Labor Day 2018

Southeast Michigan is, in many ways, the birthplace of the American Middle Class. Labor Day is here again the celebrate the working man’s contribution to America. But in 2018 the working class is under siege. One way to celebrate labors’ contribution is to look at the artifacts of the last time the economy was so out of whack.

Detroit Industry

One magnificent artifact is “Detroit Industry” at the Detroit Institute of Arts. “Detroit Industry” is a four-wall mural created by Diego Rivera in 1932-1933. The murals depict the history of Detroit and the development of industry.

The DIA commissioned Detroit Industry, with backing from DIA patron Edsel Ford. The only request was that the murals address the history of Detroit and the development of industry.

Rivera and his spouse Frida Kahlo arrived in Detroit in 1932 during the depths of the “Great Depression.”  He completed the fresco in 1933. The images show Rivera’s take on big-time American capitalism. They simultaneously glorify the culture of the modern factory as well as slyly savaging the men in charge.

This panel, from the north wall. “Production and Manufacture of Engine and Transmission,” is based on Rivera’s observations of the 1932 Ford V-8 being produced at Ford Motor Company‘s (F) River Rouge factory. Rivera’s work represented a multiracial workforce was an important aspect of his idealism.

Detroit One of Worst Connected US Cities

Detroit One of Worst Connected US CitiesThe outgoing Michigan goobernerd has finally noticed a broadband access problem in Michigan. The Detroit News is reporting that Snyder announced a plan to make universal access to high-speed internet available throughout Michigan. (rb- Just like safe drinking water in Flint?) Snyder’s office says the Michigan Consortium of Advanced Networks (MCAN) sets the path for improving access and adoption of broadband.

Synder’s minions say that Michigan currently ranks 30th in the nation for broadband availability. More than 350,000 households – mostly in rural areas – lack access to high-speed internet service. Another two million households only have access to a single, terrestrial internet service provider.

Their meaningless election year recommendations include calling for greater investment in broadband to improve the community and economic development. They are also promoting and building awareness for low-cost broadband subscription programs.

Among the groups involved in this election year boondoggle is a who’s who of soft-money PAC contributing network neutrality haters:

As proof these groups have failed to make broadband available to the citizens of Detroit, CircleiD.com points us to the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) report. The NDIA found that Detroit is the second-worst connected city in the U.S. NDIA ranked all 185 U.S. cities with 50,000 households by the total percentage of each city’s households lacking fixed broadband internet subscriptions.

Slow internetThe study used data from the 2016 American Community Survey (ACS), released by the U.S. Census Bureau. NDIA notes, “The term ‘Fixed broadband Internet’ as used by the Census includes wireline broadband technologies (cable Internet, DSL, fiber to the premises) as well as satellite and ‘fixed wireless’ technologies … It does not include 3G and 4G mobile services such as one purchases for a smartphone, or non-broadband connections like dial-up modems.”

NDIA says this data is not an indication of the availability of home broadband service, but rather of the extent to which households are actually connected to it. NDIA focused on fixed broadband subscriptions in this comparison of household connection rates, because the strict data caps common to mobile Internet services make mobile much less useful for general household Internet access.

Internet slow laneOther Michigan communities in the study included Warren which ranked 86th nationally with 56.7% of households disconnected and Grand Rapids which came in at 107 nationally with 29.4% of its households off the net.

Slow internetI get so irritated by these political games. Followers of the Bach Seat know that I have been involved with projects that have provided real high-speed Internet access to some of the poorest communities in Michigan. That is despite the efforts of many of these same players.

Am I the only grumpy guy that remembers of other doomed efforts? Link Michigan? Wireless Genesee? Wireless Oakland?

What No One Tells You About Detroit Jobs

What No One Tells You About Detroit JobsA new survey released in June 2018 by Robert Half Technology shows 76 percent of Detroit tech hiring managers said they are expanding their teams.

Some 83 percent of polled tech hiring managers said they are seeing more tech workers moving to Detroit to take open tech jobs.

The survey shows the top skills in demand in Detroit include:

Nationally, 60 percent of IT hiring decision-makers plan to expand the size of their teams between now and the end of the year.

Top cities where companies plan to staff up their tech teams:

  1. Miami
  2. Detroit
  3. Los Angeles
  4. Phoenix
  5. Charlotte

When asked to describe their top concerns, respondents cited keeping IT systems and company information safe ranked first, followed by investing in new technologies, upgrading business systems for efficiency, and innovation.

Tech leaders in 21 of the 26 major metropolitan areas included in the study listed security as their biggest priority, after recruitment.

Robert Half logoJeff Weber, executive director of Robert Half Technology said in the presser, “Business needs surrounding security, cloud and digital transformation are outpacing the supply of talent, and technology leaders are facing difficulties staffing open roles.”

To address the tech shortage, Mr. Weber suggests employers stop hunting for purple squirrels, “Employers should be discerning about what skills are must-haves versus what can be trained for on the job and move quickly with offers when they meet strong candidates.”

Riskiest ZIP Codes

Riskiest ZIP CodesCredit rating firm Experian recently published a list of the top 100 riskiest shipping ZIP codes for 2017. In the list, U.S. ZIP codes were rated on the number of attempted fraudulent e-commerce transactions against the population of overall e-commerce orders for the ZIP codes.

Experian’s analysis of fraudulent transactions says international IP addresses affect the overall riskiness of a transaction. e-Commerce transactions from international IP addresses are much riskier than average—6.7x riskier from a shipping perspective. Additionally, Experian’s analysis shows that traffic coming from a proxy server—which could originate from domestic and international IP addresses — is 74 times riskier
then the average transaction.

The riskiest ZIP code for e-commerce fraud in 2017 was 97079 in Beaverton, Oregon according to Experian. In fact, Oregon had nearly half of the top 25 riskiest ZIP codes in 2017. The areas in and around Portland OR occupied 10 of the top 25 spots for riskiest e-commerce transactions. Beaverton’s highest risk international IP county is China.

The Miami Florida area put the sunshine state at #2 in the top 25 with nearly a quarter of the riskiest ZIP codes. Miami had 6 of the top 25 slots for the next most risky ZIP Codes for e-commerce firms. The riskiest Miami ZIP code is 33122. Miami’s highest risk international IP county is Venezuela.

South El Monte, California ZIP code 91733 is the third riskiest ZIP code on the Experian list for e-commerce firms to ship to. Experian says that 91733’s highest risk international IP countries are Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The riskiest Michigan ZIP code is 48204 in Detroit, which ranked 32nd on the list and is only 15% of the risk of Beaverton OR.

The increase in e-commerce fraud attacks should not surprise anyone. The growth of online information and the continuing tsunami of data breaches has put over 9.7 billion data records on the dark web. The plethora of stolen PII enables criminals to open fraudulent accounts, take over legitimate accounts and submit fraudulent transactions.

Another reason for the increase in online fraud activity is automation. In the past, criminals needed to do something, but they can now attack by simply downloading a file and automating the submission of thousands of applications or transactions
simultaneously.

DUO Expands Into Detroit

-Updated 08/02/2018 – Lumbering behemoth Cisco (CSCO) is buying Duo for $2.35B in cash. Hopefully, it will go better for Duo, Ann Arbor and Detroit than Cisco’s other purchase Flip and Linksys.

DUO Expands Into DetroitThe Ann Arbor Michigan-based cybersecurity tech company DUO Security continues to grow. The start-up has grown so much that they are moving part of their operation from Ann Arbor to Detroit Michigan. MLive reports that DUO will move 30 staff members into a shared workspace at Bamboo Detroit in the Madison Building at 1420 Washington Blvd. Employees moving to Detroit include those working in Duo’s engineering, information services, and product teams, the statement said.

DUO SecurityAt least 350 of Duo’s 500 employees work at Michigan locations, including two in Ann Arbor, where the company was founded in 2010. Duo Security CEO and co-founder Dug Song told MLive, “We are exploring options for how we continue to grow, but we’re committed to Michigan … We intend to stay here in Ann Arbor.”

To better support, its customer base Duo Security plans to expand its Detroit footprint by the end of 2018. The cybersecurity firm plans to occupy a 9,000-square-foot suite on the Madison Building’s sixth floor. DUO’s customer base includes over 10,000 companies like Facebook (PDF), Etsy, Toyota, the University of Michigan, Yelp, and Zillow.

Duo’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) secures more than 300 million logins a month. Xconomy Detroit explains that the heart of Duo’s business-to-business technology is two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is a method of confirming the identity of a user by sending a code to the user’s device, usually their phone. Duo’s software can also check the health of its customers’ devices, and block access to those deemed risky.

Jon Oberheide, Duo’s co-founder and CTO, told Xconomy, the Duo platform ensures that only trusted users and devices can access protected applications. Implementation of the system takes less than a week for 75% of Duo’s customers. Mr. Oberheide explains why DUO is so successful,

You have some people using their own devices, some using company devices, and people working in different locations. A security program in that environment looks really different—it becomes really important to protect single log-ins.

I like what DUO is doing in Michigan. We use their product and it works great! We have been using DUO for over 2 years now. I get very little push back from 3rd party vendors when I require them to use DUO to log in remotely.
