5G is a Lie

5G is a lieWhen 5G was first being conceived, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) set two specific 5G download speed requirements. First was a Peak Data Throughput of 20 Gbps on the downlink. The second was a User Experienced Data Rate (the average for real-world conditions) of 100 Mbps on the downlink, according to Viet Nguyen, director of public relations and technology at 5G Americas.

5G download speedsThere’s an ocean-size difference between 20 Gbps and 100 Mbps. In the U.S., the operators haven’t even reached the ITU goal of at least 100 Mbps for 5G download speeds.

FierceWireless recently reported that data from Opensignal showed that 5G download speeds from the three big U.S. operators are in the 47 Mbps to 58 Mbps range. This comes nowhere close to the promised 5G downlink speeds of 100 Mbps. T-Mobile (TMUS) took top honors with 58 Mbps. The U.S. carriers trail the rest of the world badly, as the graphic from Statista shows.

Opensignal gathers its data by collecting billions of individual measurements daily from over 100 million devices on every major network operator around the globe.

5G download speedBased on this data, T-Mobile beat the other two carriers with an average 5G download speed of 58.1 Mbps. That is an increase from 49.2 Mbps. Meanwhile, 5G download speeds actually fell on both Verizon’s and AT&T’s networks. AT&T (T) download speeds dropped from 60.8 Mbps to 53.8 Mbps. And Verizon‘s (VZ) 5G download speeds dropped from a whopping 494.7 Mbps to 47.4 Mbps.

Ian Fogg, an Opensignal analyst, told Fierce that the dramatic drop in Verizon’s 5G download speeds is their network architecture. In earlier reports, Verizon’s 5G network was mostly based on mmWave spectrum. VZ was delivering super-fast speeds, but the availability of its 5G network was only 0.4%. He explained “Now, Verizon has launched 5G on lower-band spectrum [sub-6 GHz], and its availability has gone up to 9.5%, but speed has gone down.

Mr. Fogg said that the U.S. carriers have been constrained by their access to mid-band spectrum. “The most popular spectrum type globally is 3.5 GHz … Most networks globally have used that as their only 5G band. And that’s why in most countries download speeds are five to six times faster than 4G with an average of 300 Mbps.

5G connection timeU.S. 5G users are connected to 5G only 21 percent of the time. According to the Opensignal data, T-Mobile is also beating Verizon and AT&T in terms of 5G availability. Opensignal found that customers of all three carriers have seen much greater time connected to an active 5G signal than in its previous reports. T-Mobile is seeing the best 5G availability since it’s been expanding its network with the 2.5 GHz spectrum it got from Sprint.

T-Mobile users were connected to 5G about 30.1% of the time, a jump from 22.5%. AT&T 5G users saw an increase from 10.3% to 18.8%. Verizon users saw availability jump from 0.4% to 9.5%, as previously mentioned, due to the impact of Verizon’s nationwide 5G launch and use of dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS).

Upload speeds

Upload speedsFinally, Opensignal also looked at 5G upload speeds. Upload speeds impact the sharing of photos, videos and other large files. Again, the winner was T-Mobile with an upload speed of 14.0 Mbps; Verizon followed at 11.9 Mbps; and AT&T users got 8.0 Mbps.

Until 5G network growing pains are over, the trends of ongoing performance degradation and increasing customer dissatisfaction are likely to continue, creating the impression that 5G is failing to live up to the hype.

If you keep your passwords on your mobile, you are putting you privacy at risk. Even if you keep them in a note, a document or even in auto-fill on your mobile, you’re putting your data at risk. The article says if you lose your phone, someone might easily see your “cheat sheet.”  Because everyone snoops through mobile phones. Even if you store your passwords on your mobile phone they can end up stored in the cloud, still putting your accounts at risk. Instead consider a password manager such as Keeper, or LastPass. That way all of your passwords can be accessed by you using one strong master password.

Your face and fingerprints

There are many reasons why biometrics like fingerprints don’t make you more secure. Facial recognition apps are more dangerous that using a password. Your private photos and videos

You may have cleaned up your Facebook account, but what about your phone? What photos and videos do you store on your phone? If you have photos you wouldn’t want your spouse, children, or boss to see, then you shouldn’t store those photos on your smartphone according to the article. Media stored on your phone is saved in the cloud outside of your control.

Your naughty photos are one problem. Another is any photos containing private information. While photos of credit cards and ID can help you keep track of “what’s in your wallet,” they can also leave your information vulnerable to hacking. Again the photos are stored on the cloud. As with your naughty photos, Readers Digest suggests you store your pictures ID on a PC that only you have access to in a password-protected album.

Digital banking in the US is expected to grow from 197 million users in March 2021 to 217 million by 2025. But the convenience online banking affords—the ability to bank anywhere, anytime— comes at a cost: your privacy. Carrying your bank account with you on your phone means that you’re risking losing control of it in the event you lose your phone…or even lose track of an old phone that you no longer use they warn.

To manage the risk, you might consider avoiding doing your online banking on your phone. Instead, do it on a computer that never leaves your home. If you find that you simply must take your online banking with you wherever you go, just be sure to use a strong, unique password to unlock your banking app.

Your home address

Storing your home address in navigation app like Waze or Google Maps makes getting home from anywhere super-easy. But it can also leave you vulnerable. If a thief ends up with your phone, they can simply click on “home,” or “work,” and see what you’ve stored, and pay you a visit.

Use strong password protection on your mobile phone

Use strong password protectionThis is your first and strongest line of defense. You need a strong password, because one that’s easy to guess could unlock your phone and allow someone to override the biometric safeguards.

Skip the simple 4-digit PIN and instead create a strong password that contains a string of at least eight characters that include some combination of letters, numbers, and special characters that don’t form recognizable words or phrases, especially those that could be associated with you.

Password protection comes with another safeguard according to Consumer Reports. After several unsuccessful tries to enter a passcode, some phones will lock your device for a short period of time. This slows down attempts to access your phone. There’s also a setting on the latest Android phones that automatically erases all of your personal data after 10 unsuccessful log in attempts. Here’s how to activate it. Go to:

  • Settings | Lock Screen | Secure Lock Settings | and toggle the Auto Factory Reset option to switch it on. (The labels may vary slightly on other Android models.)

Enable location tracking

You must turn on the global positioning settings (GPS) in order to find a missing phone on a map. To enable this setting on an Android phone go to:

  • Settings | Security | Find My Device and toggle Find My Device.

Back up your photos and videos

Consider using a carrier-neutral service to back up your mobileConsider using a carrier-neutral service to back up your mobile. Apple’s iCloud or Android’s Google Drive may make it easier to retrieve your memories should your next phone be from a different carrier. Phone carriers, phone makers, and operating systems also offer free over-the-air backup for photos, settings, and more. These options can limit you if you select a new carrier for your next mobile phone.

Write down your phone’s unique ID number

Smartphones have a unique serial number known as an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) or MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifier). Unlike other information stored on the phone’s removable SIM card, these numbers are etched into its circuits and are difficult to alter. Your carrier already has this number and can use it to put the phone on a missing phone list. Some police departments ask for either of these numbers when you report a stolen phone. With the numbers they’ll be able to return a phone to you if it’s recovered. To find your phone’s unique IMEI or MEID number, use any of the following steps:

  • Dial *#06# from your phone. The number may pop up on your screen.
  • On an Android phone go to: Settings | About Phone. The number should be on that screen.

After the phone is gone, the sooner you act, the better your chances of retrieving your phone and securing your data. Here are key actions to take according to CR.

Seek and (possibly) destroy your mobile phone

erase the data on yourphoneIt is important that the minute you learn your phone is missing, you send it commands you think are appropriate. Time is of the essence because these next steps requires your phone to be on and have some battery life left.

As soon as possible, call or text your phone from another device. That might be all it takes if your phone is just misplaced nearby.

Then log on to your Find My Phone service from a secure device. For an Android phone, go to Google’s Find My Device in a browser. Use the service to make your phone play a sound. You can also lock the screen and display a message for someone who finds your phone. An honest person may come across your device and notify you via the contact info on the screen. If you think the bad guys have your phone, you can erase the data on it using Find My Device.

Report the Loss to Your Service Provider

Inform your mobile carrier that your phone has been lost or stolen. It can suspend service to prevent anyone from using the device on its network. They may also mark the phone as unusable even on a new carrier or with a different SIM card. Note that your device will still be usable over WiFi. You can notify your provider by going to one of its stores, calling, or logging on to its website.

  • AT&T: Call 800-331-0500 or go to AT&T’s Suspend page.
  • T-Mobile: Call 800-937-8997 or go to My T-Mobile, and in the My Line section click on your device name to find the Report Lost or Stolen option.
  • Verizon: Call 800-922-0204 or go to the Suspend or Reconnect Service page in My Verizon and follow the prompts.

Change Your Important Passwords

Once you realize your phone is in danger, go to a secure PC,  log in to every account you had on your phone (banking, shopping, email, etc.) and change your passwords. Start with your email account. Then change the financial and shopping accounts that have your credit card on file, such as Amazon or your bank. Next move on to social networks. If you’ve set up a password manager, this task will be easy.

Report the Loss to the Police and File an Insurance Claim

Notify the police. This not only launches an official recovery attempt but also helps speed up the process of making an insurance claim (if your covered). You might also need a police report to dispute fraudulent credit card charges, and some credit card issuers will reimburse you for a stolen phone.

Wipe your mobile phone anyway

malicious app or spywareIf you recover your phone You never know what malicious app or spyware someone may have installed while the phone was out of your hands. To be on the safe side, reset the phone to factory settings. If you see an option to erase everything, make sure you select it. Before you nuke the phone, check your backups to make sure that you have copies of all the photos and videos that were on your phone.  On an Android phone, go to:

  • Settings | System | Advanced | Reset Options | Erase All Data (factory reset).

What Michigan City Has The Fastest Download Speeds

fastest download speedsThe politicians in Lansing are not known for doing anything good quickly. But they do have fast internet. New rankings from RootMetrics showed that Lansing, Michigan had one of the fastest download speeds in the U.S. during the second half of 2020. Lansing ranked 6th out of 125 markets in the RootMetrics report.

Lansing’s median download speed across the major carriers was 43.7 Mbps. Michigan’s capital city had faster aggregate median download speeds than tech-heavy markets. Lansing ranked better than Chicago (36 Mbps), San Fransico (34.6 Mbps), Dallas (32.3 Mbps), or Los Angeles (31.6 Mbps). 

Michigan metro’s rated surprisingly well, overall. 

  • Detroit ranked 16th nationally at 39.5 Mbps.
  • Ann Arbor came in 47th with 34.4  Mbps.
  • Flint‘s 31.8 Mbps earned it the 59th spot.

The article says that speeds of 30 Mbps are typically fast enough for users to enjoy smooth gaming and fast file downloads.

The metropolitan areas with the worst download speeds are spread across the U.S.  The report says Antelope Valley, CA (20.0 Mbps), Madison, WI (19.3 Mbps), and  Fresno, CA (18.8 Mbps) were the worst.

RootMetrics told FierceWireless smaller markets like Lansing have some advantages over the mega-markets like Chicago or Los Angles.  Rishikesh Bhandari, RootMetrics RF engineer explained,

Technology rollouts and the optimization of those technologies (such as 5G or higher-order carrier aggregation, among others) can often take longer in bigger cities precisely because of size …  there are far more people for the carriers to serve—and over much larger geographic distances … the carriers must ensure smooth technology deployments … and that can take time, especially in bigger cities, with millions of people and thousands of square miles to cover.

How they test the fastest download speeds

RootMetrics conducts its tests with unmodified Android-based smartphones purchased off the shelf at regular mobile phone stores. To determine which metropolitan markets across the U.S. were home to the fastest and slowest speeds, the Bellevue, WA based firm aggregated the overall median download speeds recorded across all network technologies (4G LTE and 5G, where applicable) for AT&T (T), T-Mobile (TMUS), and Verizon (VZ)n in each of the 125 most populated metropolitan markets in the country and ranked them from fastest to slowest.

Will 5G Save Broadband Over Power Line?

Will 5G Save Broadband Over Power Lines?5G could resurrect broadband over powerline (BPL). At least that is the hope of AT&T (T). For those who don’t remember the heady rise of BPL, it grew out of an attempt to use the existing electrical grid to deliver broadband everywhere without having to build infrastructure anywhere. A few broadband over power line systems with paying customers got off the ground but they were all gone by the end of 2010.

ATT logoAT&T started testing BPL renamed Project AirGig in 2016. And now in 2019 FierceWireless is reporting AT&T is planning more trials of AirGig that will involve 5G. The telecom behemoth is also working with vendors and technology partners to build commercial-grade 5G equipment for those trials.

Hank Kafka, vice president of access architecture and standards at AT&T, told FierceWireless the company isn’t ready to offer details but said Project AirGig is making progress and it will be a very complementary technology to 5G. He told the author that “5G is very high on that list.”

Specifically, AirGig could be used to extend 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) signals beyond their current range. The article says AT&T has launched a mobile 5G service in 19 markets so far using mmWave spectrum, but using that spectrum has drawbacks because it has a limited range compared to lower spectrum bands.

Air5G small cellGig technology includes a radio distributed antenna system (RDAS) and mmWave surface wave launcher. The RDAS reconstructs signals for multigigabit mobile and fixed deployments. The mmWave surface wave launchers can power themselves using inductive power devices without an electrical connection. These devices then create a high-speed signal that travels along or near the wire, providing a broadband connection.

I covered AT&T’s 2018 AirGig trial here. In that trial with Georgia Power Company, the telco used LTE as the transport technology.  Mr. Kafka explained that in 2018 suitable 5G equipment was not available. “At the time of the trial 5G equipment was large and bulky,” he said. Now that 5G is commercially deployed in some markets AT&T is working with vendors to get the right type of gear for the new trials.

Not only could AirGig potentially extend the reach of 5G, but it could also be used as a backhaul technology. “If you set up an architecture where AirGig is connecting to 5G radios, it is acting like backhaul … And you can get gigabit speeds and beyond.”

5G backhaulHe also said that commercialized AirGig would be a good fit for small cells because of the way it is architected. In other words, a wireless signal could travel down the power line and handoff to small cells or be used to backhaul wireless traffic from small cells. This could be profitable for carriers who are getting resistance from municipalities over the siting of their small cells for 5G. AirGig might allow small cells to be co-located with utility infrastructure.

Apparently, AT&T doesn’t have plans to commercially deploy AirGig in the near term, but it has rolled out 5G service in 19 U.S. cities that could benefit from the goals of the BPL AirGig experiment including:

  • IN: Indianapolis

Maybe AirGig is on the slow track because there aren’t any smartphones that can use it yet. The Verge points out that AT&T’s only available true 5G device is a mobile hotspot that can’t be purchased in stores.

Holy Sell Out Batman

Batman is being used to pump 5GThe Caped Crusader has sold out. While the full benefits of next-generation wireless – 5G won’t be realized until at least mid-2020, Batman is being used to pimp 5G.  AT&T used The guardian of Gotham to create demand for mixed-reality at last month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain. The mixed-reality experience featured DC Comics Batman and the Scarecrow battling it out on the MWC show floor.

Fierce Videoaugmented reality headset reports that AT&T (T), Ericsson (ERIC), Intel (INTC), and Warner Bros., with DC, are using 5G technology and edge computing to build a location-based mixed-reality experience. For the walk-in experience at MWC, visitors put on an augmented reality headset. There they witnessed a 2 to 3-minute experience.

Ade Kushimo, director of business development, IoT, and emerging business at Ericsson told Fierce Video, “The really cool part of the experience is going to be the fact that you have this virtual, digital content being embedded into your physical space. That gives you that mixed reality experience.

Sensorama (patented 1962) which was an arcade-style theatre cabinet that would stimulate all the senses, not just sight and sound.

Mixed reality experience with Batman

Doug Matheson, vice president of strategic business development at Ericsson, said the proof-of-concept experience demonstrated that 5G technology (both radio and core) could be combined with intellectual property to create a mixed reality experience that’s both mobile and untethered.

In order to create a good mixed-reality experience, image lag has to be kept to a minimum. Image lag will make you dizzy and ruin the experience. That means that compute power has to be pushed out to the edge of the network to reside closer to the end-user. The compute power needed to process a mixed reality experience can’t live in a centralized data center somewhere.

Cloud computingThe cloud and edge network architecture allows for heavy computing to be done away from the device. So, the goal is to shift processing to the cloud and transport it there using a 5G network. The Batman demo ran on a fully integrated 5G network using Ericsson radio base stations 5G network technology will help supply the lower latency and higher speeds and enabled by Intel Xeon processors and the Intel 5G mobile trial platform.

Mobile Marketer says that 5G will have a huge impact on AT&T’s mobile network. Its data traffic has grown more than 470,000% since 2007, with video making up half of the mobile data. Video may expand its share of data traffic to more than 75% by 2022, according to the company’s estimates.

Batman now works for AT&T following its acquisition of Time Warner who owned Warner Brothers, which owned DC Comics, the home of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Lex Luthor, Oswald Cobblepot, and the Flash.
