How Much Code Does It Take?David McCandless from Information is Beautiful tries to answer the question of how many millions of lines of code does it take to? For reference, the Visual Capitalist calculates that a million lines of code (MLOC), if printed, would be about 18,000 pages of text. That’s 14x the length of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. The total lines of code to run systems vary widely as Mr. McCandless shows in the infographic.

  • Stack of paperIt took less than a million lines of code to run the NASA Space Shuttle.
    • The Mars Rover Curiosity takes less than 5 million lines of code to run.
    • The latest version of the Firefox web browser includes just under 10 million lines of code.
    General Motors’ (GM) Chevy Volt requires just over 10 million lines of code.
    Microsoft (MSFT) Office 2008 for the Apple (AAPL) Mac consists of over 35 million lines of code.
    • And it took 50 million lines of code to bring us Microsoft Vista.
    • Finally, all Google (GOOG) services combine for a whopping 2 billion lines – that means it would take 36 million pages to “print out” all of the code behind all Google services. That would be a stack of paper 2.2 miles high!

Run Your DC with a Chevy

Run Your DC with a ChevyGeneral Motors (GM) is using Chevy Volt batteries to power a data center. MLive reports that expired lithium-ion batteries retrieved from Chevrolet Volt’s help power the General Motors Enterprise Data Center at the Milford Proving Grounds in Milford, MI.

GM logoGM recently announced that five batteries from first-generation Volts are working in parallel with a 74-kilowatt solar array and two 2-kilowatt wind turbines to green up the data center. The batteries have the capacity to provide backup power for four hours in the event of an outage, GM said. According to the article, the set-up has given the Enterprise Data Center a net-zero energy use on an annual basis, and extra power will be sent back to the grid used by the Milford Proving Ground.

First-gen Chevy Volts still have a lot of juice

As it readies to sell its all-new, second-generation Volt, GM said first-gen cars still have a lot of leftover juice in their battery packs for stationary use. Pablo Valencia, GM’s senior manager of battery life cycle management, said in a presser that the batteries still have value after they come out of the car.

Chevy Volt batteries to power a data center.Even after the battery has reached the end of its useful life in a Chevrolet Volt, up to 80 percent of its storage capacity remains … This secondary use application extends its life, while delivering waste reduction and economic benefits on an industrial scale.

The first-generation plug-in hybrid Volt went on sale in 2010 for the 2011 model year. It uses battery power to get an electric range of about 35-38 miles, before switching to gasoline.

Battery powered carThe 2016 Volt, unveiled last January in Detroit, will have about a 31% greater electric range than its predecessor. The second-gen Volt has about a 50-mile, all-electric range, and a total driving range of about 400 miles when combined with a gasoline engine.

According to the Detroit News, GM is working with unidentified partners to validate and test systems for other commercial and non-commercial uses. 

Elon Musk‘s Tesla (TSLA) is also leveraging its car-based battery systems to develop a line of storage batteries designed for homes and SMB’s called Powerwall. Powerwall is designed to store electricity for home use, to be used during peak consumption times when utilities charge the most. The device comes in several colors including white, charcoal, red, and blue. There are two options — a 7-kilowatt-hour package using nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries and a 10 kilowatt-hour unit with a nickel-cobalt-aluminum battery.

NVIDIA Comes to Detroit

NVIDIA Comes to DetroitAutomakers have made a beeline for Central California in recent years. They are setting up research and engineering facilities in the shadows of consumer electronics giants Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL). The Detroit Bureau asks if the migration be turning around? A major Silicon Valley firm, NVIDIA (NVDA), is reversing the trend by setting up a technical center in Ann Arbor.

NVIDIA technical center in Ann ArborAnnArbor.com reports the tech center will initially support about 20 employees. They will be primarily dedicated to working with the local automotive community. Danny Shapiro, director of automotive for Santa Clara, CA, based NVIDIA said that more work will likely be done at the center with supercomputing and graphics development. NVIDIA VP for worldwide automotive sales and Ann Arbor site leader Phil Hughes said. “We’re going to have software engineers, hardware engineers and field application engineers working here as well as people on the business and marketing side.” 

Who uses NVIDIA

Mr. Shapiro said the new facility will help the company’s growing team of Michigan-based engineers and executives work with automakers and suppliers. The Michigan team will develop the next generation of infotainment, navigation, and driver assistance programs. NVIDIA points out that Chrysler, Ford (F), General Motors (GM), and Volkswagen are already using NVIDIA products in their designs. NVIDIA believes having a technology center near the heart of the auto manufacturing community in Michigan makes sense.

Other high-tech firms opening centers in Southeast Michigan are Microsoft (MSFT) and Google, Mr. Shapiro noted. “This is where consumer electronics and safety advancements are being made that will change the driving experience for all of us,” the executive told the Detroit Bureau. “Nvidia has been fueling this trend for years. A number of our employees live in the area and are working closely with car companies.

High-tech start-ups

DetroitWhile there’s a small but growing presence of high-tech start-ups within the Motor City itself, many of the firms setting up shop in Michigan have chosen to go to Ann Arbor the home of the University of Michigan. “All of this activity has helped make Ann Arbor a high-tech hub and not just for the Detroit area,” Shapiro noted.

Michael Finney, president of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., said Nvidia already powers in-dash instrument clusters as well as navigation and information displays in more than 4 million vehicles from automakers such as Audi, Bentley, BMW, Lamborghini, Maserati, Rolls Royce, Tesla, and Volkswagen.

The Wireless Car FrontierNow that the mobile floodgates are open, developers, manufacturers, and platform operators are trying to design wireless cars. These devices will channel the next wave of mobile usage and innovation. Some are looking at wearable tech, such as Google‘s (GOOGGlass and the Pebbles Watch and as the natural progression of mobile technology. But computing platforms, including mobile operating systems, are also becoming ubiquitous in consumer electronics and appliances. The Business Insider writes that the greatest potential for mobile platforms and services could be cars.

Additionally, many of the activities people do in their cars, listen to music, look up directions, mesh nicely with popular activities on mobile. The author claims that Americans spend an average of 1.2 hours a day traveling between locations and American commuters spend an average of 38 hours a year stuck in traffic. If mobile apps and Internet-based services can shoehorn their way into the in-car environment, that means a great opportunity to expand their ability to engage consumers, absorb their attention, and gather data.

The BI explains that there is already a sizable and growing mobile market in the car. Five years from now, there will be over 60 million connected cars on the road globally, according to estimates from the GSMA and others. Car-focused telecom, hardware, and software services will drive some $51 billion in annual revenue by 2018. Pandora, for example, is now being used in 2.5 million cars and 100 car models through one of its 23 partnerships with auto brands and eight partnerships with stereo manufacturers. BI identified three ways in which mobile products and services can be integrated into cars.

However, the mobile device drives all key facets of the app, including Internet access, and the car simply provides some tools to facilitate it (i.e., dashboard user interface, voice controls, speakers, jacks, and/or steering wheel-based controls). Currently, many in-dash automobile app suites in cars are nothing more than an interface that provides control over a Bluetooth or audio jack-connected smartphone.

Tethering

The connection is provided through external means, but the computing and delivery of the services happen in the car. For example, a Bluetooth or USB connection might link a car’s navigation system to your phone-stored contact list, and from that moment forward a simple press of a button in the car would guide you to a friend’s house from any location. In this scenario, the car depends on the external device to gather Internet-based data.

Connection and intelligence are baked into the car. The car houses the operating system, apps, and other services that will deliver Internet-based mobile services to the user. A mobile device might sync with whatever is in the car, but external mobile gadgets aren’t essential to running car-based apps. GM is moving in this direction with its new fleet of 4G cars. (rb- I covered the evolution of 4G here) Means of integration can be blended, and often are. (rb- I wrote about Microsoft’s move into cars back in 2011, here.)

iOS in the Car

Emily Price at Mashable reports that Apple (AAPL) jumped into the mobile products and services integration game. Ms. Price reports that the folks from Cupertino have received a USPTO patent for a touchscreen car dashboard. If Apple carries through with their patent, it would replace most of your car’s existing instrumentation. The new dashboard would make your vehicle’s controls digital, letting you control everything from the temperature in your car to the radio station using a touchscreen.

OS in the CarThe article claims “iOS in the Car” should be released in 2014. Cars that support the service will allow your iPhone 5 to connect to your car’s in-dash system make phone calls, send and receive messages access your music, and get directions. Siri support will also let you do all of those things hands and eyes-free.

The blog reports that “Siri Eyes Free” is available in General Motors‘s (GMChevy Spark and Sonic via the Chevrolet MyLink system. According to reports sometime in 2014 Apple iOS will be available in 15 more car brands including:

Detroit moile cityI covered Ford (F) Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. plan to re-position Detroit as the “Silicon Valley of Mobility.” Hopefully, AAPL has figured out how to multi-thread iOS. I gave up my iPhone because it could not mult-thread. Every time I went to answer a call, I got 5 or 10 email pop’s that I had to deal with before I could answer the call. This kind of behavior could be catastrophic in a car.

What if you need to do two things at the same time, like shift from forward to reverse and turn on the air conditioning.

Then there is the privacy issue. Will AAPL give all the data they collect to the NSA or your insurance company?

Full Sized Hot Wheels Camaro

Eisenstein writes that a life-size Hot Wheels Chevy pony car is debuting at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Chevy and Mattel (MAT) have combined to put the Hot Wheels brand on a special edition 2013 Camaro. General Motors (GM) and Mattel have had a long and prosperous relationship. The toy company has produced matchbox-sized replicas of the pony car since 1968. The Camaro Hot Wheels is inspired by the 1968 “Custom Camaro” Spectraflame 1:64-scale toy.

Camaro Hot Wheels package

Chevy has used the Hot Wheels theme for several years at its SEMA. stand, In 2011 Chevy displayed a bright yellow version of the Camaro at the base of a life-size track. The blog reports that Chevy plans to actually add a Hot Wheels edition to the line-up. It will come as a $6,995 upgrade on both the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro and Camaro Convertible.

For the money, the special edition will get a bright metallic paint scheme that could come from the local toy shop. The Camero will also get special graphics, red-lined 21-inch wheels, and Hot Wheel flame badges on the fenders and trunk.

The Hot Wheels Camaro will feature matte-black touches around the hood and taillight surrounds. The upgrade will also borrow some trim pieces from the high-performance Camaro ZL1 package. That package includes the rear spoiler, front grille, and front splitter.

The black leather-trimmed interior will boast Hot Wheels logos embroidered on the front seats, which are finished in red and black stitching. The Hot Wheels flame will adorn the Camero’s door interiors with special Hot Wheels Edition sill plates completing the package. Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment package will come standard.

Engine options

TChevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels Concepthe Hot Wheels Camaro can be ordered with different engine options.  The base will have the Chevy 2LT package with its 3.6-liter V-6, rated at its stock 323 horsepower. For more fun on the track, upgrade to the 400-hp 2SS package featuring the 6.2-liter L99 V-8. The 2SS will be delivered with a dual-mode exhaust system, as will the 2LT equipped with a manual gearbox.

Chevy can only hope to match the success of the 1:64 edition Camaro. Mattel has sold its Camero by the millions over the last 44 years. The pony car was one of 16 original Hot Wheels models. Chevy is returning the favor. The Chevrolet Hot Wheels Camaro becomes the first production car to carry the toy series’ name.

The project was launched in 2010 and initially was focused on the concept model unveiled at the SEMA Show last year. The final production design for the 2013 street car was taken from one of five sketches worked up by Hot Wheels chief designer Felix Holst.

It’s been nearly 20 years since I started designing cars for Hot Wheels and I have yet to drive one home,” said Mr. Holst. The VP of creative for the Mattel Wheels Division continued, “Personally, I can’t wait to open the doors and see the Hot Wheels Camaro sitting in the garage.
