was the Walkman.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Music that was too daring for commercial radio or my parents in the early \u201880s made its way to me via cassettes made by other kids. Without the Walkman, I probably would never have learned of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theb52s.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B-52&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ofkzvM7Skxg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rock Lobster<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blacksabbath.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Sabbath&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LQUXuQ6Zd9w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">War Pigs<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/aaep1600.osu.edu\/book\/17_IggyPop.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iggy Pop and the Stooges<\/a>&#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3mZ0sSStW6Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raw Power<\/a>.
