Bill Gates: Broadway Star You Never Knew ExistedWho would have thought that the mastermind behind Windows would ever trade coding for choreography? Ernie Smith at Tedium surfaced a video of Microsoft CEO Bill Gates on a Broadway stage. In the fall of 1992, Microsoft spent $2 million to turn Mr. Gates into a Broadway star. The show, “How to Succeed in Business with Workgroup Computing,” opened (and closed) at Broadway’s Gershwin Theater, one of the biggest theaters in New York.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11The show celebrated and promoted Windows for Workgroups. Microsoft released Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in November 1993. It introduced support for 32-bit file access, drive sharing, and group calendaring. It also had built-in fax capabilities.

What’s new in Windows for Workgroups 3.11

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was the first time Microsoft embraced connectivity on the PC. They added a Winsock package for dial-up connectivity. Winsock is an API that allows Windows network software to access network services, especially TCP/IP. Microsoft later replaced Winsock with a 32-bit stack add-on package that provided TCP/IP support in WFW 3.11. They also increased WFW connectivity with NetWare networks. Microsoft also introduced support for Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) cards and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) drivers. Additionally, they introduced a Remote access service, allowing users to access their computers remotely.

The commercial play highlights some of the greatest hits of the 1990s: yuppies, dance tunes, the Blues Brothers, 90s clothes, and Bill Gates trying aerobics.

The show cast Gates as a hero computer consultant who saves two employees, Jake and Max, from an impossible deadline. Gates demonstrated the miracle of computer networking to the beleaguered Kitty Carnival Amusement company employees using Windows for Workgroups. One of the actors exclaimed, “We’re not worthy!” in typical “Wayne’s World” fashion. Gates even attempted a dance routine with some performers dressed as the Blues Brothers, resulting in a symphony of misplaced steps and flailing arms. Mr Gates said,

That was so bad, I thought [then Microsoft CEO] Ballmer was going to retch.”

Bills Gate’s Broadway debut did not do much for Windows for Workgroups. Microsoft Lore says that the WFW product was called Windows for the warehouse in Redmond. WFW was superseded by Windows NT, which was released while WFW was still available.

Are You Ready for the MetaverseThe metaverse is a vision of what the tech bros (think biased stakeholders with a personal interest in the success of the metaverse Sam Bankman-Fried and Elon Musk) want the next iteration of the internet to be. Their vision of the metaverse is a collection of interconnected virtual worlds. The virtual worlds are shared immersive, persistent, 3D virtual spaces. In this metaverse, they believe humans can experience life in ways they could not in the physical world (of course for money). McKinsey predicts that the metaverse can generate up to $5 trillion by 2030.

The “metaverse” lets companies dodge negative baggage associated with social media. “As long as you can make technology seem fresh and new and cool, you can avoid regulation,” researcher Joan Donovan told The Washington Post. “You can run defense on that for several years before the government can catch up.

The Metaverse requires improvements

Despite the media hype that the metaverse has received, it still requires improvements to become a reality. A recent survey by network gear maker Ciena found that 71% of professionals can see the metaverse becoming part of existing work practices in the next two years. The study also found that businesses see problems getting into the metaverse. They stated “... unreliable network performance and associated costs were cited as the top concerns holding organizations back …” Daniel Pimental, from the University of Oregon, explains that advances in several technologies are needed to make the metaverse real. He explained, “… advancements in artificial intelligence – computer vision – blockchain technology, and increased bandwidth with 5G connectivity, will form the foundation…

It needs better networks

Loading spinnerOur current networks won’t work. They take too long to deliver data. Dan Rampton of Meta says the metaverse experience will need a customer latency of less than 20 milliseconds. Latency is the delay when moving data from one place to another. In the metaverse, latency is the total delay of signal between the user and the data center that is controlling the metaverse experience. Are you old enough to remember the dreaded “buffering” screen? PCMag found that the best 5G latency in 2022 ranged from 39 – 47 milliseconds from the major carriers. Doug Dawson put the 10-20 millisecond latency into context.

  • Transmission delay is the time required to get packets from a customer to be ready to route to the Internet. He cites some of his clients who say that the latency on their fiber network typically ranges between 4 and 8 milliseconds. Cable systems are slower and can approach the 20 ms limit. Older technologies like DSL have much larger latencies. Low-orbit satellite networks, will not be fast enough to meet the 20 ms goal established by Meta. Some wireless technologies also have low latency as long as there aren’t multiple hops between a customer and the core.
  • The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance says that 5G networks should offer 10ms latency in general.
  • Processing delay is the time required by the originating ISP to sort between all of the packets received from users and route each appropriately.
  • Propagation delay is due to the distance a signal travels. It takes a lot longer for a signal to travel from Tokyo to Baltimore than it takes to travel from Baltimore and Washington DC.
  • Queuing delays are the time required at the terminating end of the transmission. Since a metaverse connection is almost certainly going to be hosted at a data center, this is the time it takes to receive and appropriately route the signal to the right place in the data center.

Forbes - Five Ways The Metaverse Is Impacting CorporationsThe metaverse’s virtual environments will require high-end computers, gaming consoles, and VR headsets. These can be expensive. In 2021, Bill Gates noted that most people don’t have VR goggles and motion capture gloves to accurately represent their expression, body language, and the quality of their voice. Harvard‘s Eileen McGivney writes:

The hardware that is currently used to access metaverse experiences, like VR headsets, are not affordable and are difficult to wear for many people from groups who are underrepresented in the technology industry.

People with mobility issues will find navigating a real-time 3D avatar in the metaverse frustrating. Ms. McGivney offers some examples like people with limited mobility in their hands who will struggle with controllers. Others might have difficulty if they wear glasses. Also, most current headsets can’t be worn over head coverings or many hairstyles, like religious headscarves and natural Black hairstyles.

The metaverse is expensive

Acquiring the hardware to get on the metaverse can be expensive. Head-mounted devices (HMDs), can range from a DIY Google Cardboard that requires the user to provide a mobile phone to the Meta Quest 2 – formally known as Oculus Quest 2 which costs $1500. Mid-range devices are pricey, the HTC Vive costs $569, and the Valve Index VR costs $999.

There is no search engine in the metaverse. There is no way to find out more about what the content creators are sending you. The cost of creating content for the metaverse will keep many from presenting information that the big content creators don’t want out there. The cost to develop a metaverse social app is estimated to cost $25,000-$400,000 according to the marketing firm Appinventiv.

Interoperability

There is no unified metaverse. Companies are developing their vision of the metaverse in a vacuum. Major players are developing their own technology for the metaverse.

Then there’s the need for interoperability. Interoperability will allow you to take virtual items like clothes or money from one platform to another. Many experts believe this is vital for the metaverse to work. Most VR software is based on a “virtual world generator,” which is from a specific VR headset vendor. This kit provides the basic programs, drivers, data, and graphic-rendering libraries. There will be legal and commercial challenges too, apart from figuring out who will act as the police in the metaverse.

Cybersickness

Cybersickness in Virtual Reality Versus Augmented Reality There are real-world concerns about physical and mental health in the metaverse. There are physical risks from tripping or falling while wearing metaverse headsets. But people are also reporting symptoms of “cybersickness.” Cybersickness is described as unpleasant symptoms caused by being in the metaverse. Symptoms include:

  • Nausea (sweating, difficulty concentrating, stomach awareness),
  • Oculomotor disturbance (headache, eyestrain, blurred vision), and
  • Disorientation (dizziness with open and closed eyes, vertigo).

These are caused by the delay between actual head movements and the generated image.

Mental health risks 

There are also mental health risks. Because VR provides a much more realistic experience than watching something on a computer screen, the emotional and mental impacts are more intense. Plus, all the downsides of the current internet like violent pornography, the black market, sex trafficking, and criminal activities are magnified in VR.  Finally, people who are immersed in digital worlds often are doing so at the expense of exercising, breathing fresh air, and socializing physically.

The metaverse must be private

The metaverse must be privateDespite the promise of the metaverse, there remain risks. As Charlie Bell, Microsoft’s executive vice president of security pointed out in a recent blog post: “The problems of yesterday’s and today’s internet—impersonation, attempts to steal credentials, social engineering, nation-state espionage, inevitable vulnerabilities—will be with us in the metaverse.” Harvard’s McGivney concurs, “Many of these technologies are also designed in a commercial environment that prioritizes profit over things like data privacy

The metaverse is being developed by corporations whose business
models rely on collecting an increasingly detailed and wide range of data on every user. The technologies can track people’s
movements (e.g., movement, eye tracking) and emotions. The data collection will create a “motion signature.” A motion signature will connect some tracking data to a name, for example, now tracking data in many other places are attached to the same name. This increases the effectiveness of threats based on the inference of protected health information from tracking data.

Is that your boss

Microsoft warns that in the metaverse, fraud, and phishing attacks targeting your identity could come from a familiar face – literally. A metaverse attacker can create an avatar who impersonates a coworker, or a teller in a virtual bank lobby asking for your information. It could be an impersonation of your CEO inviting you to a meeting in a malicious virtual conference room.

TNero connected to the Matrixhe dystopian vision of a future where we are constantly connected to the metaverse to feel good is looming. Elon Musk’s implanted brain-machine interface Neuralink, can link the metaverse directly to a user’s mind which can cause the release of dopamine. Research shows that the brain may eventually begin to rely on that experience to release dopamine and feel good. As a result, people can become addicted to the metaverse to feel “normal.”

I agree with Scientific American. Given the world’s unpredictability, I have a hard time ruling out the possibility that an unholy alliance of big tech and the military will foist an implant-enabled metaverse on us. After all, as the real world gets scarier, the metaverse might become more and more appealing. In our frightening future, the metaverse, not religion, might serve as the opiate of the masses.

Why CTRL + ALT + DELETE

Why CTRL + ALT + DELETEEvery PC user has given their computer the three-finger salute as it locked up – frequently at the most inopportune time. But why CTRL + ALT + DELETE? Turns out the three-finger salute was a 10-minute hack to make programmers life easier. The CTRL + ALT + DELETE was born at IBM (IBM) in the early 1980s.

IBM PCProject Acorn was the code name for the rush project to build IBM’s new personal computer – because Apple (AAPL) and RadioShack were already selling small stand-alone computers. David Bradley was part of the team working from the IBM offices in Boca Raton, FL on the IBM PC.

Mental Floss reports that the programmers’ working on the IBM PC had to manually restart the entire system whenever the computer encountered a coding glitch. This was a waste of time. Mr. Bradley told Mental Floss,  “Some days, you’d be rebooting every five minutes as you searched for the problem … The tedious tests made the coders want to pull their hair out.

IBM logoMr. Bradley worked on everything from writing input/output programs to troubleshooting wire-wrap boards on Project Acorn. In order to placate the programmers, Mr. Bradley created a hack. His hack was a keyboard shortcut that triggered a system reset without memory tests.

To Mr. Bradley CTRL + ALT + DELETE, was just another item to tick off his to-do list. He says. “It was five minutes, 10 minutes of activity, and then I moved on to the next of the 100 things that needed to get done.

The engineer chose the keys by location—with the DEL key across the keyboard from the other two, it seemed unlikely that all three would be accidentally pressed at the same time. Mr. Bradley never intended to make the shortcut available to customers, nor did he expect it to become a cultural icon. It was meant for his fellow coders, for whom every second counted.

Thank IBM for CTRL + ALT + DELETE

The IBM team managed to finish Acorn on schedule. In the fall of 1981, the IBM PC hit the market. It was a dull gray box beneath a green screen monitor. Marketers predicted that the company would sell less than 50,000 units a year. IBM execs thought that estimate was too optimistic. They were all wrong. Computing would never be the same.

As PC sales took off – few users were aware of Mr. Bradley’s shortcut hidden in their machines. That changed in the early 1990s when Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows 3 took off. Now Microsoft’s Windows PCs were crashing and the infamous “blue screen of death” plagued Windows users. A quick fix to the BSOD spread by word of mouth (this was before the WWW) – CTRL + ALT + DELETE. Suddenly, Mr. Bradley’s quick hack was a big deal.

At an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the IBM PC industry big-wigs gathered for a panel discussion. Mental Floss says that the first question to the panel bypassed Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and was for David Bradley. Mr. Bradley, who has always been surprised by how popular his CTRL + ALT + DELETE hack made him, was quick to deflect the glory. The programmer joked;

I have to share the credit, I may have invented it, but I think Bill made it famous.

Bill Gates has publicly admitted that CTRL + ALT + DELETE was a mistake – but the company he founded continues to use Mr. Bradley’s hack. In Windows 10  the keyboard combination starts Windows Security, which lets you lock the computer, switch to a different user, log off, start Task Manager, or shut down/reboot the computer.

Windows 95 – There’s An App For That

Windows 95 - There's An App For ThatWith all the problems Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 10 has had lately – a few of us of a certain vintage may long for simpler days when we controlled what Windows did, not Redmond. Well, it’s time to relax because Windows 95 is now available as an app for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

The Verge writes that Slack developer Felix Rieseberg is responsible for this ingenious app. The operating system is encased in electron, a framework for building cross-platform apps with HTML and CSS.

Windows 95 desktopNow nostalgia lovers can play around with Windows 95 in an electron app. Mr. Rieseberg has published the source code and app installers for this project on Github, and classic apps like Solitaire, Wordpad, phone dialer, MS Paint, and Minesweeper all run as you’d expect. Sadly, Internet Explorer isn’t fully functional as it simply refuses to load pages. It does have floppy disk support.

As Mr. Rieseberg suggests, if you were hoping to run Doom, you’re probably better off doing it through an actual virtualization app, but it surprisingly does work. He admits it only worked well “by accident and was mostly a joke.”

The app is only 129MB in size. Once it’s running it surprisingly only takes up around 200MB of RAM, even when running all the old Windows 95 system utilities, apps, and games. If you run into any issues with the app you can always reset the Windows 95 instance inside the app and start over again.

OK – Cut Windows 95 some slack, the 20something-year-old OS is the first step-up from 16-bit DOS to 32-bit Windows NT. But more importantly, it introduced the Windows graphical user interface that so many of us have a love/hate relationship with.

As you’d figure, running Windows 95 these days is mostly just for a laugh. Windows 95 is still popular after 20 years. The OS has appeared on the Apple Watch, Android Wear smartwatch, and even the Xbox One.

300 Billion Passwords

PasswordsThe death of the password has been predicted for years. Bill Gates predicted the death of the password at an RSA Security conference in 2004. In 2011, IBM (IBM) predicted that biometrics would replace passwords by 2016. In case you haven’t noticed in 2017 and passwords are still with us and they suck. “It’s now years after those statements were made, and passwords are still in heavy use,” Joseph Carson, head of global strategic alliances at Thycotic Software told CSO.

PasswordA new report (Reg. Req.) from cyber-security research firm Cybersecurity Ventures says that the number of passwords in use will grow from about 75 billion today to around 100 billion in 2020. AND the number of passwords used by machines, such as IoT devices, will grow even faster, from around 15 billion in 2015 to around 200 billion in 2020, the report said. That is 300 billion passwords by 2020.

And these numbers don’t include one-time passwords, SSL encryption keys, and other short-term credentials said Thycotic’s Carson. Thycotic Software sponsored the report.

Mr. Carson told CSO the estimates come from worldwide statistics about the total number of computers, operating systems, servers, routers, and other technologies and applications that come with passwords or need users to create passwords to use them. he added, “Then there are the social media accounts, which have been growing significantly.”

The average user has over 25 passwords, he said. There’s no decline in the number of passwords, in fact, the opposite is the case. “We find that the growth is accelerating at a massive pace,” CSO observed that the use — and reuse — of all these passwords is creating an ever-growing attack surface of both human and machine-to-machine passwords. A record number of credential breaches were disclosed in 2016, Mr. Carson added — 3 billion, with 43% of people having had at least one password or credential stolen.

A report released by the Pew Research Center said that for U.S. adults, the number was even higher. According to a 2016 survey, 64% said that they had personally noticed or been notified of a data breach that affected their accounts or personal data.

MoneyAccording to Mr. Carson, the financial damages of the breaches will continue to increase as well. Thycotic and Cybersecurity Ventures predicts potential damages from cyber-crime to reach $6 trillion by 2021.

Looks like passwords are here to stay. Followers of the Bach Seat know that passwords suck. I have covered a number of options to replace passwords. None of the biometric options have taken off as IBM had predicted.

Where biometric authentication is deployed, it’s been as an adjunct to passwords, not a replacement. Passwords are used to set up the initial trusted relationship, and as a fallback when the biometrics fail. Mr. Carson concludes, “The biometrics are used for ease of access to systems … Biometrics will never replace passwords.”
