VGA, DVI to Wane Over Next Five YearsThe venerable Video Graphics Array (VGA) port and it upstart cousin digital-visual interface (DVI) port will become extinct over the next five years. So says Brian O’Rourke, research director at NPD In-Stat in a recent report published on PCWorld. NPD In-Stat points out how new laptops today come with HDMI and DisplayPort for interfacing with HDTVs, monitors and projectors.

VGA VGAhas no upgrade path, and DVI has only gone through one minor upgrade cycle; in comparison, HDMI and DisplayPort are continuously being upgraded, according to O’Rourke. More importantly, chipmakers such Intel (INTC) and AMD (AMD) are phrasing out chipset support for VGA by 2015, while AMD has announced it will phase out chipset support for DVI by 2015. NPD In-Stat is forecasting shipments of devices with DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort to pass 2 billion by 2015.

VGA’s long history stretching back to its introduction in 1986 makes it difficult to envision a world without it. Still, there have been ample signs of its impending obsolescence, such as the introduction of DVI and HDMI ports in mid-to-high-end displays in recent years.

HDMI portOf course, its forced retirement will mean that VGA will no longer be available as a fallback option for auditoriums and function rooms around the world. The presence of interface adapters can help, though businesses will probably need to give greater consideration to the presence of multiple interface support when acquiring new display devices or projectors.

Web Connected Television New Source of ThreatsYou may want to consider the security of the fancy new 55-inch high-def LCD Television that Santa Claus brings you. Surprise, surprise, surprise they may have security holes that could allow hackers to take over your home network. Consumer appetite for on-demand and online video content will drive sales of Internet-connectable TV devices to nearly 350 million units worldwide by 2015 reports ITnewsLink.

Parks AssociatesConnected Living Room: Web-enabled TVs and Blu-ray Players forecasts worldwide sales of Internet-connectable HDTVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and digital video players like Apple‘s (AAPL) Apple TV will grow about fourfold from 2010.

Parks Associates says all major manufacturers are debuting new models with innovations in content aggregation, apps development, and user interfaces. Content options are finally catching up to the hardware innovations, and growing libraries of on-demand movies and TV available are starting to unlock the potential of connected TV devices as multifunction online entertainment and communications platforms.

The growth of these devices will increase opportunities for apps developers – including third-party developers and giants such as Google (GOOG), Samsung, and Yahoo (YHOO), and one other group, hackers.

Mocana logo Mocana, a company that focuses on securing the “Internet of Things”, released a study that highlights digital security flaws in Internet-connected HDTVs reports ITnewsLink. The Mocana researchers believe that the security flaws exist in many Internet TVs and recommend that consumers seek out third-party security tests before they purchase and install them in their homes.

Mocana’s CEO Adrian Turner told ITnewsLink: “…manufacturers are rushing Internet-connected consumer electronics to market without bothering to secure them … consumer electronics companies that might lack internal security expertise should seek it out, before connecting their portfolio of consumer devices to the Internet.”

Computer securityMocana’s research shows that attackers may be able to leverage Internet-connected TVs to hack into consumers’ home networks. Researchers found that the Internet interface failed to confirm script integrity before those scripts were run. Mocana was able to show that JavaScript could then be injected into the normal data stream, allowing attackers to obtain total control over the device’s Internet functionality. As a result, an attacker could intercept transmissions from the television to the network using common “rogue DNS”, “rogue DHCP server”, or TCP session hijacking techniques. The security holes could allow attackers to:

  • Present fake credit card forms to fool consumers into giving up their private information.
  • Create a man-in-the-middle attack on the HDTV to dupe consumers into thinking that “imposter” banking and commerce websites were legitimate.
  • Steal the TV manufacturer’s digital “corporate credentials” to gain special VIP access to backend services from third-party organizations including popular search engines, video streaming, and photo sharing sites.
  • Monitor and report on consumers’ private Internet usage habits without their knowledge.

The flaws Mocana uncovered should raise questions about the security of consumer electronics in general-which manufacturers are scrambling to connect to the Internet, often with little or no security technology on board.

NewmanMocana’s CEO Adrian Turner continued: “While much public discussion … on the recent explosion of smartphones … the vast majority of new devices coming onto the Internet aren’t phones at all: they are devices like television sets, industrial machines, medical devices, and automobiles – devices representing every conceivable industry. And the one thing that all these manufacturers have in common is that, unlike the computing industry, they don’t have deep experience in security technology.”

HDTV over Wi-Fi

HDTV over Wi-FiTelephonyOnline has an article speculating that wireless high definition television will be available this summer. Celeno Communications, an Israeli start-up backed by Cisco, manufactures Wi-Fi chips. Their semiconductors can make Wi-Fi networks robust enough to deliver multiple high-definition television (HDTV) streams to PCs, TV’s or other consumer electronics devices. Celeno’s technology would deliver on a significant part of the anywhere, anytime video promise.

Celeno’s OptimizAIR technology will work with existing receivers such as set-top boxes, uses the 5 GHz spectrum. OptimizAIR uses standard PHY and MAC layers. It uses proprietary algorithms that the company says can double the throughput of standard 802.11 Wi-Fi. It can also increase the range of the Wi-Fi signals as much as eight times. Celeno’s technology additions include Spatial Channel Awareness and Beam-Forming MIMO (multiple inputs, multiple outputs). The company said it can stream HD video 120 feet, through four brick walls and more than three floors.

HD Video on Your Cell Phone

HD Video on Your Cell PhoneWireless Week is reporting that Texas Instruments has announced a new processor, the OMAP 3440 which will enable high-definition video recording on smartphones. TI also demonstrated the Pico chipset, at the recent Mobile World Congress, which includes a chip and processor for handheld and mobile HD video projections devices.

TI logoTI officials speculate that the high-definition capabilities could start showing up in devices by early 2009. Brian Carlson, technology manager in TI’s cellular systems unit says, “Video is the next big wave for mobile, imaging was first, then audio and now video is catching hold.” Greg Delagi, TI senior VP says, “We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of how important and helpful mobile devices will become to each and every one of us.

Television Warning

Television WarningAs part of the migration to digital television, the FCC will require those who sell television receiving equipment without digital tuners after May 25, 2007, to disclose at the point of sale that the equipment will require a converter box to receive over-the-air television after Feb. 17, 2009.

Citing “a matter of public safety for consumers who rely on analog-only television” to receive emergency information via television broadcast, the commission is requiring a transparent sticker with warning information be affixed to the screens of analog TV for sale or displayed separately “immediately adjacent” to each analog TV for sale. For TV devices without displays, the alert must be “in a prominent location.”
