The 10 Amazon fulfillment centers in California, Texas, New Jersey, Washington, and Florida use:

  • More than 15,000 Kiva robots.
  • Robo-Stow, one of the largest robotic arms on Earth for moving large quantities of inventory for customer order fulfillment.
  • New vision systems for enabling the unloading and receipt of an entire trailer of inventory in as little as 30 minutes instead of hours.
  • High-end graphically oriented computer systems for employees to use while fulfilling orders for customers.

Kiva robotUSA Today reports the Kiva robots are about a foot tall and weigh about 350 pounds and can lift 700 pounds. They can travel at 5 mph. The Kiva software determines which items each human packer needs and in what order and sends instructions to the robots.

The Kiva-bots follow bar-coded stickers on the floor, to bring a line of shelving units to the human packers, stopping just long enough for the correct item to be plucked from the shelf. Then the Kiva robot carries the whole unit back to its place and goes to get another one.

Despite the robotic army, AMZN says they plan to hire 80,000 seasonal employees this year, a 14 percent increase from last year. They also claim to retain thousands of those new employees in regular, full-time roles after Christmas. We will see about the jobs.

Robot LawnmowerSummer is finally here again. It is going to be 90 out this weekend and I have to get the lawn cut. It is time to seriously consider putting tech to work for me. The LB1200 Spyder by Kuyodo America just may be the robot lawnmower the doctor ordered.

LB1200 Spyder by Kuyodo AmericaThe Spyder is the world’s first robot lawnmower that doesn’t use a perimeter wire to operate. Patented sensors actually ‘sense’ when the LawnBott Spyder is over the grass to cut, reversing direction when over walkways, curbs, patios, and mulched areas.

According to its website, all you do is set it down, turn it on, and walk away. It has 4 cutting disc blades to cut your lawn for up to 3.5 hours on a single charge using a Li-ion battery. This model is designed for yards up to up to 5,500 sq. ft. The LawnBott Spyder has 4WD to tackle slopes up to 27°. The manufacturer says the LawnBot uses up to $10 of electricity a season.

The robot lawnmower can be charged from your house electrical. No special re-charger is required and its code can be updated via the web.

Foxconn Replacing 1 Million Humans with Robots

Foxconn Replacing 1 Million Humans with RobotsI recently noted from the Bach Seat that the manufacturer of all things digital, Foxconn was moving production to Brazil from China because of rampant wage inflation. Now it seems that the Taiwanese technology giant has decided that to drop people from production altogether. TechEye reports that Terry Gou, founder, and chairman of Foxconn (2038), told Xinhuanet that the firm will replace up to 1 million people with robots over the next three years.

foxconn logoMr. Gou told Xinhuanet that Foxconn now has 10,000 robots and the number will be increased to 300,000 next year and 1 million in three years. The manufacturer now has over 1.2 million employees with one million of them based in China.

Mr. Gou told Xinhuanet the robots will replace humans who do simple and routine work such as spraying, welding, and assembling of products for firms such as Apple (AAPL), HP (HPQ), Cisco (CSCO), Dell (DELL), ASUS (2357), Intel (INTC), Microsoft (MSFT), Nintendo (7978) and Sony (SNE).

foxconn workersFoxconn needs to automate more of its manufacturing processes in order to make up for labor shortages and stay ahead of its competitors, said Amy Teng, an analyst with research firm Gartner (IT), told PCWorld.

Mr. Gou told employees that he wanted to move the company’s workers “higher up the value chain, beyond basic manufacturing work,” according to a company statement cited by PCWorld.

While no one will deny that robots are efficient and they also don’t commit suicide due to harsh working conditions. But as we painfully know here in Detroit, robots create job losses, thus generating unintended consequences throughout the world economy. What could be the unintended consequences of 1 million unemployed Foxconn workers in the Peoples Republic of China?

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder should be pushing Foxconn to build its robot factory in DetroitIf political leaders like former Gateway Computers CEO and Michigan Governor Dick Snyder and President Obama were truly interested in creating jobs in Michigan, they would be welcoming this announcement and pushing hard for Foxconn to build its robot factory in Detroit, where land is cheap and skilled robotics technicians cast off by the auto-makers can tend to the Foxconn robots.

GM built Robot Works for NASA

GM built Robot Works for NASANASA recently had a coming-out party at the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center for one of its newest projects. The party was for a human-like robot called the Robonaut 2 (R2) developed with General Motors (GM). The R2 robot has a human shape, weighs about 300 pounds, runs on a battery. The NASA/GM-robot will join the team of the space shuttle Discovery on  STS-133 mission to the International Space Station. STS-133 is scheduled for takeoff on November 1, 2010. Although it will initially only take part in operational tests, upgrades could eventually allow the robot to realize its true purpose. R2 can help astronauts on spacewalks with tasks outside the space station.

I liked the big blue GM logo on R2. This is another example of the value of the domestic auto industry for the good of the U.S.  Alan Taub, vice president of GM’s global research and development said in a press release, “Partnerships between organizations such as GM and NASA help ensure space exploration, road travel and manufacturing can become even safer in the future.

GM LogoGM’s manufacturing engineering team is already working to find potential applications for R2’s array of vision, motion, and sensor technologies that will aid workers in manufacturing operations. According to GM’s Taub, “The work done by GM and NASA engineers also will help us validate manufacturing technologies that will improve the health and safety of our GM team members at our manufacturing plants throughout the world.

For GM, this is about safer cars and safer plants,says the GM VP for global research and development. “When it comes to future vehicles, the advancements in controls, sensors, and vision technology can be used to develop advanced vehicle safety systems. The partnership’s vision is to explore advanced robots working together in harmony with people, building better, higher quality vehicles in a safer, more competitive manufacturing environment.”

Maybe it will be a reminder to politicians like Dick Shelby of AL who opposed loans to GM to further the interests of the foreign car assemblers in Alabama.
