The Wireless Car Frontier

The Wireless Car FrontierNow that the mobile floodgates are open, developers, manufacturers, and platform operators are trying to design wireless cars. These devices will channel the next wave of mobile usage and innovation. Some are looking at wearable tech, such as Google‘s (GOOGGlass and the Pebbles Watch and as the natural progression of mobile technology. But computing platforms, including mobile operating systems, are also becoming ubiquitous in consumer electronics and appliances. The Business Insider writes that the greatest potential for mobile platforms and services could be cars.

Additionally, many of the activities people do in their cars, listen to music, look up directions, mesh nicely with popular activities on mobile. The author claims that Americans spend an average of 1.2 hours a day traveling between locations and American commuters spend an average of 38 hours a year stuck in traffic. If mobile apps and Internet-based services can shoehorn their way into the in-car environment, that means a great opportunity to expand their ability to engage consumers, absorb their attention, and gather data.

The BI explains that there is already a sizable and growing mobile market in the car. Five years from now, there will be over 60 million connected cars on the road globally, according to estimates from the GSMA and others. Car-focused telecom, hardware, and software services will drive some $51 billion in annual revenue by 2018. Pandora, for example, is now being used in 2.5 million cars and 100 car models through one of its 23 partnerships with auto brands and eight partnerships with stereo manufacturers. BI identified three ways in which mobile products and services can be integrated into cars.

However, the mobile device drives all key facets of the app, including Internet access, and the car simply provides some tools to facilitate it (i.e., dashboard user interface, voice controls, speakers, jacks, and/or steering wheel-based controls). Currently, many in-dash automobile app suites in cars are nothing more than an interface that provides control over a Bluetooth or audio jack-connected smartphone.

Tethering

The connection is provided through external means, but the computing and delivery of the services happen in the car. For example, a Bluetooth or USB connection might link a car’s navigation system to your phone-stored contact list, and from that moment forward a simple press of a button in the car would guide you to a friend’s house from any location. In this scenario, the car depends on the external device to gather Internet-based data.

Connection and intelligence are baked into the car. The car houses the operating system, apps, and other services that will deliver Internet-based mobile services to the user. A mobile device might sync with whatever is in the car, but external mobile gadgets aren’t essential to running car-based apps. GM is moving in this direction with its new fleet of 4G cars. (rb- I covered the evolution of 4G here) Means of integration can be blended, and often are. (rb- I wrote about Microsoft’s move into cars back in 2011, here.)

iOS in the Car

Emily Price at Mashable reports that Apple (AAPL) jumped into the mobile products and services integration game. Ms. Price reports that the folks from Cupertino have received a USPTO patent for a touchscreen car dashboard. If Apple carries through with their patent, it would replace most of your car’s existing instrumentation. The new dashboard would make your vehicle’s controls digital, letting you control everything from the temperature in your car to the radio station using a touchscreen.

OS in the CarThe article claims “iOS in the Car” should be released in 2014. Cars that support the service will allow your iPhone 5 to connect to your car’s in-dash system make phone calls, send and receive messages access your music, and get directions. Siri support will also let you do all of those things hands and eyes-free.

The blog reports that “Siri Eyes Free” is available in General Motors‘s (GMChevy Spark and Sonic via the Chevrolet MyLink system. According to reports sometime in 2014 Apple iOS will be available in 15 more car brands including:

Detroit moile cityI covered Ford (F) Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. plan to re-position Detroit as the “Silicon Valley of Mobility.” Hopefully, AAPL has figured out how to multi-thread iOS. I gave up my iPhone because it could not mult-thread. Every time I went to answer a call, I got 5 or 10 email pop’s that I had to deal with before I could answer the call. This kind of behavior could be catastrophic in a car.

What if you need to do two things at the same time, like shift from forward to reverse and turn on the air conditioning.

Then there is the privacy issue. Will AAPL give all the data they collect to the NSA or your insurance company?

Detroit Tech City

Detroit Tech CityDetroit has become the only two-time winner on the top five list of fastest-growing tech cities, says Dice.Com. According to MiTechNews, Detroit was No. 5 on the Dice list this year, with year-to-year growth of 10 percent in tech job listings. The Motor City was No. 1 on Dice’s list in 2011.

Back in 2011, Dice said Detroit had more than 800 tech jobs posted on any given day; now it’s more than 1,100. Automation Alley ranked the greater Detroit region among the best for its strong record of students completing science, technology, engineering, and math degrees.

The article says that annual salaries for Detroit-based tech pros are rising at above-average rates, up 7 percent from last year to $76,515 on average.

Dice says St. Louis, Mo. was No. 1 on this year’s Dice survey at 25 percent year-over-year growth in tech job listings, followed by:

“Detroit is a great place to be, and that’s what’s driving it,” said Dice.com senior vice president Tom Silver. “I think what’s contributing to it is a growth in opportunity as well as a pretty good cost of living. Increasingly, people are moving from more traditional tech centers like the Valley and NYC where it’s really expensive, to cities like Detroit, which are a great place to live.”

Employers are also discovering a “rich pool of talent” in cities like Detroit too — that they can get for more reasonable salaries, given the lower local cost of living.

Dice noted that Quicken Loans, Domino’s Pizza (DPZ) and New World Systems are high-profile Motown-based companies with listings on Dice.com.

Open Source Wireless for Detroit

Open Source Wireless for DetroitDetroit is the proving grounds for a new open source wireless network technology called Commotion. According to FierceWireless, Commotion is a new wireless mesh-networking platform being deployed across Detroit by the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute (OTI).

DetroitThe OTI has completed the first phase of construction of the wireless testbed in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, where Commotion connects low-income apartment buildings, community centers, churches, and businesses. FierceWireless says the prototype open-source network allows neighbors to communicate with one another and can potentially distribute Internet access to local residents, the group says. “The Detroit wireless network … will put control of the Internet into the hands of its users,” said OTI Director Sascha Meinrath. “The partners OTI works with in Detroit are not only self-provisioning connectivity for local residents, they’re proofing out technologies that support free, safe, ubiquitous communications around the globe.”

put control of the Internet into the hands of its usersStacey Higginbotham at GigaOM reports the new stack has technologies such as Serval, which would enable the handsets to recognize the Commotion network, Tor, a program that can hide where a user is coming from and OpenBTS, an open source base station that runs software that can interface between VoIP networks and GSM radios.

The OTI release on the news notes that more than half of Detroit residents do not have Internet service at home due to the cost of service and a lack of investment in infrastructure by Internet service corporations.

GigaOM also notes that the public release of Commotion follows a funding round for a company called Open Garden, which is pursuing a similar mesh network creation software. Meanwhile, Range Networks has been formed to support the OpenBTS standard and deliver a “network in a box” that runs the OpenBTS software and allows users to make voice calls anywhere in the world.

According to the OTI press release, the U.S. Department of State is funding the Detroit Commotion project to test the potential of the technology in third world places like Egypt or Syria or Detroit.

Detroit Leader in Identity Fraud Rings

Detroit Leader in Identity Fraud RingsMotown has a new not-so-good title. ID AnalyticsID:A Labs has identified the metro Detroit area as one of the top areas for identity fraud. According to their research, there are over 10,000 identity fraud rings in the U.S., and the three-digit ZIP codes with the most fraud rings are around Washington DC; Tampa, FL.; Greenville, MS; Macon, GA; Detroit; and Montgomery, AL.

DetroitThe credit rating bureau says an identity fraud ring is a group of people actively collaborating to commit identity fraud. Help Net Security reports this study is the first to investigate the interconnections of identity manipulators and fraudsters to identify rings of criminals working in collaboration.

While many of these fraud rings involve two or more career criminals, surprisingly, others are family members or groups of friends. The article says that ring members operate by either stealing victims’ identities or improperly sharing and manipulating personal identifying information such as dates-of-birth (DOB) and Social Security numbers (SSNs) on applications for credit and services.

Other findings of the study include:

  • States with the highest numbers of fraud rings include Alabama, the Carolinas, Delaware, Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas.
  • While many fraud rings occur in cities, a surprisingly high number were also found in rural areas of the country.
  • A large number of families are working together in fraud rings, even using each other’s SSNs and DOBs. However, rings made up of friends are more common, with the majority of fraud rings made up of members with different last names.

“In this latest research, we have taken a broader approach, looking at connections among bad people rather than studying individual activity,” Dr. Stephen Coggeshall, chief technology officer of ID Analytics said in the post. “This information enables us to build new variables into our fraud models so we can help our customers to make better decisions and improve protection for consumers.

ID:A Labs looked at about 1.7 billion identity risk events including applications for credit cards, wireless phones, payday loans, utilities, and other financial services credit products. It also examined changes in personal identifying information among accounts such as changes in name, address, DOB, and SSN to identity over 10,000 fraud rings in the United States.
