Hot Wheels Roll into NFT

Hot Wheels Roll into NFTMattel (MAT) has joined the cryptocurrency craze. The toymaker will offer three pieces of digital art in the form of nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, for auction on its Mattel Creations website. The digital art sale will feature several iconic Hot Wheels vehicles in the Hot Wheels NFT Garage Series. The one-of-a-kind works will feature classic cars in their original colors from the initial release:

  • The Twin Mill was designed in 1968 as a sleek racer with twin big-block engines.
  • Bone Shaker NFTThe Bone Shaker is a hot-rod-style machine with a skull and bones theme.
  • Finally, the Deroa II represents one of the original 16 cars Mattel released. The model has a bubble windshield, an engine in the back, and a pair of surfboards.

The virtual cars will be auctioned off, beginning on June 22, 2021, at noon Eastern. The auction will run for a week. Mattel is only accepting the cryptocurrency Ethereum (ETH). Bidding starts at $0.99. With only one NFT of each car being created, prices could soar.

Mattel planning more NFT collections

NFT auctionsMattel has stated that it was already in the planning stages to release similar NFT auctions for other intellectual properties. CEO Richard Dickson stated that the Hot Wheels NFT move is part of Mattel’s effort to remain relevant by evolving toys into digital art. “Part of our effort to make Mattel relevant is to make sure that our brands are timeless and timely … We need to be on top of current conversations.”

Some examples of brands owned by Mattel that could release NFTs include:

  • American Girl,
  • Barbie,
  • Fisher-Price,
  • Masters of the Universe, and
  • Matchbox.

What is an NFT

What is an NFTNFTs are non-fungible tokens. An NFT is a piece of digital content that you own that still retains the creator’s information. For instance, artists can sign their artwork by including their signature in an NFT’s metadata. The creator’s information is maintained in the blockchain. Unlike bitcoin (BTC), which also uses a blockchain, you can’t trade an NFTs for a pizza, because the NFT is not fungible. Fungibility is the ability to substitute one unit of a financial instrument for another unit of the same financial instrument. Every dollar or bitcoin has the same value at the same time.

Each NFT is attached to a specific digital asset i.e. a piece of art, or a picture of a Hot Wheels car. An NFT is a unique, digital version of a certificate of authenticity, publicly approved by the blockchain and not money. NFTs have become popular in the art world because they allow artists to have more control over their works by selling limited-edition digital goods directly to consumers.

Sell directly to the consumer as an NFTForbes explains that Blockchain technology and NFTs offer content creators a unique opportunity to monetize their wares. For example, artists no longer have to rely on galleries or auction houses to sell their art. Instead, the artist can sell it directly to the consumer as an NFT, which also lets them keep more of the profits. In addition, artists can program in royalties so they’ll receive a percentage of sales whenever their art is sold to a new owner. This is an attractive feature as artists generally do not receive future proceeds after their art is first sold.

NFTs environmental impact

NFTs environmental impact Then there is the environmental impact of NFTs, which has attracted real scrutiny. The computing power required to operate the underlying blockchain system of NFTs is immense. By some estimates, one crypto transaction could gobble up more power than the average U.S. household uses in a single day. One artist estimated that generating six NFT pieces consumed more electricity than his entire physical studio did in two years.

Ford Rolls Out A Hot Wheels Transit

Ford Rolls Out A Hot Wheels TransitTheDetroitBureau.com reports from SEMA 2013 in Las Vegas that Ford Motor Company (F) has rolled out some very hot wheels. Ford is the latest carmaker to honor Hot Wheels the popular Mattel (MAT) toy line with a running, life-size model. This one based on the latest Ford Transit Connect van.

The Hot Wheels design team jumped at the chance to hot rod a Transit Connect van. The idea was to create a race-inspired support vehicle for the average guy to spend a weekend at the track testing his Hot Wheels race car,” said Felix Holst, vice president of creative for the Mattel Wheels Division.

It’s no surprise Ford came up with the flashy version of its all-new 2014 Transit Connect. The Hot Wheels brand has been around since 1968. Kids – as well as many adult fans – have snapped up 4 billion of the line’s model cars since then.

The Hot Wheels Transit Connect is more than just a van with a flashy paint job and decals.  It is powered by Ford’s 2.5-liter 2.5-liter Ti-VCT four-pot. The sliding side doors are replaced by gull-wing doors. The rear wheels are widened with the body panels flared out to accommodate the larger wheels.  There are three shark fins on the back of the roof and scoops on the hood. To complete the package, there are three widescreen TV sets inside the author reports.

It has everything you need to spend a weekend at the track,” suggested Mr. Holst. The blog says he didn’t say whether that meant the race track or the little orange plastic tracks that Hot Wheels cars run on.

There’s no word on whether Ford plans to offer any of the modifications made for the Hot Wheels Transit Connect concept, though the use of gullwing doors in a production vehicle seems unlikely speculates TheDetroitBureau.com.

That said, Chevrolet debuted its homage to Hot Wheels at the 2012 SEMA Show. last year. Chevy displayed the Hot Wheels Camaro at the 2013 Woodward Dream Cruise and sold it as a limited-edition Hot Wheels Camaro.

Social Media Going to the Dogs

Updated 11/30/2011 – The BusinessInsider called Puppy Tweets one of the 10 Stupid Gadgets That We Can’t Believe Exist. Sometimes BI needs to lighten up.

Social Media Going to the DogsIn 1993, the New Yorker declared, “On the Internet, no one knows you are a dog.” Now your dog can be on social media. Toymaker Mattel (MAT) has developed a way for your pooch to have his own site on Twitter. Fido can now send you the usual 140 characters tweets. These messages are reportedly the same brief comments about his doggies activities that humans post on social media network Twitter.

New Yorker declared, "On the Internet no one knows you are a dog." According to an article in Psychology Today, by Stanley Coren, psychologists have beenstudying the human-canine bond. They  have long understood that dogs improve our lives. Dogs do this by providing a social presence. Humans interact with dogs in much the same way that they interact with other people, or at least with children. We talk to our dogs, and their presence relieves feelings of loneliness. Research suggests that this is why people who live alone, especially seniors, are much less likely to become clinically depressed if they have a dog as a pet.

Puppy Tweets make it possible for Internet-connected owners to benefit from social contact with their dogs. The social media device has two parts. The first is a USB receiver which connects to a computer. The second part is a sensor, which looks like a big pink or blue dog tag. The tag has a microphone to pick up any sounds the dog makes and a motion sensor that detects movement and acceleration as Fido goes about its daily activities. Based on the sound and motion readings the programming then analyzes makes a guess about what the dog is doing and at random intervals tweets about Spot’s activities. Mattel claims that it can detect 500 different activities and then send a clever tweet that updates Fido’s Twitter page.

Puppy Tweets logoThe article explains that after a session of fast movements and turns there might be a Tweet like, “It’s not the catching of the tail, it’s the chase.” A short period of moderate movement but no acceleration might result in the message “Guess what I’m licking right now.” A bout of barking might yield the message, “I bark because I miss you – there, now hurry home.” There is even a tweet to show that Spot is sleeping.  A Mattel representative told the author  that the degree of processing of sounds and activities was “not very high-powered.” According to the Mattel representative Puppy Tweets, “determines if sounds are coming in, and how much movement there is, and then selects from a set of candidate messages. So if you get a tweet saying that he is chasing a squirrel, he might actually be chasing a cat, running to the door, or digging a hole.”

The Tweets are not totally random according to the article. The Mattel rep continued, “The device is paying attention to the sound and movements to some degree. However, its accuracy should not be an issue. Look at it this way, several times each day the dog’s owner will get a message posted that the dog is doing something. Whether the tweet reflects what is actually going on at the moment or not, it gives his owner the feeling that the dog is connected to him or somehow near to him, and his loving owner then thinks about his dog for a moment or two. This makes the person feel good, and loved, even if it is more of an illusion than reality. That’s what toys are supposed to do – make people feel good and happy even if it is just for a short time and even if they are merely based on fantasy.

Dog tweetingThis product gives Mattel a unique entry into the social media market. It also capitalizes on the emerging trend of machine-to-machine computing. Puppy Tweets also opens new opportunities to develop canine content filtering software and parental control applications to check who Fido is tweeting with “Hey is there an app for that?”
