Michigan Leader In Tech JobsThe latest CyberStates report from CompTia ranks Michigan 3rd nationally when it comes to growing tech jobs. According to the report (PDF), Michigan added 13,160 new tech jobs during 2017. Michigan ranks 9th overall in net tech employment.

The 404,300 tech workers in CompTIA CyberState reportMichigan include tech industry workers in technical and non-technical positions, technical workers in other industries, and self-employed tech workers according to CompTia. In addition to added jobs, the Cyberstates report shows Michigan’s tech sector is responsible for an estimated $34.7 billion of the overall state economy.

The CompTIA report also ranked Metro Detroit 11th for increases in tech employment with 8,700 new tech jobs in 2017. Metro Detroit out-paced, traditional tech hot-spots like Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, and LA in tech job growth. The top CyberCities by net tech employment job gains were:

5. Detroit +8,700
6. Dallas +7,400
7. Boston +7,100
8. Los Angeles +5,700

The Cyberstate report also found there was a 43.4% increase in the number of job postings related to emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, drones, artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual reality, and augmented reality and blockchain.

Michigan’s leading tech occupations include software and web developers, computer support specialists, and computer system and information security analysts.

Michigan Adds Over 10,700 Tech Jobs in 2016Michigan’s technology industry employment grew by an estimated 5.1% in 2016, the MichiganTech News reports. The good news comes from the annual Cyberstates 2017 report from CompTIA. The technology association found that Michigan employers added more than 10,700 new tech jobs in 2016.

Michigan ranks 10th for tech industry employmentThe survey also found that Michigan ranks 10th among the 50 states for tech industry employment with an estimated 221,994 workers. Michigan was in the top five states for 2016 tech industry job growth on a percentage change basis.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Michigan – the second part of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 271,900 in 2016. The tech sector accounts for an estimated 6.6 percent of the overall Michigan economy. The tech industry employs an estimated 5.3 percent of the overall state workforce. Leading tech occupations state-wide include:

  • Mechanical engineers (42,610),
  • Industrial engineers (25,500) and
  • Computer user support specialists (20,130).

The annualized average wage for a Michigan tech industry worker was an estimated $89,200 in 2016, 77% higher than the average state wage ($50,400). Michigan ranks 21st nationally in average tech industry wages.

Other Key Findings

Michigan is home to an estimated 11,223 tech business establishments. The Detroit metropolitan area is home to more than one-third of these businesses (4,174).

The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of:

  • Engineering services (+ 8.3%)
  • R&D and testing labs (+ 5.4%) and
  • Computer systems design and IT services (+ 5.1%).

Employers posted more than 28,600 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.

“The Cyberstates data affirms the strength and vitality of Michigan’s tech industry, and attests to its essential standing in the economy,” Todd Thibodeaux, president, and CEO of, CompTIA said in a presser. “Technology enables innovation and generates growth for companies, regardless of their size, locale or markets served.”

More Motown JobsGood news – more jobs! Metro Detroit employment has finally recovered from the 2007 depression recession. The second quarter of 2016 set a new high in employment in Southeast Michigan dating back nearly a decade to 2007 to the beginning of the recession, reports the Workforce Intelligence Network for Southeast Michigan.

MiTechNews reports that 35,000 jobs were added from April through June, pushing the total number of jobs held in the region to 2.62 million.  Nearly 20,000 previously unemployed people gained jobs in the region in the second quarter of 2016, along with more than 15,000 new workers (for a total of 35,000 new jobs), bringing the unemployment rate down to 4.5 percent, a low not experienced in Southeast Michigan since 2001.

Detroit Still HotDetroit’s job market is good despite what the orange one says. Statista reports data from the New York Times, Detroit has posted a 27.2% increase in technology jobs between 2010 and 2015. I have written about the strength of the metro Detroit tech job sector as far back as 2011 here, here, and here.Areas with the greatest increase in technology jobs (2010-2015).This rate of job growth places Motown 8th nationally in tech job creation over the past five years. The Motor City came in only .01% behind Boston and out-performed cities like Atlanta (22.6%) and Chicago (18.7%) in creating tech jobs.

DetroitNot only is the Detroit tech sector a national leader, according to Crain’s Detroit, but Detroit is also a job-seekers market. The article says manufacturers are struggling to find entry-level employees and are being forced to raise wages to find talent.

The average advertised salary for local workers with zero to two years of experience has risen more than 16.5% to $52,729 in 2015 from $45,256 in 2011, according to an analysis by the Workforce Intelligence Network for Southeast Michigan. For workers with three to eight years of experience, that average has increased 13%; and for those with nine-plus years of work experience, it increased only 0.5 percent.

This can be traced to the rejuvenated Upwardauto industry, which is increasingly dependent on high-tech skills. Manufacturing is an increasingly prodigious driver of tech jobs; games and dot-coms are not the only paths to technical employment growth.

Non-Compete Clauses Hurt Worker ProductivityJeff John Roberts at GigaOM writes about research published in Harvard Business Review that says non-compete clauses, which limit workers’ ability to move from one firm to another, may do more harm than good. The research suggests that workers are less motivated and perform worse when subjected to terms that limit their job mobility.

Job searchThe study paid online participants to search matrices for numbers that add up to ten. The article explains that a sub-group of people subjected to a mock non-compete clause, 61 percent decided to drop out and forgo the money compared to 41 percent in a control group. The non-compete group also performed much worse at the task, making mistakes at twice the rate as the others. According to the authors of the study:

We believe that limits on future employment not only dim workers’ external prospects but also decrease their perceived ownership of their jobs, sapping their desire to exert themselves and develop their skills. The resulting drop in performance may be more damaging to companies than the actual loss of the employees would be.

subject to non-complete clauses.Mr. Roberts concludes that the findings could carry big implications for the American workforce, where more than half of engineers and 70 percent of executives are reportedly subject to non-compete clauses.

The study authors also say that existing research shows higher levels of innovation and productivity in regions that outlaw limits on worker mobility.

Silicon Valley and California stand out in this area. Courts there have explicitly banned non-compete clauses on public policy grounds, a situation that makes it easy for companies to poach each others’ employees.

I’m not a lawyer, so get your own legal counsel, but I can google and it seems that enforcing or challenging the enforceability of a non-compete agreement under Michigan law invariably boils down to four issues:

  1. Do the non-compete clauses protect a legitimate business interest?
  2. Is the duration reasonable?
  3. Is the geographical restriction reasonable?
  4. Is the type of employment or line of work restriction reasonable?
