Bill Gates: Broadway Star You Never Knew Existed

Bill Gates: Broadway Star You Never Knew ExistedWho would have thought that the mastermind behind Windows would ever trade coding for choreography? Ernie Smith at Tedium surfaced a video of Microsoft CEO Bill Gates on a Broadway stage. In the fall of 1992, Microsoft spent $2 million to turn Mr. Gates into a Broadway star. The show, “How to Succeed in Business with Workgroup Computing,” opened (and closed) at Broadway’s Gershwin Theater, one of the biggest theaters in New York.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11The show celebrated and promoted Windows for Workgroups. Microsoft released Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in November 1993. It introduced support for 32-bit file access, drive sharing, and group calendaring. It also had built-in fax capabilities.

What’s new in Windows for Workgroups 3.11

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was the first time Microsoft embraced connectivity on the PC. They added a Winsock package for dial-up connectivity. Winsock is an API that allows Windows network software to access network services, especially TCP/IP. Microsoft later replaced Winsock with a 32-bit stack add-on package that provided TCP/IP support in WFW 3.11. They also increased WFW connectivity with NetWare networks. Microsoft also introduced support for Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) cards and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) drivers. Additionally, they introduced a Remote access service, allowing users to access their computers remotely.

The commercial play highlights some of the greatest hits of the 1990s: yuppies, dance tunes, the Blues Brothers, 90s clothes, and Bill Gates trying aerobics.

Bill Gates acting debut

miracle of computer networkingAccording to the Washington Post review of the extravaganza. The show cast Gates as a hero computer consultant who saves two employees, Jake and Max, from an impossible deadline. Gates demonstrated the miracle of computer networking to the beleaguered Kitty Carnival Amusement company employees using Windows for Workgroups. One of the actors exclaimed, “We’re not worthy!” in typical “Wayne’s World” fashion. Gates even attempted a dance routine with some performers dressed as the Blues Brothers, resulting in a symphony of misplaced steps and flailing arms. Mr Gates said,

That was so bad, I thought [then Microsoft CEO] Ballmer was going to retch.”

You can watch the entire production on YouTube.

If you don’t want to watch all 62 minutes, here are some links to the best parts:

Bills Gate’s Broadway debut did not do much for Windows for Workgroups. Microsoft Lore says that the WFW product was called Windows for the warehouse in Redmond. WFW was superseded by Windows NT, which was released while WFW was still available.

Bill’s presence improved, and he is frequently seen on CNBC. Here are some more Gates videos from Wired.

Why Combating Climate Change Is Crucial

Why Combating Climate Change Is CrucialWho says climate change is not real? Recently, the temperature outside Detroit hit 95 degrees Fahrenheit, an unusual high that underscores the reality of climate change. Another sign of climate change comes from CNN. They are reporting that climate change is melting the Antarctic ice sheet in a new, worrying way. The melting ice sheets will cause a rise in sea levels threatening coastal communities around the world.

The new study suggests current projections may significantly underestimate the problem. Alex Bradley, an ice dynamics researcher at British Antarctic Survey (BAS) told CNN, “…our projections of sea level rise might be significant underestimates.” The current models used to project future sea level rise have not taken into account melting ice sheets. Hence the current projections could be significantly underestimating the problem.

Why Combating Climate Change Is Crucial

If all the ice on land has melted and drained into the sea.

What is happening to the ice sheets

Scientists from the BAS found that warm ocean water is seeping beneath the ice sheet at the “grounding line.” The grounding line is where ice meets the seabed. This seeping at the grounding line is causing accelerated melting and will lead to a tipping point. A tipping point is where small changes cause irreversible effects.

The melting works like this, relatively warm ocean water opens cavities in the ice. The cavities allows more water to seep in. This  causes more melting and larger cavities to form. The pattern repeats until the glacier has completely melted. A small increase in ocean temperatures can have a very big impact on the amount of melting, the study found. As climate change heats up the oceans, the process speeds up.

Tipping pointYou get this kind of runaway feedback,” Alex Bradley explained. He is an ice dynamics researcher at BAS and author of the paper. It behaves like a tipping point, he told CNN. “… where you can have a very sudden shift in how much melting is happening in these places.

This tipping point would play out through a faster flow of ice into the oceans. This process is not currently included in models of future sea level rise. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is particularly vulnerable to climate change. It is vulnerable because the land under it is below sea level and slopes downward. When warm water gets underneath, it can melt very fast. “It can have a runaway process … ” Eric Wolff, a glaciologist at the University of Cambridge said.

raise sea levels by more than 16 feetImpact of climate change

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet holds enough water to raise sea levels by more than 16 feet.  CNN predicts that this rise will cause devastating flooding in coastal towns and cities around the world. The BBC estimates that nearly half the world’s population live within 120 mile of a coastline. A sea level rise of 10 feet or more would inundate many of the world’s major cities, including London, New York and Shanghai. Other cites threatened include:

Location
2023 Population
Alexandria, Egypt 5,696,000
Bangkok, Thailand11,234,000
Boston4,367,000
Dhaka, Bangladesh23,936,000
Houston6,802,000
Jakarta, Indonesia11,436,000
Lagos, Nigeria16,536,000
Miami6,317,000
New Orleans1,021,000
Rotterdam, The Netherlands1,022,000
Venice, Italy642,000
Virginia Beach, Virginia1,496,000
World Economic ForumMacrotrends

CNN calculated that the Antarctic ice sheet already sheds an average of 150 billion metric tons of ice every year.  All of the the Antarctic ice sheet holds enough water to raise global sea levels by around 190 feet (around 58 meters).

rb-

The rapid melting of the Antarctic ice sheet and the potential for significant sea level rise highlight the urgent need to address climate change. If we do not take immediate and effective action, coastal communities and major cities around the world will face devastating consequences. Combating climate change is essential not only to protect our environment but also to safeguard our future. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing sustainable practices, we can help mitigate these impacts and ensure a livable planet for generations to come.

Massive Data Leak Exposes 10 Billion Unencrypted Passwords

Massive Data Leak Exposes 10 Billion Unencrypted PasswordsOn July 4, 2024, a record-setting data leak occurred. “Cybernews” reports that nearly 10 billion unique passwords were posted to the dark-web. The staggering 9,948,575,739 unique passwords are a mix of old and new data breaches. Listed in a hacker forum as rockyou2024.txt, these passwords were in plaintext. ‘Plaintext’ means that these passwords are not encrypted – they are actual passwords, released in a text file.

updated the older file with 1.5 billion passwordsAccording to the hacker, the new release is based on RockYou2021’s 8.4 billion records from 2021. Specifically, the hacker updated the older file with 1.5 billion passwords obtained between 2021 and 2024. “Cybernews” explains that the RockYou2021 compilation was an expansion of a data leak from a 2009 leak which included tens of millions of user passwords for social media accounts.

The hacker posted  “I updated rockyou21 with collected new data from recent leaked databases in various forums over this and last years.” Estimates suggest that the RockYou2024 file contains entries from 4,000 large databases of stolen credentials, spanning at least 20 years.

Data leak can target any system

data leak can target any systemImportantly, this data leak can target any system. The author believes that attackers can utilize the ten-billion-strong RockYou2024 compilation to target any system that isn’t protected against brute-force attacks. This includes everything from online and offline services to internet-facing cameras and industrial hardware.

“Cybernews” describes the RockYou2024 data leak file as “a mix of old and new data breaches,” indicating it may not be a new breach of 10 billion passwords. Nonetheless, compiling all these passwords into one massive, searchable database, they warn, “substantially heightens the risk of credential stuffing attacks.

Data breach enables attacks

How Attackers Access Your Accounts Using Credential StuffingCredential stuffing occurs when hackers use automated scripts to try various combinations of stolen usernames and passwords from different data breaches to hijack people’s accounts. For instance, someone might use a password obtained from the AT&T breach to see if you use the same password for your bank account.

To check if your passwords are compromised, visit these websites:

The RockYou2024 data leak list is new, so at the time of this writing, it’s unclear if any private data has been compromised as a direct result of this compilation. Anyone using online services should assume their passwords could be on this list.

In the meantime, don’t freakout about RockYou2024. Experts recommend:

  1. Continue your activities while adhering to password best practices, such as regularly changing passwords.
  2. Set up a password manager.
  3. Enable MFA wherever possible.
