Windows Terrible, Horrible, No Good MonthRedmond’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad month continues. The WannaCry ransomware hit mostly Windows 7 machines, and now researchers from the Russian information security company Aladdin RD recently discovered a new bug that will slow down and crash Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 PCs, but does not seem to impact Windows 10 so far.

Microsoft logoIn a throwback to the Windows 95 and 98 era, Ars Technica reports that certain specially crafted filenames could make the operating system lock up or occasionally crash with a blue screen of death. Ars reports that the bug allows a malicious website to try to load an image file with the “$MFT” name in the directory path. Windows uses “$MFT” for special metadata files that are used by the NTFS file system. The effected systems do not handle this directory name correctly.

The file exists in the root directory of each NTFS volume, but the NTFS driver handles it in special ways. Ars explains that it’s hidden from view and inaccessible to most software. Attempts to open the file are normally blocked, but if the filename is used as if it were a directory name—for example, trying to open the file c:\$MFT\123—then the NTFS driver takes out a lock on the file and never releases it. Every subsequent operation sits around waiting for the lock to be released. Forever. This blocks all other attempts to get access to the file system, and so every program will start to hang, rendering the machine unusable until it is rebooted.

DDoSArs says that web pages that use the bad filename in an image source will provoke the bug and make the machine stop responding. Depending on what the machine is doing concurrently, it will sometimes blue screen. Either way, you’re going to need to reboot it to recover. Some browsers will block attempts to access these local resources, but Internet Explorer will try to open the bad file.

Ars couldn’t immediately cause the same thing to occur remotely (by sending IIS a request for a bad filename), but it wouldn’t immediately surprise us if certain configurations or trickery were enough to cause the same problem.

Windows Blue Screen of DeathThe Verge has successfully tested the bug on a Windows 7 PC with the default Internet Explorer browser. Using a filename with “c:\$MFT\123” in a website image, their test caused a machine to slow down to the point they had to reboot to get the PC working again.

A Microsoft spokesperson told Engadget that the company is looking into the matter and will give an update as soon as it can.
“Our engineers are currently reviewing the information. Microsoft has a customer commitment to investigate reported security issues and provide updates as soon as possible.”

The Redmond boys also had to release an emergency out-of-band update for the Malware Protection Engine aka Windows Defender. Two Google security researchers discovered the “crazy bad” flaw. They claimed it was “the worst Windows remote code exec in recent memory.” The TechNet article says the vulnerability they patched would allow remote code execution if the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine scans a specially crafted file (CVE-2017-0290). To MSFT’s credit, they did fix the bug and release the patch with a week of being notified.

Early reports are that this bug is an attack vector. However, this is a denial of service attack that will need a reboot. This new flaw could be bundled with other more dangerous malware to force the user to reboot allowing the attacking malware to get loaded.

Conficker Worm – Still Alive

Conficker Worm - Still AliveAfter 6 years Conficker remains one of the top 3 malware that affects enterprises and small and medium businesses according to Trend Micro’s (TMICY) TrendLab. They say 45% of malware-related spam emails they detected were related to Conficker. Trend Micro attributes this to the fact that a number of companies are still using Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows XP, which is susceptible to this threat.

For those that don’t remember our old friend Conficker (Trend calls it DOWNAD) it can infect an entire network via a malicious URL, spam email, and removable drives. Larry Seltzer at ZDNet’s Zero Day blog recalls that Conficker was a big deal back in late 2008 and early 2009. The base vulnerability caused Microsoft to release an out-of-band update (MS08-067 “Vulnerability in Server Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution”) in October 2008. In addition, Conficker has its own domain generation algorithm that allows it to create randomly generated URLs.  It then connects to these created URLs to download files on the system.

Technically, Windows Vista and the beta of Windows 7, were vulnerable, but their default firewall configuration mitigated the threat. It was Windows XP that was really in danger. Mr. Seltzer says that despite Microsoft’s patch, everyone knew that a major worm event was coming. When it came it was big enough that a special industry group (Conficker Working Group) was formed to coordinate a response.

45% of malware related spam mails are delivered by machines infected by the Conficker wormDespite the unprecedented industry effort, Trend Micro observed that six years later (2014 Q2), more than 45% of malware-related spam mails are delivered by machines infected by the Conficker worm. Analysis by the AV firm of spam campaigns delivering FAREIT, MYTOB, and LOVGATE  payload in email attachments are attributed to Conficker infected machines.

On Thursday, July 3 the Conficker Working Group detected +/- 1,131,799 unique IPs related to Conficker. Whatever the number,  it’s still a big number, for a 6-year old malware with a patch. Trend explains that the IPs use various ports and are randomly generated via the DGA ability of the malware. A number of machines are still infected by this threat and leveraged to send the spammed messages to further increase the number of infected systems.

With Microsoft ending the support for Windows XP this year, we can expect that systems with this OS will be infected by threats like Conficker for a long time to come. It is going to take years to work XP out of the system.

Limit Admin Rights to Close Microsoft Holes

Limit Admin Rights to Close MSFT HolesIt’s been best practice for a very long time: all users and processes should run with the fewest privileges necessary. That means no Admin rights for users. This limits the damage that can be done by an attacker if the user or process is compromised.

Avecto logoZDNet says that running users without admin rights on Microsoft (MSFT) Windows XP was generally impractical. It is a much more reasonable and manageable approach on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, but many organizations still run users as administrators because it makes things easier in the short term.

Impact of running with “least privilege”

ZDNet cites a new study from UK software company Avecto which demonstrates the real-world impact of running with “least privilege”. In 2013, Microsoft released 106 security bulletins and updates to address the 333 vulnerabilities identified in them. 200 of the 333 total vulnerabilities would be mitigated if the user were not running as administrator. 147 of the vulnerabilities were designated critical; 92 percent (135) of these would be mitigated.

Dark Reading says that the Avecto results also revealed that removing admin rights would also mitigate:

  • running with "least privilege"91% critical vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft Office,
  • 96% of critical vulnerabilities affecting Windows operating systems,
  • 100% of vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer and
  • 100% of critical remote code execution vulnerabilities.

Avecto told ZDNet that non-administrator users can still be compromised, but it’s much less likely that they would be and, if they were, the impact would likely be greatly limited. Least privilege is most effective as part of a more comprehensive security architecture including the prompt application of updates to patch vulnerabilities.

Paul Kenyon, co-founder, and EVP of Avecto told Dark Reading, “This analysis focuses purely on known vulnerabilities, and cybercriminals will be quick to take advantage of bugs that are unknown to vendors. Defending against these unknown threats is difficult, but removing admin rights is the most effective way to do so.”

Employees with admin rights can install, modify and delete software and files as well as change system settings making more work for the help desk folks. The report demonstrates that many companies are still not fully aware of how many admin users they have and consequently face an unknown and unquantified security threat. It is also conceivable that privilege management would have made high-profile attacks such as the recent one on Target if not impossible then much harder, by reducing the potential for the abuse of partner access, believed to have been at the heart of the breach.

Windows 8 Passes Vista – Finally

Windows 8 Passes Vista - FinallyThere must be some happiness in Redmond. Microsoft’s Windows 8 is finally more popular than the reviled Windows Vista. Windows 8 has been available since August 2012, which means it took Microsoft‘s (MSFT) latest operating system nearly 11 months to surpass the highly unpopular Windows Vista.

Windows 8 logoPCWorld cites data from Net Applications’ NetMarketshare tracker, which found that Windows 8 captured a whopping 5.10 percent of all desktop systems the firm tracks for the month of June. Vista’s market share now stands at 4.62 percent. Of course, both will need a few months (or years) before they pass Windows XP and Windows 7, both of which dipped about half a percentage point’s worth of share to finish the month with 44.37 percent and 37.17 percent, respectively.

Both Windows 7 and Windows XP’s sales are on the wane, Net Applications says, but it will be several years before Windows 8 passes them by. The article reports new momentum for Windows 8, which has struggled to lift its head above both third-party operating systems, as well as its own rivals in the Microsoft nest.

Waiting a long timeMicrosoft’s Windows 8 passed Apple’s (AAPL) Mac OS X 10.8 in February 2013. PCWorld calculates that if Windows 8 continues to increase its share at its current pace of about 0.5 percentage points per month—and if Windows XP continues to decline at about the same rate—Microsoft would need roughly 32 months, or until about February 2016, for Windows 8 to pass Windows XP.

The author also reports that analytics firm StatCounter showed similar results in June 2013, from its worldwide measurements of browser data which confirms that Windows 8 has increased its market share over Windows Vista. StatCounter said that Windows 8 captured 6.44 percent of all PCs, versus 5.94 percent at the beginning of June. StatCounter said, however, that the versions of Mac OS X combined, at 8.52 percent, were still higher than Windows 8.

The good news for most in Redmond (except those who were recently re-org’d) is that Windows 8 has finally gained more ground than Vista on desktops. Back in 2006, Vista had the same problem Windows 8 now has, but for different reasons. Windows Vista just did not work and now Windows 8 is confusing to consumers who don’t know what to do with the “Modern” touchscreen interface on their mouse-based systems.

MSFT joins the "post-pc era"MSFT might be trying to kill the desktop to join the “post-pc era” with the Metro apps in favor of touch tablets, laptops, and phones it has not worked out really well so far. To a degree, MSFT has caved in the pressure for a more traditional desktop experience with the recent free update to Windows 8.1 which restores some of the Start Button functionality.

Microsoft Security Report

Microsoft Security ReportMicrosoft (NASDAQ MSFT) released the latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIRv8) on April 26, 2010. Data for SIRv8  came from 500 million PCs across the globe between July and December 2009 and for the first time separates enterprise user and consumer user malware trend data. The data included in the 250-page report says that enterprises and consumers each suffer from different types of malware threats.

Microsoft logoThe good Microsoft security news from the SIR 8 report is that newer operating systems and up-to-date applications are the most secure. Windows 7 and Vista Service Pack 2 have the lowest infection rates per 1,000 executions of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) in the second half of last year. (pg. 85). Microsoft runs the Malicious Software Removal Tool before installing Windows updates.

The report shows that the more recent versions of Microsoft Windows are less vulnerable to attack. Cliff Evans, Microsoft UK’s head of security and privacy says only about 5% of the vulnerabilities are in Microsoft software. This has led to a shift in emphasis to targeting third-party programs and utilities. In XP, around 45% of attacks exploited third-party (i.e. non-Microsoft) code, with Vista and Windows 7 it’s around 75% according to an article in the Guardian.

Application attacks continue to increase. Running updated software decreases the attack surface and increases Microsoft security robustness. The report shows that attackers target Internet Explorer 6 (IE 6) up to four times more often than the newer version IE 7 (pg.33). Matt Thomlinson, general manager of product security in Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing group told DarkReading, “With Internet Explorer, IE 6 is four times more targeted in drive-by attacks.” Thomlinson says SIR 8 provides the first real results to illustrate this.

Browser attacks

The Microsoft security report says that nearly 75% of the browser-based exploits encountered in 2H09, were third-party applications, including Adobe Reader, RealPlayer, Apple QuickTime, and AOL software (pg.26). This means Windows Update is not enough to protect users, who must also install updates from Adobe, Apple, and other software suppliers.

Attacks against Microsoft Office make use of older vulnerabilities that have mostly been fixed and can easily be avoided by keeping the software suite up to date. The majority of Office file format attacks can be avoided by applying service packs (pg. 43). For example, 75.8% of the attacks on Microsoft Office files exploited a single vulnerability (CVE-2006-2492, the Malformed Object Pointer Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Word), which was found in 2006.

The report found that enterprise users contract more worms, “In the enterprise, worms are more of a problem, which is not a surprise in that you have networks with trusted file shares and USB devices, and they are more susceptible to those transmission mechanisms,” Thomlinson told DarkReading. “This is the first time we’ve had data allowing us to separate [enterprise and consumer machines] and show differences [in malware prevalence.]” Worms were found in 32 percent of enterprise PCs.

Rogue anti-virus attacks

Windows in both the enterprise and the consumer markets were hit hard by rogue anti-virus attacks last year. Rogue security software was found on 7.8 million up 46% from 5.3 million in the second half of last year. The most detected rogue security software family, Win32/FakeXPA, was also the third-most prevalent overall threat detected by Microsoft worldwide in 2H09. Three other rouge software families were also widely detected:

  • Win32/Yektel,
  • Win32/ FakeSpypro, and
  • Win32/Winwebsec.

MSFT claims that attacks are now motivated by financial gain, with a “black economy” of malware authors, botnet herders, and other criminals working together to exploit vulnerabilities in Windows PCs. “We’re seeing that the criminals are more professional and organized,” Thomlinson says. “This is really about criminals in shirts and ties, not with tattoos.” Criminals are becoming more specialized in different aspects of cybercrime. They are then coordinating with criminals with other specialties. He says. “Threats are being packaged together and sold as commodities and kits,” he says. “It struck us as we looked at botnets that this is an early version of cloud computing: There is computing available for whatever use they have in mind, and they are taking advantage of many machines to do that. This is the ‘black cloud’ of computing.

The next report will be interesting as attackers focus their attention on Win7 as it becomes wider deployed. The takeaway from the report is:
  • Keep your installed software patched to current levels.
  • Running old versions of operating systems, browsers, and application software exposes companies to additional unnecessary risks (Ask Google).
  • Invest into initiatives that get systems upgraded to the newest technology available.
