Data Center in Space

Data Center in SpaceCloud computing is old technology. An LA-based start-up wants to move your data beyond the cloud. Cloud Constellation wants to store your data in space. The firm is planning on building a satellite-based data center that will have room for petabytes of data and may start orbiting Earth as early as 2019 according to Computerworld.

spacebelt_logoCEO Scott Sobhani told the author Cloud Constellation is looking upward to give companies and governments direct access to their data from anywhere in the world. Its data centers on satellites would let users bypass the Internet and the thousands of miles of fiber their bits now have to traverse in order to circle the globe. And instead of just transporting data, the company’s satellites would store it, too.

The article describes the pitch like this – Data centers and cables on Earth are susceptible to hacking and to national regulations covering things like government access to information. They can also slow data down as it goes through switches and from one carrier to another, and all those carriers need to get paid.

petabytes of data orbiting EarthCloud Constellation’s system, called SpaceBelt, would be a one-stop-shop for data storage and transport. Need to set up a new international office? No need to call a local carrier or data-center operator. Cloud Constellation plans to sell capacity on SpaceBelt to cloud providers that could offer such services.

Security is another selling point. Data centers on satellites would be safe from disasters like earthquakes, tornadoes, and tsunami. Internet-based hacks wouldn’t directly threaten the SpaceBelt network. The system will use hardware-assisted encryption, and just to communicate with the satellites an intruder would need an advanced Earth station that couldn’t just be bought off the shelf, Mr. Sobhani told ComputerWorld.

How do you reboot a server in space?Cloud Constellation’s secret sauce is a technology that it developed to cut the cost of all this from US$4 billion to about US$460 million, Sobhani said. The network would begin with eight or nine satellites and grow from there. Together, the linked satellites would form a computing cloud in space that could do things like transcode video as well as storing bits. Each new generation of spacecraft would have more modern data center gear inside.

The company plans to store petabytes of data across this network of satellites. Computerworld points out that the SpaceBelt hardware would have to be certified for use in space. Hardware in space is more prone to bombardment by cosmic particles that can cause errors. Most computer gear in space today is more expensive and less advanced than what’s on the ground, satellite analyst Tim Farrar of TMF Associates said.

satelliteTaneja Group storage analyst Mike Matchett told the author that the idea of petabytes in space is not as far-fetched as it may sound. A petabyte can already fit on a few shelves in a data center rack, and each generation of storage gear packs more data into the same amount of space. This is likely to get better even before the first satellites are built.

But if you do put your data in space, don’t expect it to float free from the laws of Earth. Under the United Nations Outer Space Treaty of 1967, the country where a satellite is registered still has jurisdiction over it after it’s in space, said Michael Listner, an attorney and founder of Space Law & Policy Solutions. If Cloud Constellations’ satellites are registered in the US, for example, the company will have to comply with subpoenas from the U.S. and other countries, he said.

For example, the US hasn’t passed any laws that directly address data storage in orbit, but in 1990 it extended patents to space, said Frans von der Dunk, a professor of space law at the University of Nebraska. “Looking towards the future, that gap could always be filled.”

On the Bach Seat, we have covered different theories about data centers several times. These theories included manure, sewer gas, and used cars to power DC’s as well as proposed data centers underwater and at KMart. This one however seems the most unique, considering the start-up costs to build and launch satellites.

Television Sells Your Viewing Habits

– Updated 03-26-2017 –  Vizio will pay $2.2 million to the FTC and the state of New Jersey to settle a lawsuit alleging it collected customers’ television-watching habits without their permission.

In addition to the $2.2 million in payments, Vizio will now have to get clear consent from viewers before collecting and sharing data on their viewing habits. It’ll also have to delete all data gathered by these methods before March 1st, 2016 according to the Verge.

Television Sells Your Viewing HabitsJust in time for the Black Friday consumerism orgy of spending, Help Net Security reports that you are giving away more than cash when you buy a Smart Television from Best Buy or whoever. It turns out that owners of Smart TVs manufactured by California-based consumer electronics company Vizio (VZIO) viewing habits are being tracked and sold to third parties. The Vizio privacy policy says;

Vizio logo… VIZIO will use Viewing Data together with your IP address and other Non-Personal Information in order to inform third party selection and delivery of targeted and re-targeted advertisements … delivered to smartphones, tablets, PCs or other internet-connected devices that share an IP address or other identifier with your Smart TV.

Vizio’s competitors Samsung (005930) and LG Electronics (LGLD) can also track users’ viewing habits via their smart TV offerings, ProPublica‘s Julia Angwin pointed out, but the feature has to be explicitly turned on by the users. The collection of viewing data by Vizio’s Smart TVs is turned on by default, as is the Smart Interactivity feature that manages it.

Data miningAccording to the IEEE, Vizio smart TVs can track data related to whatever TV programming and related commercials you’re watching and link such data with the time, date, channel, and TV service provider. On most of the over 15 million Smart TVs sold, Vizio will also track whether you view TV programs live or later on. Vizio knows what you’re watching even if it’s a DVD being played on a gaming console or a show being watched via cable TV. The identification tracking technology can differentiate between 100 billion data points.

While, in theory, IP addresses are not personal information, they actually can be linked to individuals if there is enough information (specific attributes like age, profession, etc.) tied to it.

Even though users can turn off the spy technology, which will not won’t affect the device’s performance, the problem is that many, many users won’t bother reading the privacy policy or change the default settings once they set up the TV and start using them.

TechHive reports that backlash against intrusive spying has started. Two lawsuits (Reed v. Cognitive Media Network, Inc. (PDF) and David Watts et. al. v Vizio Holdings Inc et. al. (PDF)) have been filed in California against Vizio and their partners about their data collection habits.

The suits accuse Vizio and Cognitive of secretly installing tracking software on the former’s smart TVs in a way that violates various federal and state laws.

Legal systemThe suits allege that Vizio violated the Video Privacy Protection Act. The Video Privacy Protection Act prohibits any company engaged in rental, sale, or delivery of audio-visual content and not necessarily just videotapes from divulging any personally identifiable information about its customer to a third party, except where the customer has clearly consented to such data sharing.

Of course, Vizio has previously argued it’s not a videotape service provider at all, and so this particular law doesn’t apply to it.

Data Never Sleeps

Domo has created this infographic which shows just how fast data proliferates. The amount of data that can be produced in a single minute is mind-numbing and shows no sign of slowing down. CEO and chairman of the Domo board Josh James blogged; “Since 2013, the global internet population grew nearly 20 percent – from 2.4 billion to 3.2 billion people“. These new users are using new services in an unprecedented number. Domo says that every minute on the web, users:

  • Vine users play 1,041,666 six second videos.
  • Snapchat users share 284,722 Snaps
  • Buzzfeed users view 34,150 videos
  • Uber passengers take 694 rides.

Facebook Friends Without BenefitsThe USPTO has granted Facebook (FB) a patent that could be used to help lenders determine your creditworthiness. The Social Networker plans to allow creditors to look at who is in your social network to judge your creditworthiness.

It seems that your shiftless uncle Louie is going to determine if you get a mortgage. According to BI, the patent states:

… When an individual applies for a loan, the lender examines the credit ratings of members of the individual’s social network who are connected to the individual through authorized nodes. If the average credit rating of these members is at least a minimum credit score, the lender continues to process the loan application. Otherwise, the loan application is rejected.

TFacebook logohe patent was first discovered by Atlanta legal tech start-up SmartUp was part of a bundle of patents Facebook acquired in 2010 when it purchased the patents from failed social network Friendster for $40 million.

BI reports that the patent may walk a legal tight rope. The U.S. Equal Credit Opportunity Act requires creditors to tell applicants why they have been denied credit, so using social data to determine someone’s credit risk could walk a fine line. Despite federal law, the author points out that financial institutions are already using applicant’s social data to help verify their identity. For example, Lending Club, and Affirm use online data for decision-making.

You Can Stop Cyber AttacksSeems like every week another major cyber attack is reported. Cyber attacks expose the personal details of millions of users worldwide. Companies are spending over $70 billion to fight off cyber attacks. But even with the best systems in place, hackers can still easily breach the company’s defenses if staff aren’t also being security conscious.

TIntel Security Group (aka McAfee)he Business Insider spoke with Christopher Young, general manager of Intel‘s (INTC) Security Group (aka McAfee) about cybersecurity. He told BI that employees can prevent data theft. The Intel GM says there are two things that every employee should be doing to help keep their company safe from cybercriminals.

Think before you click. That is the number one thing that every average employee in an organization can do,” Intel’s Young said.  He cites a recent Intel survey of security professionals (PDF), which found that humans are still the weakest link when it comes to an organization’s security. According to the report, successful attacks against companies most often stem from three things:

  1. humans are still the weakest linkUser errors caused by lack of awareness,
  2. Unofficial use of online services, and
  3. Using social media sites at work.

Basically, employees are clicking links they shouldn’t be, which can give attackers a way in. One way attackers get in is through the inbox. Mr. Young told BI

Emails are the number one way that attackers are getting in … They [cyber criminals] are crafting emails and attaching malicious files to those emails and their entry points into these organizations is often through tricking the average user or click on an email attachment and launch a malicious file.

employees need to be vigilant and ask questionsI recently wrote how attackers have honed their spear-phishing skills, making dangerous emails less obvious. BI says employees need to be vigilant and ask questions about all the email they receive that raises even the slightest suspicion. Intel’s Young warns staff to question every email.

You should ask why am I getting the email? Why is there a file attached to it? Why am I being asked to click on it? And you should ask all of this before clicking.

The second big thing which Business Insider recommends that employees should do to help keep their company safe is to report any suspicious emails or attachments. And if someone does click on a link or download a file that raises eyebrows, report it as soon as possible so that the company’s security team can investigate quickly. Mr. Young explains that an early alert can help contain an attack. “So if the average employee smells something they should report it.”
