Wireless Week is reporting that Texas Instruments has announced a new processor, the OMAP 3440 which will enable high-definition video recording on smartphones. TI also demonstrated the Pico chipset, at the recent Mobile World Congress, which includes a chip and processor for handheld and mobile HD video projections devices.
TI officials speculate that the high-definition capabilities could start showing up in devices by early 2009. Brian Carlson, technology manager in TI’s cellular systems unit says, “Video is the next big wave for mobile, imaging was first, then audio and now video is catching hold.” Greg Delagi, TI senior VP says, “We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of how important and helpful mobile devices will become to each and every one of us.”
