Comcast to Unplug Motown

Comcast to Unplug MotownComcast (CMCSA) will abandon Detroit. The mega-cableco will abandon Detroit if the Federal Communications Commission approves its acquisition of Time Warner Cable Inc. The cable giant filed a response (PDF) to parties objecting to the nation’s second-largest provider’s plan to acquire TWC arguing against claims that it would grow too big under the merger.

Comcast logoUnder its purchase plan, Comcast will withdraw from some markets. It will continue to operate, as it does now, in 16 of 20 top markets. Comcast will operate in a different set of 16 markets, mostly on both coasts. Comcast lawyers stated, “Comcast will no longer have a presence in the Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, or Cleveland DMAs (designated market areas).

MLive explains that companies like Dish Network, Netflix, and various TV networks have complained that the Comcast-Time-Warner merger. They argue that the new cableco would create a massive cable company with an anti-competitive advantage. Religious television programmer My Christian TV complained that the deal. They claimed it would make Comcast, “the only significant cable outlet in about 98 percent of all African-American communities in the country.” Comcast’s response:

Comcast has never served several markets with significant African-American populations such as St. Louis, Cleveland, and New Orleans, among many others, and after the Transaction, will no longer serve Detroit… Comcast estimates that after the transaction, it will serve markets that include approximately 78 percent of the country’s Hispanic households (not counting Puerto Rico in the denominator), though of course many of those households will not be Comcast customers.

GreatLand Connections Inc.

Cutting the cableBloomberg says the castaways in Detroit, Minneapolis, and elsewhere would belong to a new company. The new company would be called GreatLand Connections Inc. It would be created in what the companies call a tax-efficient spinoff. The new company’s debt would exceed industry averages — something that has raised concerns about service in those communities.

We don’t have the answers we need,” said Ron Styka, an elected trustee with responsibility for cable-service oversight in Meridian Township, Michigan, a town served by Comcast about 80 miles west of Detroit. Municipal officials told Bloomberg they have questions about service. The questions include whether subscribers can keep Comcast e-mail addresses or if the cable-channel lineups may change.

Charter Cable logoGreatLand will start with $7.8 billion in debt, according to a securities filing. Bloomberg says that debt is equal to five times EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. The debt ratio for Comcast is 1.99 times EBITDA and for New York-based Time Warner Cable it’s 3.07 times EBITDA, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. David Osberg, city administrator of Eagan, MN told Bloomberg.  “It’s not clear whether GreatLand will be financially qualified,” to provide services.

The new company will buy management services from Charter Communications Inc. (CHTR) according to Bloomberg. Charter, which had sought to buy Time Warner Cable, would own a 33 percent interest in GreatLand and become the second-largest U.S. cable company with more than 8 million customers counting GreatLand’s and subscribers it gets in purchases and swaps with Comcast after the merger is completed.

I worked a couple of jobs last year with Comcast and it always took them 3 or 4 months to provide service to business customers so many Detroiters may not be sad to see the cable giant go. The Philadelphia company last week acknowledged major customer service woes after a series of viral videos documented the experiences of exasperated customers.

Comcast CEO Neil Smit announced the hiring of a new head of customer service, and wrote in a blog post:

It may take a few years before we can honestly say that a great customer experience is something we’re known for. But that is our goal and our number one priority.

Alien Super Channels Set Record

Alien Super Channels Set RecordResearchers have used alien technology to demo a broadband technology that can hit 1.4 terabits per second. That is enough to send 44 high-definition movies in just one second over the existing fiber network in London according to TechEye. A team from BT (BT) and Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) developed new infrastructure.

British Telecom logoThe BBC explained that the researchers used a new “flexigrid” infrastructure. Flexigrid created an “alien super channel.” The alien super channel was made of seven 200 Gbps channels, to vary the gaps between transmission channels. Increasing the channels’ density resulted in a 42.5% increase in the efficiency of data transmission compared with current networks.

Like adding more lanes of traffic

Kevin Drury, optical marketing leader at AlcaLu, told BBC news that the test was aimed at reducing space between lanes on a busy highway. He claims it is like adding more lanes of traffic to flow through the same path. He said that while wide lines can encompass heavy data transfers such as streaming video, narrow lanes would be assigned for low-data transfers such as standard web pages.

increase in the efficiency of data transmissionThe test was conducted on a 255-mile (410km) fiber link between the BT Tower in central London and BT’s Adastral Park research center in Suffolk. BT thinks it could help it to meet consumer and business demand for increased bandwidth.

Unfortunately, the mega-speed BT’s aliens developed is all backbone and core network stuff. It will not change the speeds we the people will get at home.

White Space Broadband in Michigan

Residents of tiny Vergennes, Michigan a small community east of Grand Rapids, is taking matters into their own hands to solve their lack of broadband. They’re using “white space” radios from Carlson Wireless, combined with lightly licensed 3.65 WiMax and cellular microcells reports Dailywireless.

MichiganRyan Peel, owner of Vergennes Broadband has been continuously frustrated with the lack of broadband access. Peel’s solution according to the article is to combine three different technologies to extend wireless broadband coverage in his community: WiMAX at 3.65 GHz; TV white space radios; and micro-cell mini-towers to extend cellular phone coverage as well. It’s currently being constructed.

“There’s going to be a hybrid network”, explains Peel. “The primary technology will be WiMAX using 3.65 GHz semi-licensed band. It’s going to use WiMAX radio technology with 6x diversity. But there are a significant number of people in the area that WiMAX cannot reach, because of the terrain and tree cover as is the nature of rural America”, Peel told the blog.

TV white spaceVergennes Broadband uses two 100+ foot towers, each with a WiMAX radio and a Carlson TV white space radio called the RuralConnect IP. The software-defined radio uses the slivers of VHF and UHF spectrum not used by television broadcasters Dailywireless says.

According to the article, Peel is adding supplemental value to the project by offering femtocells. Femtocells provide a local cellular connection and use broadband for the backhaul. It simply plugs into customers’ new Internet connection to work.

The plan seems like a kludge with a mix of three technologies. However, Comcast (CMCSA) and Charter are never going to do a build-out in rural areas. The Internet plans costs are

This was a problem that RUS Obama-money was supposed to address, but that has gone so well. Maybe Merit can do it.

Super-Fi OK’d by IEEE

Super-Fi OK'd by IEEEI usually don’t have a problem getting a wireless signal where in my Bach Seat. However, there are some areas where I coordinate technical services that don’t get wired or wireless Internet. In these rural areas, where AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), Sprint Nextel (S), and Comcast (CMCSA) and their fellow travelers fear to tread because they can’t make a buck in these areas, some help may be on the way from the IEEE.

IEEE logoIn 2009, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) started the development of IEEE standard 802.22, which addressed the need for broadband wireless access in rural areas, those where it is not economical to deploy a wired infrastructure. In July 2011, the IEEE announced that it has published the standard titled: “IEEE 802.22-2011 Standard for Wireless Regional Area Networks in TV Whitespaces” (PDF).

The IEEE press release states: “This new standard for Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRANs) takes advantage of the favorable transmission characteristics of the VHF and UHF TV bands to provide broadband wireless access over a large area up to 100 km (60 miles) from the transmitter. Each WRAN will deliver up to 22 Mbps per channel without interfering with reception of existing TV broadcast stations, using the so-called white spaces between the occupied TV channels.”That part of the spectrum, known as white spaces, sits between broadcast TV channels and will become available when broadcast TV stations switch from analog to digital in 2009.

VHF and UHF TV bands to provide broadband wireless accessThe White Space Coalition led by Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG), Dell (DELL), and other tech titans strongly support the use of the white spaces in the U.S., going up against strong opposition lead by Michigan’s own John Dingell and big media like the NFL, MLB, NASCAR, NBA, NHL, NCAA, PGA Tour and ESPN who say unlicensed devices in the TV bands would interfere with their signals.IEEE 802.22 reportedly will not interfere with TV broadcasts, because it incorporates advanced cognitive radio capabilities including:

I met Mr. Dingell about a dozen years ago, at a school to encourage the politician to support schools when the USF started the eRate program for schools. I recall Mr. Dingell telling me he could not support eRate because he did not trust the FCC to get it right. At least he is consistent.

I believe there is a very good chance this technology will never be a commercial success. The wireless carriers will squash this technology like they have squashed municipal wi-fi and community fiber networks. The improved speeds and coverage areas are a threat to their limited 4G coverage and they would lose out on their monthly pound of flesh capped rate-limited data plan.

It will be up to us in the public sector to implement this technology for our clients.

D-Light-ful LED Broadband

D-Light-ful LED BroadbandTEDGlobal has an intriguing presentation by Harald Haas who is developing a new type of light bulb that can access the Internet using light instead of radio waves. According to TEDGlobal, the professor of engineering at Edinburgh University, has been designing modulation techniques that pack more data onto existing networks, but his latest work leaps beyond wires and radio waves to transmit data via an LED bulb. The new technology will turn LED lights on and off, so fast the change is imperceptible to the human eye to enables broadband data transmission without any noticeable change in room lighting.

The system, which he calls D-Light, and hopes to commercialize under the new VLC (Visible Light Communications) brand uses OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing), The article reports the signal can be picked up by simple receivers. As of now, Haas is reporting data rates of up to 10 MBPS (faster than a typical broadband connection), and 100 MBPS by the end of this year and possibly up to 1 GB in the future.

Professor Haas says:

It should be so cheap that it’s everywhere. Using the visible light spectrum, which comes for free, you can piggy-back existing wireless services on the back of lighting equipment …As well as revolutionizing internet reception, it would put an end to the potentially harmful electromagnetic pollution emitted by wireless internet routers and has raised the prospect of ubiquitous wireless access, transmitted through streetlights.

So in 2008, Boston University under a National Science Foundation grant started this research to piggyback data communications capabilities on low-power LEDs to make an LED light the equivalent of a Wi-Fi access point.

Some of the advantages of this technology include:

  • Security: Since white light does not penetrate opaque surfaces such as walls, eavesdropping is not possible and should not extend beyond building perimeters like current Wi-Fi technology. It also requires line-of-sight which will allow the user to see where the data is going.
  • Green: The development of this new technology coincides with the switch from incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting to LEDs. LED lights consume far less energy than RF technology, making it possible to build a communication network without added energy costs and reducing carbon emissions over the long term.

One downside is that the technology seems to be a one-way (down) transmission.

Possible applications could include automotive safety by enabling car brake lights to alert the car behind or traffic signals could alert cars when they change. It could also have applications in indoor mobile location and positioning services.
