MSFT Closing More Windows SupportIT departments organizations are busy keeping up with XP replacements, Cloud migrations, BYOD implementations and now Microsoft has reminded everybody that there are other fires burning on the horizon. Microsoft (MSFT) is warning that they are ending mainstream support for more popular Windows products. Some of the key products ending mainstream support include; Windows 7, Window Server 2008, Exchange 2010, and SharePoint 2010.

So what does Redmond mean when it ends “Mainstream Support”?

  • Microsoft supportMainstream support is the typically five-year period when Microsoft provides free patches and fixes, including but not limited to security updates, for its products.
  • When a product exits the mainstream support phase, Microsoft continues to provide a period (also often five years) of extended support, which means users get free security fixes but other types of updates are paid and require specific licensing deals.
  • “End of support” means there will be no more fixes or patches — paid or free, security or non-security — coming for specific products. CNET says there are some temporary workarounds, as Windows XP users have discovered, but as a general rule, end of support means, for most intents and purposes, the end.

September 14, 2014 mainstream support ends Windows Phone 7.8.

October 14, 2014, is a critical date, support ends for

  • Office 2010 (Including Viso and Project) with Service Pack 1 mainstream support ends.
  • SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 mainstream support ends

  • Windows 7, Mainstream, free support ends on for all versions of  Windows 7 (Enterprise, Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, and Starter) as well as Windows 7 SP1.
  • Extended support for Windows 7 lasts until January 14, 2020, so users can expect to continue to receive free security updates, but not feature updates, for Windows 7 until that point.
  • Some industry watchers have speculated that Microsoft will end up pushing out Windows 7’s support dates the way the company did for XP, given Windows 7’s popularity and pervasiveness, but so far, CNET says there is no evidence of it happening.
  • Windows Server 2008 – Mainstream support also ends on all versions of Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. Extended support remains in place until 2020.
  • Exchange 2010 – Mainstream support will also end on all versions of Exchange 2010. Extended support remains in place until 2020.
  • Other Microsoft products whose mainstream support ends on January 13, 2015 include :
    • All editions of Windows Storage Server 2008,
    • Dynamics C5 2010,
    • NAV 2009 and NAV 2009 R2
    • Forefront Unified Access Gateway 2010 with SP3
    • Visual Studio 2012
  • Microsoft recommends its customers to get updated, “Customers should migrate to the next available Service Pack to continue to receive security updates and be eligible for other support options.”

extended support cuts offJuly 14, 2015, Microsoft’s extended support period for Server 2003 cuts off (I covered the end of 2003 here). MSFT won’t be issuing patches, updates, or fixes of any kind for that operating system (unless users have pricey Custom Support Agreements in place). Redmond is hoping to move 2003 hold-outs to Windows Server 2012 R2 and/or Azure.

October 13, 2015, is another big deal day

  • Office 2010, Visio 2010, Project 2010 — Mainstream Support ends. Extended support should run into 2020.
  • SharePoint Server 2010 — Mainstream support ends. Extended support should run into 2020.

April 11, 2017 – Extended Support ends for Windows Vista ends. No more updates. Time to upgrade (rb- if you haven’t already moved on).

August 11, 2017 – Extended Support ends for Exchange Server 2007. No more updates. Time to upgrade.

January 10, 2018, Mainstream support for Windows 8.1 ends for all versions of Windows 8. Customers still running Windows 8 have until January 12, 2016, to update to Windows 8.1 in order to stay supported.

Remember this – running out-of-date software which no longer receives security updates is playing into the hands of online criminals and hackers.

IT Departments Gone in 5 YearsIT departments will be done in the enterprise within the next five years according to a group of CEOs and VPs. They predict that consumerization of IT and self-service trends will lead to a restructuring of today’s IT shop, leaving behind a hybrid model consisting of tech consultants and integrators. Brandon Porco, chief technologist & solutions architect at Northrop Grumman recently told a group at the CITE Conference and Expo.

IT Departments are targetsComputerworld reports that Kathleen Schaub, VP of research firm IDCs CMO Advisory Practice, echoed Mr. Porco. She said many corporate IT organizations now report to the head of the business unit it is assigned to. “The premise is that wherever IT sits in an organization will dictate what they care about,” she said. “If they’re in finance, they’ll care about cost-cutting. If they’re in operations, they’ll care about process management. If [the company] decides it wants to focus on the customer, they’ll put it in marketing.

John Mancini, CEO of the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM), agreed with Mr. Porco, saying that in the consumer technology era, it’s the business side that has all the tools, so it will be able to trump IT’s desire to control who uses what and how.

Nathan McBride, VP of IT & chief cloud architect at AMAG Pharmaceuticals told Computerworld, “We’re not trying to be ahead of the technology curve and we don’t’ want to be behind, but we’re trying to maintain pace to know what they’re going to ask for next before they ask for it.

Help Net Security points out a recent IDC study that found 61% of enterprise technology projects are now funded by the business and not the IT department. IDC says IT spending driven by the functional business areas will outpace IT’s own spending. Today’s business executives who are more tech-savvy, have easier access to technology through the Cloud, and are under pressure to quickly implement new technology initiatives are driving this change.  The Help Net Security article states that today’s line of business employees are looking more and more like an extension of the IT department as, on average, 8% are technical staff.

Center of the universeAnother concern raised is whether IT is losing control as consumer technology becomes part and parcel of everyone’s work in the enterprise, and the data center is left behind. AMAG’s McBride told the audience, that in five years, companies will have to make sure they’re matching their enabling technology to the demographic of that time. He said 75 Fortune 100 companies now use Google (GOOG) Apps along with most Ivy League schools, meaning that the next generation of workers won’t be users of Microsoft (MSFT) Exchange or Office.

While the CIO position will likely stay in an enterprise, his or her role will morph into a technology forecaster and strategist, and not a technology implementer, according to Northrop Grumman’s Porco.

This sounds like a solid case for training technical staff in project principles and increasing the number of IT project managers. There have to be clear two-way communications between the business owner and the implementers.

Requirments ?Proper and detailed scope definition is one of the most critical steps for the success of any project. The business team, implementation team, and operations team must get together before the work starts to check the proposed solution and work through all the questions, concerns, and gotchas before the project even starts. This way problems can be discovered. Once the requirements are defined and the scope is complete and everyone agrees, then the project can be signed off and a formal kick-off meeting can be held.

In IT projects, it is important to look beyond the defined project to ensure success. Does the plan consider impacts on end-users?

  • Does the project need new policies or procedures? If something falls through the cracks, they blame your project.
  • Does the PC fleet meet requirements? Do they need more RAM? If they have to upgrade, they blame your project.
  • Does it work with your current server OS? If they have to upgrade, they blame your project.
  • What about the software? Are you locked into IE only? Do you need a specific level of .NET? Does it work on iOS and Android? If they don’t have the right software, they blame your project.
  • How much bandwidth does the new project require? Will it try to send a graphical interface to a remote office on a slow link? If it loads slow they blame your project.
  • Training? If the end-users can work the program, they blame your project.

Microsoft Struggles – Exchange Next Cash Cow?

Microsoft Struggles - Exchange Next Cash Cow?The Royal Pingdom reports that Microsoft’s Windows 7 has just overtaken Windows XP as the top operating system in the US. The article cites stats from StatCounter that say as of April 7, Microsoft Windows 7 reached a 31.71% of share, while Windows XP held a 31.56% share.

On a global scale, StatCounter reports that Windows XP still enjoys a significant advantage of 16.1% over Windows 7.Windows 7 takes the lead

The Business Insider noted that investor Roger McNamee a man who Bill Gates credited as a sounding board for his 1994 book “The Road Ahead” told CNBC that Microsoft’s Windows is a dying business.

I think Microsoft Windows, this is the cycle where it stops growing… The availability of iPads and smartphones is allowing corporations to trade down and eliminate the thousand dollars per year of supporting a Windows desktop. And this is the year where Windows has fallen below 50% of internet connected device down from 97% a few years ago.

Despite this, Mr. McNamee would still buy Microsoft (MSFT) because of the company’s strong position in an email.

When you’re a monopolist in an important category — and they are for sure a monopolist relative to email with Exchange — they’re going to be able to crank prices on Exchange. I actually think Microsoft is a buy.

Mr. McNamee is a smart guy who took an early huge stake in Facebook for Elevation Partners. However, the Business Insider thinks that Exchange as a replacement for the Microsoft Windows business is bizarre for a bunch of reasons:

  • Market share. Exchange Server has the majority market share — most estimates put it above 70% and higher in larger enterprises. But it doesn’t have the 90%+ share that Microsoft has enjoyed with Windows for the last 20-plus years.
  • Sales. Windows had about $18 billion in sales last year. The last time Microsoft revealed Exchange numbers was FY’07 when it had sales of $1.5 billion projecting forward, Exchange would have had $2.8 billion in sales in FY’10.
  • Margins. Windows has one of the greatest operating margins of any legal business in history – up to 80%. Exchange sells in lower volumes, faces more competition, and requires longer and more personalized sales cycles, which almost certainly means it’s got lower margins.
  • Competition. Older messaging systems like Lotus are slowly dying, but Exchange faces serious price pressure from Web-based email providers, particularly Google’s Gmail. Microsoft has responded with Exchange Online, its own hosted service, but it’s already had to lower prices on the service once.
  • Strategy. Windows pulls through sales of Office and other desktop software, which in turn pulls through sales of business servers (including Exchange). Its ubiquity helps Microsoft sell Windows Server and other enterprise software. Its huge margins allow Microsoft to pour money into projects like search and Xbox, which pressure the competition.
  • If Windows dies, Microsoft will have to do a lot more than monopolize email to replace it.

Microsoft has had a long struggle to get Windows XP out of the enterprise, and with PC sales dipping the MSFT recovery will be harder thanks to the rise of the iPad. I would rather put my money on the Ballmer Boys to stage a spectacular comeback with Windows Phone Windows 8 than to turn Exchange into a cash cow like Windows.
