The Mystery of Le Griffon: The First Great Lakes Shipwreck

The Mystery of Le Griffon: The First Great Lakes ShipwreckAs the chilly winds of Halloween stir, tales of the paranormal come to life. In the darkest corners of Michigan’s history, a ghost story has lingered since the 17th century. It weaves a chilling tale around the 17th century French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. La Salle was, a man obsessed with discovering the mythical Northwest passage to China and Japan through the treacherous Great Lakes.

Le Griffon halloweenFirst full-sized sailing ship

La Salle commissioned the first full-sized sailing ship on the Great Lake, the Le Griffon. The Le Griffon was built at Fort Conti near Cayuga Island on the Niagara River in 1679. Le Griffon had a crew of 32, was armed with seven cannons and had a capacity of 45 tons. It was about 30 to 40 feet long and 10 to 15 feet wide.

The Le Griffon embarked from Ft. Conti on August 7, 1679. The explorers passed the Straits of Detroit on August 11, 1679 and arrived at Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron 25 August 1679. They then sailed north to Mishi-Mikinaak (Ojibwe) at East Moran Bay off the settlement of Mission St. Ignace.  On Sept. 2, 1679, the Le Griffon left St. Ignace and arrived a few days later at Detroit Harbor on Washington Island, near Green Bay.

La Salle traded with the local Pottawatomie tribe for furs and other goods. On September 18, 1679, La Salle dispatched the Le Griffon back to Niagara with six crew members and a cargo of furs. La Salle and the rest of his men continued their expedition by canoe.

Mysteriously disappeared

But the Le Griffon never made it back. It mysteriously disappeared somewhere in Lake Michigan. Leaving no trace of its fate. Some say it was sunk by a storm, and others claim the Jesuits sunk it, other say it was cursed by a witch or a griffin, a mythical creature that was half eagle and half lion.

The mystery of the Le Griffon has haunted generations of explorers, historians and treasure hunters. Some believe that the ship still sails the Great Lakes as a ghost ship, appearing and disappearing at will. Others think that it lies at the bottom of the lake, guarding its secrets and its treasure.

Final resting place

Numerous wrecks have been touted as the Le Griffon. However, none has been conclusively proven. Some of the most notable claims include:

It is said that the Le Griffon is a ghost ship. The is crew apparently heard chanting as she sails among the clouds on moonlit evenings. It has since been seen tracking a collision course with other vessels in Michigan Harbor, only to vanish before contact. Its wreck has never been definitively located.

What Native Americans Discovered Your Place First

Native Americans Discovered Michigan FirstColumbus Day marks the day when America was “discovered.” This is wrong. Columbus day ignores thousands of years of native Americans living in the Americas in favor of a Euro-centric narrative. The website Native-Lands attempts to document which native American people lived in your place before Columbus “discovered” them.

Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit location in modern DetroitThe European history of Detroit says the first recorded contact between Europeans and the Great Lakes Indians occurred between 1534 and 1542, when Jacques Cartier of France explored the St. Lawrence River to discover gold or silver. In 1701 Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Detroit. But this ignores the history of the Mound Builders who lived in the area before the Native American tribes.

The Detroit area has populated by as many as seven different native peoples before Columbus arrived.

The Peoria people are the descendants of those who created the great mound civilizations in the central U.S. 2,000 thousand years ago. Their territory ranged from Jefferson City, MO to Madison, WI over to Detroit and Toledo.

The Anishinabewaki native Americans populated a territory that stretched from Regina, Saskatchewan to Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit and Minneapolis.

What Michigan City Has The Fastest Download Speeds

fastest download speedsThe politicians in Lansing are not known for doing anything good quickly. But they do have fast internet. New rankings from RootMetrics showed that Lansing, Michigan had one of the fastest download speeds in the U.S. during the second half of 2020. Lansing ranked 6th out of 125 markets in the RootMetrics report.

Fastest download speeds in Michigan

Lansing’s median download speed across the major carriers was 43.7 Mbps. Michigan’s capital city had faster aggregate median download speeds than tech-heavy markets. Lansing ranked better than Chicago (36 Mbps), San Fransico (34.6 Mbps), Dallas (32.3 Mbps), or Los Angeles (31.6 Mbps).

Michigan metro’s rated surprisingly well, overall.

  • Detroit ranked 16th nationally at 39.5 Mbps.
  • Ann Arbor came in 47th with 34.4  Mbps.
  • Flint‘s 31.8 Mbps earned it the 59th spot.

The article says that speeds of 30 Mbps are typically fast enough for users to enjoy smooth gaming and fast file downloads.

the worst download speeds

Slowest download speeds

The metropolitan areas with the worst download speeds are spread across the U.S.  The report says Antelope Valley, CA (20.0 Mbps), Madison, WI (19.3 Mbps), and  Fresno, CA (18.8 Mbps) were the worst.

RootMetrics told FierceWireless smaller markets like Lansing have some advantages over the mega-markets like Chicago or Los Angles.  Rishikesh Bhandari, RootMetrics RF engineer explained,

Technology rollouts and the optimization of those technologies (such as 5G or higher-order carrier aggregation, among others) can often take longer in bigger cities precisely because of size …  there are far more people for the carriers to serve—and over much larger geographic distances … the carriers must ensure smooth technology deployments … and that can take time, especially in bigger cities, with millions of people and thousands of square miles to cover.

How they test the fastest download speeds

RootMetrics conducts its tests with unmodified Android-based smartphones purchased off the shelf at regular mobile phone stores. To determine which metropolitan markets across the U.S. were home to the fastest and slowest speeds, the Bellevue, WA based firm aggregated the overall median download speeds recorded across all network technologies (4G LTE and 5G, where applicable) for AT&T (T), T-Mobile (TMUS), and Verizon (VZ)n in each of the 125 most populated metropolitan markets in the country and ranked them from fastest to slowest.

The End of the Seven-Digit Local Call

Seven-Digit Local Calls Coming to an EndThe seven-digit local call is doomed. Soon it will no longer be possible to call the next-door neighbor or corner store without an area code. U.S. voice providers – wireline – wireless and cable — have started notifying their customers of the change. Phone users need to start dialing 10-digits whenever they make a call – local or long distance. The FCC is forcing the 10 digit – 3 digit area code plus the 7 digit local number.

FCC commissioner Ajit PeiThe FCC is mandating (FCC Order 20-100) this change to make it possible for callers to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline by just dialing “988.” The federally financed National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The new law will allow states to collect fees from mobile service providers and use the funds to support 988, though it’s unclear how much more funding the fees will generate. 988 will allow a shift from a law enforcement and justice system response to one of immediately connecting to care for individuals in suicidal, mental health, and substance use crises. The number is the first step to make a fundamental shift in how communities engage people in crisis. When you’ve got a police, fire, or rescue emergency, you call 911. When you have an urgent mental health need, you’ll call 988.

National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis LifelineFierce Telecom explains that in July 2020 the FCC established the 988 hotline. The 988 hotline will make it faster for people to connect to crisis counselors and get help without having to remember a longer toll-free number. And now the agency is considering expanding this to require text messaging providers to support text messaging to 988. In its Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking issued in April 2021.

In its order, the FCC noted that text messaging is particularly popular with teenagers and young adults and also those that are deaf or have speech disabilities.

Given the pervasiveness of text messaging, particularly among at-risk groups, we believe it is essential to explore making it as easy as possible to reach the Lifeline by text through the use of the same short, easy-to-remember code by which Americans will be able to call the Lifeline.

Why we need 10-digit dialing

The reason 10-digit dialing is necessary to make the 988 hotline work is because the North American Numbering Plan Administrator has to make sure that calls to 988 get directed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If someone has a seven-digit number that starts with 988, the phone switch will not know whether this call needs to go to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline or to the seven-digit number. By requiring 10-digit dialing, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator is able to prevent any confusion to the system.

When will the local call change begin?

When will the local call change begin?Beginning April 24, you should begin dialing 10 digits (area code plus telephone number) for all local calls. Your call will still get completed if you forget and dial just seven digits.

Beginning Oct. 24, you must dial 10 digits (area code plus telephone number) for all local calls. Calls made with only seven digits may not be completed after Oct, 24. A recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.

Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.

rb-

Michigan residents impacted by this change are in the 616, 810, 906, 989 area codes. If you live in one of the impacted areas, be sure to include the area code, or they may stop working, including:

  • Medical alert devices,
  • Security systems,
  • Fax machines,
  • Speed dialers,
  • Contact lists,
  • Websites,
  • Stationery, and
  • Advertising.

Hopefully, this will reduce the number of people in a mental health crisis being killed by police not prepared to deal with mental health crises.
