GM Recycles BP Gulf Oil Spill Waste Into Volt

General MotorsGM Recycles BP Gulf Oil Spill Waste Into Volt (NYSE: GM) has intercepted 100 miles of used oil control booms from the BP Gulf of Mexico mega oil spill, (which I wrote about here, here, here, and here) preventing them from going into landfills. Instead, TheDetroitBureau.com reports that oil-soaked booms are transformed into plastic parts for the Chevy Volt.

chevy_volt_logoMike Robinson, GM vice president of Environment, Energy and Safety policy explained to TheDetroitBureau that the automaker has been able to recycle the polypropylene plastics used in the oil booms set out to contain and capture the oil spilled by a runaway British Petroleum (BP) well. GM and its suppliers are turning the recycled material into plastic parts used in the Volt, such as a shroud for the radiator according to GM. “Creative recycling is one extension of GM’s overall strategy to reduce its environmental impact,” Mr. Robinson said, the Detroit-based automaker already finds ways to cut landfilling at 76 of its facilities. The recycling of Gulf oil booms, he added, “is a good example of using this expertise and applying it to a greater magnitude.”

In the article, Chris Miller vice president of sales and market for GDC Inc. says the old booms are mixed with other recycled material, including used tires, and processed to yield a plastic resin which can be shaped into a variety of plastic parts. “The recycled resin is a lot less expensive than virgin resin,” he said. In fact, GM’s Robinson described the overall process as “cost-neutral,” meaning the final parts and components cost the same as those produced by more conventional processes.

Recycling the booms will result in the production of more than 100,000 pounds of plastic resin for the vehicle components,” said John Bradburn, manager of GM’s waste-reduction efforts, eliminating an equal amount of waste that would otherwise have been incinerated or sent to landfills. “This was purely a matter of helping out,”  Mr. Bradburn told TheDetroitBureau. “If sent to a landfill, these materials would have taken hundreds of years to begin to break down, and we didn’t want to see the spill further impact the environment. We knew we could identify a beneficial reuse of this material given our experience” Mr. Bradburn added.

GM’s Bradburn says the project demonstrates the booms, which are also widely used around construction projects and limited spills, don’t have to be buried or burned but can be recycled. He also noted it should encourage the manufacturers of the booms to make them easier to recycle.

TheDetroitBureau says besides GDC, GM worked with several partners throughout the recovery and development processes. Heritage Environmental managed the collection of boom materials along the Louisiana coast. Mobile Fluid Recovery stepped in next, using a massive high-speed drum that spun the booms until dry and eliminated all the absorbed oil and wastewater. Lucent Polymers used its process to then manipulate the material into the physical state necessary for plastic die-mold production.

Hmm- something must be changing at GM, when I worked at the GM tech center in the 1990s there were not many green efforts. Even if this is a marketing ploy to beef up the Volt’s green-cred’s, it is a good step. Let’s hope they keep up the imaginative thinking.

Ann Arbor Icon Closed

The Ann Arbor landmark Village Corner market, better known as the VC to UM students has closed.

The Village Corner store at 601 S. Forest Ave. in Ann Arbor.

The store at the corner of South University and South Forest is scheduled to be demolished, along with the Student Campus bike shop and long-closed Bagel Factory (mmmm Fragel) to make room for “high-rise” student housing.

During my time on the University of Michigan campus, I made many trips to the VC for coffee, TP, and other necessities of student life.

U of M grad and VC owner Dick Scheer who has run the campus icon for 40 years with his wife, Sally, told the Detroit News that he plans to find a new spot for his store. Let’s hope so since much of the character of Ann Arbor is fading in my opinion.

Google Searches for Power on Seabed

Google Searches for Power on Seabed Google (GOOG) is investing in an undersea power cable project linking offshore wind farms with energy grids along the Mid-Atlantic region.  Known as the Atlantic Wind Connection backbone, the cable will stretch 350 miles off the Atlantic coast from New Jersey to Virginia. The cable will collect power from multiple offshore wind farms and deliver it via the cables to the on-shore grid. The AWC backbone will be able to tap into 6000 megawatts of offshore generation, enough to serve about 1.9 million homes according to reports.

Atlantic Wind Connection backboneGoogle, will take a 37.5% stake in the project. “We’re willing to take calculated risks on early-stage ideas and projects that can have dramatic impacts while offering attractive returns,” Rick Needham, green business operations director, wrote on the Google official blog.  Other investors in the project include U.S.-based Good Energies which invests in energy projects with a 37.5% equity stake, Japan’s Marubeni Corporation will have a 15% stake. Atlantic Grid Development LLC, a company formed to develop the project whose shareholders include independent transmission company Trans-Elect, will have 10%.

Businessweek says the first phase of the project, which the developers aim to complete by early 2016, would run about 150 miles and cost between $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion. The second phase to complete the 350-mile line could be finished by 2020, Bob Mitchell, chief executive officer of Trans-Elect, told reporters telephone interview. The New York Times reports the project will cost $5 billion total in total. Reports are that Google and Good Energies’ initial investment is about $200 million each for the first phase of the project.

Google logoThe partners believe that the mid-Atlantic region’s shallow waters will make it easier to install turbines 10-15 miles offshore, almost out of sight from land. Without it, offshore wind developers would be forced to build individual radial transmission lines from each offshore wind project to the shore, Needham claimed.  “This system will act as a superhighway for clean energy,” Mr. Needham wrote, adding that the proposed project could remove “a major barrier to scaling up offshore wind“. If successful, the AWC project will help to relieve grid congestion and boost transmission capacity in a key market. Google believes that the move into alternative energy is consistent with the company’s goal of promoting renewable energy.

This isn’t the first time Google has dipped its toe in the spreading pool of wind power. The search giant agreed to buy 114 megawatts of clean energy from an Iowa wind farm to power its data centers. Google also invested nearly 40 million in two wind farms.

Not that I really want to bet against Google, but the IEEE reports that Michigan has an offshore potential of 100 GW, nearly double that of  Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey. Perhaps Google co-founder and East Lansing native Larry Page remembers winters in Michigan and thinks that the moving ice sheets on the lakes could damage a tower.

More Broadband for Michigan

More Broadband for MichiganWireless Internet service provider Air Advantage based in Frankenmuth, Michigan has been awarded $64 million. The award is a combination of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants and loans. The award will create a wireless broadband and fiber-optic Internet network in Michigan’s lower peninsula according to an article on MLive.com.

In addition to the federal grants and loans, Air Advantage will contribute more than $10 million toward the project. “A big part of the (federal) grant is about providing people with more options, more affordable Internet access,” Dawn Zimmer, director of sales and marketing for Air Advantage told MLive.  “Even in 2010, it’s shocking the number of people who have no or very few Internet options.”

Award

The $64.25 million award consists of $31.95 million in grants and $32.3 million in loans. The loans must be used to buy capital equipment such as installation and service trucks, computers, transmitters and receivers. The award cannot be used for salaries or for the hiring of new staff, according to David Simmet, vice president of operations at Air Advantage in the MLive article.

With this funding Air Advantage will add more than 200 signal transmitting towers to the company’s existing network of 65 towers. Many of the existing towers are installed on area water towers, grain silos and cell phone towers. The project will serve 13 counties — Saginaw, Sanilac, Bay, Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Midland, Oakland, Shiawassee, Saint Claire, and Tuscola.

The Regional Educational Media Center 10 (REMC 10) will see direct benefits from the stimulus funds awarded. About $9 million of the award to Air Advantage is earmarked for constructing a fiber optic network. The 350-mile fiber-optic network will run throughout the Thumb. The partners will contract the construction to a company with expertise in fiber-optic installation. The high-speed network will connect 26 school districts, governmental facilities and Central Dispatch in Huron, Sanilac and Tuscola counties, according to Robert Frost, director of REMC-10. Frost said the network will allow for more collaboration. Partners will be able to get collaborative pricing for network devices and services like servers, content filters, firewalls, and more. It will also allow for distance learning through high-definition video conference units.

Connects existing networks in Michigan

The new network will connect to existing networks in Bay, Lapeer, St. Clair and Saginaw counties. It will allow for a direct, high-speed connection to other schools, colleges and universities throughout the state. “…they are going to … change the face of the eastern side of Michigan,” Sheila Stamiris, director of the Frankenmuth downtown development authority told MLive. “It really is incredible.

The Air Advantage estimates it will hire for an additional 142 positions. The new employees will provide equipment installation, technical support, and billing. The firm expects to start hiring in the next few months. This would be a 600% increase in jobs since the firm started in 2002. Ms. Stamiris said this likely will put Air Advantage among the city’s 10 largest employers. “They will be doing a lot of things using Frankenmuth as a home base and we are extremely grateful to be in that position,” Ms. Stamiris told MLive.

MTC Coming to Michigan

– Updated – 05/10/2018 – Microsoft moved its Regional Headquarters from Southfield Michigan to downtown Detroit. The new location is at Suite 500 of One Campus Martius (formerly Compuware Building), where the company unveiled its new Technology Center. The new 40,000-square-foot center will accommodate 200 employees from the Southfield Town Center location which will reportedly remain open.

MichiganMicrosoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) will expand its Michigan operations by creating a business consulting center in Southfield, MI. Crains reports that the Redmond, WA-based software company will be creating a Microsoft Technology Center, in the Southfield Town Center. Microsoft has used the MTC concept in other markets to help businesses use its products to solve problems, Additionally, it is a way for the companies to help each other,  Drew Costakis, director of the Southfield technology center told Crains.

MicrosoftOur new Technology Center is another expression of Microsoft’s longstanding commitment to the Detroit community, and we believe it will become a valuable resource for metro Detroit businesses,” said Mr. Costakis .“Because of its central location in southeast Michigan, the new facility is in an ideal location for customers throughout the region, enabling them to take advantage of all our technology offerings closer to home,” Mr. Costakis told the Oakland Press.

Microsoft Technology Center

We can do things at the high level to envision what to do with our software, we can collaborate on product designs, or even how to work from home,” he said.  “At the same time, we have a large partner ecosystem with companies such as HP, EDS, and Siemens. We can help our customers make connections as well.” Costakis explains “In Chicago, for example, where we’ve been there for a long time, it’s constantly booked.” Microsoft said its lease of the space began on August 1st.  the opening of the Microsoft Technology Center opening is planned for late fall.

Currently, there are eight Microsoft Technology Centers in the U.S.

Mr. Costakis would not comment on how many employees might be added for the expansion. Microsoft has 200 employees in Southfield Michigan. The software giant currently occupies approx. 40,000 square feet in the 1000 building of the Southfield Town Center office complex. The MTC will occupy space next to Microsoft’s existing Southfield office on the 19th floor of the building and occupy an extra 17,000 square feet. Microsoft has been a tenant of Southfield Town Center for 19 years

Mr. Costakis, a former automotive engineer, said it would be ideal to have a relationship with Lawrence Technological University across the Lodge Freeway.
