6 Steps to Safely Return to the Office

6 Actions to Return to the Office SafelyIn the back of our minds, we had to know that it would end. After a year of working from home, employers have decided that the Covid-19 pandemic is over. Despite the increased productivity WFH has created, the bosses want us to return to the office. Many employees do not want to return to the office. Being forced to return to the office is creating stress and anxiety among employees.

uncomfortable with in-person interactionMany employees have lingering worries about the virus. A survey released by the American Psychological Association found that 48% of vaccinated workers are uncomfortable with in-person interaction. Another return to the office concern is anti-vaxxer co-workers. After all, only 45% of U.S. residents have completed their vaccination  A Harvard Business School survey found that 71% of workers would prefer to wait until everyone is fully vaccinated before returning to the office. More than half of those surveyed also still expect to social distance inside the office.

Return to the office angst

For many, the return to the office angst is the result of potential pandemic-induced changes to our brains. Normally, the amygdala region of the brain – that processes emotions, signals when a potential threat is present. Usually, the signal is tied to a negative emotion such as fear or anger, explained Crystal Reeck, an assistant professor at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. That triggers a fight-or-flight response. “Think about it as an alarm system,” she said. “It helps draw your attention to a threat in the environment.

During the lockdown the amygdala may have gotten rewiredMs. Reeck warns, that during the lockdown, the amygdala may have gotten rewired. Your brain may classify events like a co-worker coughing, or standing closer than six feet, or not wearing a mask as a threat. She explained, “That’s helped keep us safe when we were supposed to quarantine and maintain a social distance.

Return to work steps

To reduce your return to work angst, here are five tips to help you prepare physically and mentally for that psychologically jarring first week back at the office.

1 -Adjust your sleep schedule

Three weeks before returning to work, gradually adjust your sleep schedule. During the lockdown, many of us stayed up later to binge-watch the latest thing. No more binging, Go to bed earlier, so you can wake up earlier. We had the flexibility to roll out of bed five minutes before start time … no pants or shoes needed. Most workers have at least a 20-minute commute, plus a more appropriate grooming schedule, so leave yourself at least 40 minutes plus your commute time.

adjust your sleep scheduleWhy three weeks? Experts say that a new habit takes a minimum of three weeks to form. So go to bed a few minutes earlier in the evening. Then get out of bed a couple of minutes earlier in the morning. Increase the time every few days until you are back on the office schedule.

2 – Re-start your exercise routine

Many people gained the infamous 19 pounds during the COVID-19 pandemic. Restart your exercise routine at least three weeks you return to work. Don’t head back to the gym the first week back to the office. Week one is going to be traumatic enough. Healthcare professionals emphasize starting off slowly with moderate walking, swimming, or biking.

3 – Pajamas aren’t appropriate for the office, and you know it.

Freshen up your business appropriate wardrobe before you return to work. Business appropriate attire matters for two reasons: First, one team member’s sense of what’s appropriate can be far from others’ perception of the same. Second, studies over the years have demonstrated that wearing business-appropriate clothing reminds you to work in a business-like manner

Wear your work shoes around the houseIn the coming weeks, put on your work shoes. Many of us have been living in Chuckie T’s or Crocs – no more. Wear your work shoes around the house to get used to them. Give then a good polish

Get a haircut. Feel like you’re starting a new job.

4 – Take control of your health. Don’t expect your employer to care. Here’s a short list of things to do:

  • Wash your hands.
  • Bring a personal bottle of hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes for your work area. Practice routine cleaning and disinfection of frequently touched objects and surfaces such as workstations, keyboards, telephones, handrails, and doorknobs.
  • Practice routine cleaning and disinfectionBring your own water bottle and coffee mug. Wash them yourself to be sure it is clean.
  • Get a clean, new, well-fitting three-ply cloth mask exclusively for work that doesn’t have any logos or words. Even if you don’t need to wear a mask at work.
  • Consider investing in an air purifier for your cube. Look for one that has;
    • A five-speed model (quieter),
    • A HEPA H13 activated carbon filter,
    • UV LED light and Ion generator,
    • AHAM Verified Clean Air Delivery Rate.

5 – Avoid Sharing Materials and Supplies

  • Avoid using other employees’ phones, desks, offices.
  • Avoid sharing work tools and equipment.
  • Develop a protocol to clean and disinfect shared items.

6 – Get vaccinated!

The vaccine protects everyone, including those who already got it and those who can’t get it due to medical reasons.

Others believe bosses are just eager to regain tight control of their minions. The C-levels are setting deadlines to return to the office and threatening those that don’t feel comfortable going back into the office.

Only 5% of decision-makers surveyed believe remote workers are more productive, and 70% said employees in the office are more trustworthy.

Hot Wheels Roll into NFT

Hot Wheels Roll into NFTMattel (MAT) has joined the cryptocurrency craze. The toymaker will offer three pieces of digital art in the form of nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, for auction on its Mattel Creations website. The digital art sale will feature several iconic Hot Wheels vehicles in the Hot Wheels NFT Garage Series. The one-of-a-kind works will feature classic cars in their original colors from the initial release:

  • The Twin Mill was designed in 1968 as a sleek racer with twin big-block engines.
  • Bone Shaker NFTThe Bone Shaker is a hot-rod-style machine with a skull and bones theme.
  • Finally, the Deroa II represents one of the original 16 cars Mattel released. The model has a bubble windshield, an engine in the back, and a pair of surfboards.

The virtual cars will be auctioned off, beginning on June 22, 2021, at noon Eastern. The auction will run for a week. Mattel is only accepting the cryptocurrency Ethereum (ETH). Bidding starts at $0.99. With only one NFT of each car being created, prices could soar.

Mattel planning more NFT collections

NFT auctionsMattel has stated that it was already in the planning stages to release similar NFT auctions for other intellectual properties. CEO Richard Dickson stated that the Hot Wheels NFT move is part of Mattel’s effort to remain relevant by evolving toys into digital art. “Part of our effort to make Mattel relevant is to make sure that our brands are timeless and timely … We need to be on top of current conversations.”

Some examples of brands owned by Mattel that could release NFTs include:

  • American Girl,
  • Barbie,
  • Fisher-Price,
  • Masters of the Universe, and
  • Matchbox.

What is an NFT

What is an NFTNFTs are non-fungible tokens. An NFT is a piece of digital content that you own that still retains the creator’s information. For instance, artists can sign their artwork by including their signature in an NFT’s metadata. The creator’s information is maintained in the blockchain. Unlike bitcoin (BTC), which also uses a blockchain, you can’t trade an NFTs for a pizza, because the NFT is not fungible. Fungibility is the ability to substitute one unit of a financial instrument for another unit of the same financial instrument. Every dollar or bitcoin has the same value at the same time.

Each NFT is attached to a specific digital asset i.e. a piece of art, or a picture of a Hot Wheels car. An NFT is a unique, digital version of a certificate of authenticity, publicly approved by the blockchain and not money. NFTs have become popular in the art world because they allow artists to have more control over their works by selling limited-edition digital goods directly to consumers.

Sell directly to the consumer as an NFTForbes explains that Blockchain technology and NFTs offer content creators a unique opportunity to monetize their wares. For example, artists no longer have to rely on galleries or auction houses to sell their art. Instead, the artist can sell it directly to the consumer as an NFT, which also lets them keep more of the profits. In addition, artists can program in royalties so they’ll receive a percentage of sales whenever their art is sold to a new owner. This is an attractive feature as artists generally do not receive future proceeds after their art is first sold.

NFTs environmental impact

NFTs environmental impact Then there is the environmental impact of NFTs, which has attracted real scrutiny. The computing power required to operate the underlying blockchain system of NFTs is immense. By some estimates, one crypto transaction could gobble up more power than the average U.S. household uses in a single day. One artist estimated that generating six NFT pieces consumed more electricity than his entire physical studio did in two years.

Some people believe this is the future of buying, selling, and trading assets. But critics say the market could crash if cryptocurrencies tumble.

What Michigan City Has The Fastest Download Speeds

fastest download speedsThe politicians in Lansing are not known for doing anything good quickly. But they do have fast internet. New rankings from RootMetrics showed that Lansing, Michigan had one of the fastest download speeds in the U.S. during the second half of 2020. Lansing ranked 6th out of 125 markets in the RootMetrics report.

Fastest download speeds in Michigan

Lansing’s median download speed across the major carriers was 43.7 Mbps. Michigan’s capital city had faster aggregate median download speeds than tech-heavy markets. Lansing ranked better than Chicago (36 Mbps), San Fransico (34.6 Mbps), Dallas (32.3 Mbps), or Los Angeles (31.6 Mbps).

Michigan metro’s rated surprisingly well, overall.

  • Detroit ranked 16th nationally at 39.5 Mbps.
  • Ann Arbor came in 47th with 34.4  Mbps.
  • Flint‘s 31.8 Mbps earned it the 59th spot.

The article says that speeds of 30 Mbps are typically fast enough for users to enjoy smooth gaming and fast file downloads.

the worst download speeds

Slowest download speeds

The metropolitan areas with the worst download speeds are spread across the U.S.  The report says Antelope Valley, CA (20.0 Mbps), Madison, WI (19.3 Mbps), and  Fresno, CA (18.8 Mbps) were the worst.

RootMetrics told FierceWireless smaller markets like Lansing have some advantages over the mega-markets like Chicago or Los Angles.  Rishikesh Bhandari, RootMetrics RF engineer explained,

Technology rollouts and the optimization of those technologies (such as 5G or higher-order carrier aggregation, among others) can often take longer in bigger cities precisely because of size …  there are far more people for the carriers to serve—and over much larger geographic distances … the carriers must ensure smooth technology deployments … and that can take time, especially in bigger cities, with millions of people and thousands of square miles to cover.

How they test the fastest download speeds

RootMetrics conducts its tests with unmodified Android-based smartphones purchased off the shelf at regular mobile phone stores. To determine which metropolitan markets across the U.S. were home to the fastest and slowest speeds, the Bellevue, WA based firm aggregated the overall median download speeds recorded across all network technologies (4G LTE and 5G, where applicable) for AT&T (T), T-Mobile (TMUS), and Verizon (VZ)n in each of the 125 most populated metropolitan markets in the country and ranked them from fastest to slowest.

The End of the Seven-Digit Local Call

Seven-Digit Local Calls Coming to an EndThe seven-digit local call is doomed. Soon it will no longer be possible to call the next-door neighbor or corner store without an area code. U.S. voice providers – wireline – wireless and cable — have started notifying their customers of the change. Phone users need to start dialing 10-digits whenever they make a call – local or long distance. The FCC is forcing the 10 digit – 3 digit area code plus the 7 digit local number.

FCC commissioner Ajit PeiThe FCC is mandating (FCC Order 20-100) this change to make it possible for callers to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline by just dialing “988.” The federally financed National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The new law will allow states to collect fees from mobile service providers and use the funds to support 988, though it’s unclear how much more funding the fees will generate. 988 will allow a shift from a law enforcement and justice system response to one of immediately connecting to care for individuals in suicidal, mental health, and substance use crises. The number is the first step to make a fundamental shift in how communities engage people in crisis. When you’ve got a police, fire, or rescue emergency, you call 911. When you have an urgent mental health need, you’ll call 988.

National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis LifelineFierce Telecom explains that in July 2020 the FCC established the 988 hotline. The 988 hotline will make it faster for people to connect to crisis counselors and get help without having to remember a longer toll-free number. And now the agency is considering expanding this to require text messaging providers to support text messaging to 988. In its Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking issued in April 2021.

In its order, the FCC noted that text messaging is particularly popular with teenagers and young adults and also those that are deaf or have speech disabilities.

Given the pervasiveness of text messaging, particularly among at-risk groups, we believe it is essential to explore making it as easy as possible to reach the Lifeline by text through the use of the same short, easy-to-remember code by which Americans will be able to call the Lifeline.

Why we need 10-digit dialing

The reason 10-digit dialing is necessary to make the 988 hotline work is because the North American Numbering Plan Administrator has to make sure that calls to 988 get directed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If someone has a seven-digit number that starts with 988, the phone switch will not know whether this call needs to go to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline or to the seven-digit number. By requiring 10-digit dialing, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator is able to prevent any confusion to the system.

When will the local call change begin?

When will the local call change begin?Beginning April 24, you should begin dialing 10 digits (area code plus telephone number) for all local calls. Your call will still get completed if you forget and dial just seven digits.

Beginning Oct. 24, you must dial 10 digits (area code plus telephone number) for all local calls. Calls made with only seven digits may not be completed after Oct, 24. A recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.

Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.

rb-

Michigan residents impacted by this change are in the 616, 810, 906, 989 area codes. If you live in one of the impacted areas, be sure to include the area code, or they may stop working, including:

  • Medical alert devices,
  • Security systems,
  • Fax machines,
  • Speed dialers,
  • Contact lists,
  • Websites,
  • Stationery, and
  • Advertising.

Hopefully, this will reduce the number of people in a mental health crisis being killed by police not prepared to deal with mental health crises.
