Holy Sell Out Batman

Batman is being used to pump 5GThe Caped Crusader has sold out. While the full benefits of next-generation wireless – 5G won’t be realized until at least mid-2020, Batman is being used to pimp 5G.  AT&T used The guardian of Gotham to create demand for mixed-reality at last month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain. The mixed-reality experience featured DC Comics Batman and the Scarecrow battling it out on the MWC show floor.

Fierce Videoaugmented reality headset reports that AT&T (T), Ericsson (ERIC), Intel (INTC), and Warner Bros., with DC, are using 5G technology and edge computing to build a location-based mixed-reality experience. For the walk-in experience at MWC, visitors put on an augmented reality headset. There they witnessed a 2 to 3-minute experience.

Ade Kushimo, director of business development, IoT, and emerging business at Ericsson told Fierce Video, “The really cool part of the experience is going to be the fact that you have this virtual, digital content being embedded into your physical space. That gives you that mixed reality experience.

Sensorama (patented 1962) which was an arcade-style theatre cabinet that would stimulate all the senses, not just sight and sound.

Mixed reality experience with Batman

Doug Matheson, vice president of strategic business development at Ericsson, said the proof-of-concept experience demonstrated that 5G technology (both radio and core) could be combined with intellectual property to create a mixed reality experience that’s both mobile and untethered.

In order to create a good mixed-reality experience, image lag has to be kept to a minimum. Image lag will make you dizzy and ruin the experience. That means that compute power has to be pushed out to the edge of the network to reside closer to the end-user. The compute power needed to process a mixed reality experience can’t live in a centralized data center somewhere.

Cloud computingThe cloud and edge network architecture allows for heavy computing to be done away from the device. So, the goal is to shift processing to the cloud and transport it there using a 5G network. The Batman demo ran on a fully integrated 5G network using Ericsson radio base stations 5G network technology will help supply the lower latency and higher speeds and enabled by Intel Xeon processors and the Intel 5G mobile trial platform.

Mobile Marketer says that 5G will have a huge impact on AT&T’s mobile network. Its data traffic has grown more than 470,000% since 2007, with video making up half of the mobile data. Video may expand its share of data traffic to more than 75% by 2022, according to the company’s estimates.

Batman now works for AT&T following its acquisition of Time Warner who owned Warner Brothers, which owned DC Comics, the home of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Lex Luthor, Oswald Cobblepot, and the Flash.

More Wi-Fi Patent Legal Wrangling

Ericsson, (ERIC) the Swedish telecommunications giant has filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against a number of companies for alleged patent infringement of its IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi products reports CENS.com. CENS.com says the businesses named in Ericsson’s lawsuit include:

Foxconn logoTech Connect reports that Ericsson claims, the companies named are offering products that violate one or more of the following WLAN patents (number/title):

  • 6,466,568 – ‘Multi-rate radiocommunication systems and terminals’
  • 5,771,468 – ‘Multi-purpose base station’
  • 6,519,223 – ‘System and method for implementing a semi-reliable retransmission protocol’
  • 6,330,435 – ‘Data packet discard notification’
  • 6,772,215 – ‘Method for minimizing feedback responses in ARQ protocols
  • 6,424,625 – ‘Method and apparatus for discarding packets in a data network having automatic repeat request’
  • 6,173,352 – ‘Mobile computer mounted apparatus for controlling enablement and indicating the operational status of a wireless communication’
  • 5,987,019 – ‘Multi-rate radiocommunication systems and terminals’
  • 5,790,516 – ‘Pulse shaping for data transmission in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed system’

D-Link logoEricsson requested the infringing companies to compensate its losses and asked the court to ban the sales of the infringing products. D-Link told CENS.com they cannot give any comment because the company had not received any file from the court. But it will not affect the sales of its products. Acer told CENS.com that its legal department had received the related notice and has started judicial procedures.

I have covered other WLAN patent suits here and here. While I’m no patent lawyer, what this says to me is that the WLAN market is starting to level off and firms are looking for “other” ways to make some money without producing products. A business tactic fresh from the 1980s.

I also noticed that this suit between a European firm (Ericsson) and Asian firms (Acer, Netgear, and D-Link) was brought in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. This seems to be a favorite place for firms to sue each other, I wonder if anyone has ever investigated why this court is so popular for alleged patent troll cases.

One of the things that we instituted a while ago, in our RFP’s and contract’s is a clause that requires the VAR and the manufacturer to hold the end-user harmless in regards to patent suits the VAR or manufacturer may get entangled in.

Fiber Through Sewers Coming to US

Fiber Through Sewers Coming to USi3 America has announced the first U.S. pilot of its Fibrecity open access network in Quincy, IL Light Reading reports. The firm believes the time is right in the U.S. market, based on the Google (GOOG) inspired boom in municipal fiber projects said Brian Foley, VP of sales for i3 America. “We are excited to be working with Quincy on this pilot — the city has been extremely cooperative in moving things forward,” Foley told LightReading.

i3 America logoi3 partners with municipalities and municipally owned utilities to deploy the i3 Fibrecity system in sewer systems. “By working in partnership with the municipality, we will take their information about the existing pipes and put that into our GIS systems,” Alasdair Rettie, technical director of i3 Group Ltd. said in the LightReading article. “We will ask where they have problems, because we don’t want to put fiber in areas where there is already an issue. Before we deploy, we will clean the sewers and do a survey of the sewer lines to pick the routes we want to go, and where it’s needed, we will repair the sewers.

By using the waste-water pipes to deploy fiber, i3 claims to trim 30 percent to 50 percent off the cost of deploying fiber. Light Reading says the i3 patented technology secures the fiber optic cable to the bottom of a sewer and is actually designed to enable sediment that might normally settle there to move farther downstream.

i3 will build and operate the local loop fiber network for its partners in Illinois on an open access basis, Rettie stated in the article. The parties then either work out a revenue-sharing deal or enable the municipality to use the network for its own purposes, including providing fiber connections to schools, video security monitoring, traffic management, public safety, and/or subsidized connections into homes of low-income residents.

Fibrecity logoAccording to Light Reading, the Fibrecity network is an open-access system, based on FTTH optoelectronics from Ericsson AB (ERIC) and Enablence Technologies Inc. (ENA) which uses i3’s system of running fiber through sewers to a place  near the home, where the fiber is then micro-trenched to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) that has four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Fibrecity is designed to use a 1-12 split for its passive optical network, versus the 1-32 split commonly used in US fiber deployments, so each household is guaranteed 100 Mbit/s symmetrically, Rettie says, with the ability to burst, possibly with a boost-button paid service.

By taking an open-access approach, i3 can allow multiple service providers offering different services to address each household. “We encourage much more than triple play,” Rettie told Light Reading. “We have service providers today using IP connections to provide home security services; an applications service provider could use this to provide cloud computing; your employer could rent one of the ports to enable work-at-home. It’s all about thinking outside the box.” Open APIs are built into the i3 approach — it has tied into the APIs of Ericsson and Enablence and can offer service providers various service templates, featuring different upstream and downstream speeds, that they can then choose to offer.

Fibrecity seems like a no-brainer. Besides the flexibility and cost savings a private network presents, other benefits include:

  1. On-going maintenance – Over the last 8 months on our current network, we have had two 24 hour+ outages due to fires, one outage due to gunshots and one from an auger. None of these incidents would have happened if the clients fiber backbone was in the sewer instead of on poles.
  2. Allows owners to bypass the outrageous pole make-ready demands that utilities make to prevent private fiber networks from being built.  I have seen a private utility delay a public project in public right-of-way for over 2 years.
  3. Finally, i3 says it repairs sewers as needed, which is a money savings that any tax-payer will appreciate.
