And <strong>many places to get your coffee<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/coffee-channel.com\/percolator-vs-drip-coffee-maker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">home<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starbucks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Starbucks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dunkindonuts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dunkin Donuts<\/a>, or the best &#8211; <a href=\"\/\/www.timhortons.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tim Horton&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> to get your morning pick-me \u201c<strong>cup of joe<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timhortons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100466\" title=\"Tim's large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Coffee_TimsCup.png?resize=75%2C123&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Tim's large\" width=\"75\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a>Why do we call our morning pick-me a \u201ccup of Joe?\u201d\u00a0 There are a <strong>number of theories<\/strong> why it&#8217;s &#8220;Joe.&#8221; The first theory dates back to <strong>1898<\/strong>\u00a0when <a href=\"https:\/\/driftaway.coffee\/why-is-coffee-called-a-cup-of-joe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/driftaway.coffee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Driftaway Coffee<\/a>&#8216;s blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mother-parkers.com\/a-better-beverage-journey\/our-brands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Martinson Coffee<\/strong><\/a> <strong>trademarked<\/strong> the term \u201c<strong>cup of joe<\/strong>.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiart.org\/en\/andy-warhol\/martinson-coffee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martinson Coffee<\/a> was founded in <strong>New York<\/strong> in 1898 by Joe Martinson. The author speculates that the coffee may have locally been called \u201cJoe\u2019s coffee\u201d or a \u201ccup of joe.\u201d As the company grew, \u201ccup of joe\u201d could have expanded from a local nickname to a more widely used term by the 1930s<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/author\/brookenelson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooke Nelson<\/a> at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Readers Digest<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/food\/fun\/reason-coffee-called-cup-of-joe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> the <strong>most popular origin story<\/strong> goes back to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josephus_Daniels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josephus Daniels<\/strong><\/a> during <a title=\"World War I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>World War I<\/strong><\/a>. Mr. Daniels was appointed <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Secretary of the Navy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secretary_of_the_Navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Secretary of the <strong>U.S. Navy<\/strong><\/a> during World War I by President <a title=\"Woodrow Wilson\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about-the-white-house\/presidents\/woodrow-wilson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Woodrow Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ussjosephusdaniels.com\/ship_photos.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100467\" title=\"USS Josephus Daniels DLG\/CG-27\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/DLG-27B-e1565829044140-150x78.jpg?resize=148%2C77&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"USS Josephus Daniels DLG\/CG-27\" width=\"148\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/DLG-27B-e1565829044140.jpg?resize=150%2C78&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/DLG-27B-e1565829044140.jpg?resize=75%2C39&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/DLG-27B-e1565829044140.jpg?w=754&amp;ssl=1 754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/a>Mr. Daniels, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/teetotaler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teetotaler<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josephus_Daniels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vehement white supremacist<\/a>\u00a0imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/content\/history\/nhhc\/research\/library\/online-reading-room\/title-list-alphabetically\/g\/general-orders\/general-order-no-99-prohibition-in-the-navy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Order 99<\/a> that <strong>prohibited alcohol aboard U.S. Navy ships<\/strong> on June 01, 1914. According to this theory, the loss of easy access to booze aboard U.S. Navy ships led to <strong>increased coffee consumption<\/strong> by sailors. The sailors sarcastically called it their new beverage \u201c<strong>a cup of Josephus<\/strong>\u201d in honor of the man who had banned their booze. The snarky name stuck and eventually turned into \u201ca cup of Joe\u201d for short.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Nelson concludes that this origin story for \u201ccup of Joe\u201d is amusing, but <strong>probably not true<\/strong>. She points out that the term \u201ccup of Joe\u201d only appears in writing for the first time in 1930\u2014long after the Navy\u2019s alcohol ban. Barbara Mikkelso at\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Snopes.com<\/a><\/em> also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/cup-of-joe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">points out<\/a> that <strong>U.S Navy ships had been officially dry<\/strong> for enlisted men since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navycs.com\/public-law\/naval-ration-1861.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spirit ration was abolished<\/a> in <strong>1862<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elvisdaily.com\/2017\/09\/30\/when-elvis-presley-drinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100475\" title=\"Not so average Joe drinking coffee\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elvis-Loves-Coffee.jpg?resize=96%2C129&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Not so average Joe drinking coffee\" width=\"96\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elvis-Loves-Coffee.jpg?resize=112%2C150&amp;ssl=1 112w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elvis-Loves-Coffee.jpg?resize=56%2C75&amp;ssl=1 56w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elvis-Loves-Coffee.jpg?w=325&amp;ssl=1 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" \/><\/a>Another theory is that \u201c<strong>Joe<\/strong>\u201d refers to the <strong>average man<\/strong> and is often used as slang for \u201cfellow, guy, or chap.\u201d <em>Snopes<\/em> reports this usage<strong> dates to 1846<\/strong> and is still present today. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rXwMrBb2x1Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe<\/a>\u201d is used to describe a typical guy who is interchangeable with any other guy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cG.I. Joe,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cJoe Blow,\u201d or<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAverage Joe.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So \u201ccup of joe\u201d could be another way of saying \u201c<strong>the common man\u2019s drink<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another origin story holds that \u201cjoe\u201d is a <strong>mash-up<\/strong> of two other slang words for coffee <strong>\u201cjava\u201d and \u201cmocha.\u201d<\/strong> The mash-up led to \u201cjamoke,\u201d which combines the words \u201cjava\u201d and \u201cmocha.\u201d\u00a0 Eventually \u201ccup of jamoke\u201d was shortened down to a \u201ccup of Joe.\u201d People do love to shorten their slang terms, after all.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210306044927\/https:\/\/snappypixels.com\/marilyn-monroe\/photos-of-marilyn-monroe-being-totally-cool\/attachment\/photo-marilyn-monroe-being-cool-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-100468\" title=\"Not so average Marilyn drinking coffee\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860-150x108.jpg?resize=136%2C98&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Not so average Marilyn drinking coffee\" width=\"136\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860.jpg?resize=150%2C108&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860.jpg?resize=75%2C54&amp;ssl=1 75w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860.jpg?resize=768%2C552&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860.jpg?resize=1024%2C736&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860.jpg?w=1147&amp;ssl=1 1147w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rbach.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/MM_drinking_coffee-e1565830126860.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/><\/a>Snopes<\/em> says <strong>jamoke<\/strong> is the best theory for morphing into joe. The British <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230401104224\/https:\/\/www.careerigniter.com\/questions\/what-does-an-etymologist-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">etymologist<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwidewords.org\/qa\/qa-joe1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Quinion<\/a> found an early <strong>documented example<\/strong> from 1931 in the <em>Reserve Officer\u2019s Manual<\/em> by a man named Erdman:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u2018Jamoke, Java, Joe. Coffee. Derived from the words Java and Mocha, where originally the best coffee came from.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>rb-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>So, where did this nickname really come from? No one knows for sure.
