Super-Sized Storage Saves Tape

Super-Sized Storage Save TapeThe LTO Program Technology Provider Companies (TPCs) recently announced the extension of the LTO tape product to generations 9 and 10. SearchStorage says that Linear Tape-Open (LTO) is an open-format tape storage technology. LTO was developed by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), International Business Machines (IBM), and Certance. (Quantum (QMCO) acquired Centance in 2004). The term “open-format” means that users have access to multiple sources of storage media products that will be compatible and save tape backups from being replaced.

LTO Tape Backups

SearchStorage reports that the LTO tape vendors plan to grow the technology to super-size. LTO-9 will offer up to 25 TB of native capacity and LTO-10 will offer 48 TB. Transfer rates will increase over earlier generations. LTO-9 and LTO-10 will offer transfer rates of 708 MBps and 1,100 MBps, respectively make tape backups faster.

LTO Roadmap

The new generations will allow your to keep your existing tape backups. The new LTO will include read-and-write backwards compatibility with tapes from the previous generation. It also has read compatibility from the previous two generations. The new generations will also continue to support LTFS, WORM functionality and encryption.

Another super sized storage option

In case you are not a LTO user, FierceCIO reports that Sony (SNE) has developed super-sized storage tape. The Sony magnetic tape cassette capable of storing 185TB of data by optimizing its nano-technology process.

Tape messSony optimized its “sputter deposition” technology to create a soft magnetic layer, allowing it to shrink magnetic particles,  on the storage layer to an average size of 7.7nm, and increasing density according to the article. This allows the Japanese firm’s forthcoming cassettes will be able to store 74 times more data than conventional tape media or the equivalent of 3,700 Blu-ray discs.

The creation of a 185TB cassette will no doubt be welcomed by large enterprises as they try not to be overwhelmed by the explosion in big data. Various studies estimate that in the next decade the amount of data stored will increase by 50 times. IDC predicts in 2020, over 40 trillion gigabytes of data will be stored around the globe.

Not so fast, these developments are not the holy grail of backup’s.

LibraryI know of several organizations that have dragged their fiscal feet and are still running LTO-1 or LTO-2.  They have limited their own upgrade path. Right there in the LTO.org spec’s it says that LTO only allows for support of the previous two generations of cartridges on LTO Tape Drives.

FierceCIO speculates that after cost, Sony’s biggest challenge with a 185TB tape will be making it sufficiently fast in terms of its read and write performance, and the possible need for non-conventional peripheral interconnects so that data backups can be completed within increasingly decreasing backup windows.

Projector Lamp Risks

Projector Lamp RisksI have done over a dozen audio-video projects in my career. One of the constant complaints I would get from Owners were about projector lamps. The Owners would inevitably complain about the sticker shock for replacement bulbs. Despite the fact, I recommended a mass purchase of replacement bulbs as part of the project. A bulk buy of 50 to 100 lamps would have saved a lot of money. Nobody wants to spend that money upfront. It’s easier to push the costs off of the capital budget into OPEX. It is somebody else’s budget.

Grey-market protector bulbs

This penny-foolish procrastination could end up costing organizations a great deal more. When a department is required to purchase its own consumable goods, they often buy the cheapest goods they can find and the results can be tragic. A recent example comes from Scotland. Back in May 2014, the 175-year-old Glasgow School of Art (GSA) Charles Rennie Mackintosh building caught fire. The blaze inside the historic building is believed to have started when a projector exploded in its basement according to the MailOnline.

Luckily there were no reports of serious injuries. If it turns out to be an exploding projector, the cause could have been a grey-market bulb. Grey-market goods are often sold on dodgy websites as original equipment. They are cheaper and are often packaged in convincing counterfeited packing. Monoprice had this same problem a while ago (which I reported on here).

In order to educate yourself, and protect your clients, projector bulb reseller – JustLamps.net –  published a website – Counterfeitlamps.com – which provides some pointers on how to recognize counterfeit lamps and what to do if you get one (or twenty).

Clean out the projector filters

TClimb the ladderhe second step to protect the installation is to service the projector. Everybody hates to climb the ladder and clean out the filters, but it’s got to be done. It increases the life of the lamp, so you save money by increasing the lamp life which reduces the risk of buying a counterfeit lamp and possibly burning down a building.

Protect your equipment (and buildings) by replacing projector lamps before they exceed their rated hours. Do not keep using it until it stops working. It could get ugly.

There are opportunities in here, many mid-high quality projectors will now generate alerts when it exceeds a number of hours. Maybe you can be the on the ladders cleaning the filters for them.

BYOD Obsoletes PBX

BYOD Obsoletes PBXFierceMobileIT noted a new study from RingCentral, a provider of cloud business communications systems, which claims BYOD is now threatening the traditional business phone systems. The survey of 309 professionals within organizations who make purchasing decisions on phone systems found that personal mobile devices are so prevalent in the workplace that they are rendering traditional business phone systems obsolete.

  • Half of the respondents use mobile phones even while sitting at their desk, with a traditional desk phone in front of them
  • 88 percent of employees use their mobile phones for work purposes while on personal time, including evenings, breaks, weekends, and vacations
  • 70 percent of respondents believe office phones will eventually be replaced by mobile phones – Millennial workers are especially likely to believe this is true

RingCentral President David Berman told the author he believes that the new wave of employee-owned mobile devices is better than a premise-based phone system.

Mobile devices are turning into true business tools and are transforming the workplace as a whole, from shifting traditional business hours to changing how employees interact via voice, video, text and other business applications. We believe that all these changes are making legacy on-premise phone systems obsolete as they do not meet modern business needs

Praful Shah, RingCentral’s VP of strategy, told FierceMobileIT that his firm has seen a “tremendous behavior change going on with BYOD.” Asked what stood out in the research to him, he says it was the degree to which employees are using their personal devices to do work. He assumed the practice to be popular, but not to the degree the survey revealed. VP Shah noted;

Eighty-eight percent of employees are using mobile phones in their personal time for work. That is a phenomenally high percentage

The result is a shift in what physical telephones organizations will need to purchase. But it will also impact the need to provide applications that enable the employee to use multiple email and telephone accounts on the device, to keep private life and professional life separate when necessary.

This study is from a firm that sells a competitive product to on-premise PBX, so they are spreading FUD for their benefit. Firms considering cloud-based services should do due diligence and question how these cloud-based service providers are going to protect their data from government spying or it disappearing with little or no notice.

Additionally firm needs to protect its own data. They need a way to protect their data on an employee’s phone. That could include the ability to completely wipe the firms and the user’s data from the phone.  I wrote about how BYOD can land an employee in jail here.

I always try to get my customers to drop Inkjet printers from their fleet. Many times it seems like a hopeless battleConsumers Reports says that InkJet ink can cost up to $75.00 a gallon. They recommend Brother printers as the most efficient inkjet printers. Sorry HP.
