Holey Optochip Transfers TBPS Using LightIBM scientists will report on a prototype optical chipset, dubbed “Holey Optochip.” It is the first parallel optical transceiver to transfer one trillion bits – one terabit – of information per second. IBM will present the new chip at the 2012 Optical Fiber Communication Conference, conference for optical communications and networking professionals.

IBM old logoThe Holey Optochip is a standard silicon CMOS chip with holes punched in it. According to ITnewsLink, it was not possible to transport terabits of data for existing parallel optical communications technology until now. Reportedly the new IBM (IBM) chip prototype will deliver ultra-high interconnect bandwidth. The new compact chip will efficiently enable bandwidth to facilitate growth. Some of the segments it is targeted at are big data and cloud computing and next-generation data center applications.

Big Blue speculates that the chip could move information eight times faster than today’s systems. Speeds that fast could transform how data is accessed, shared, and used. It could open a new era of communications, computing, and entertainment. “Reaching the one trillion bit per second mark with the Holey Optochip marks IBM’s latest milestone to develop chip-scale transceivers that can handle the volume of traffic in the era of big data,” said IBM Researcher Clint Schow, part of the team that built the prototype.

Holey OptochipThe holes in Holey Optochip allow light through the chip. They produce an ultra-compact, high-performing, and power-efficient optical module. It is capable of record-setting data transfer rates.  ITnewsLink says optical networking can significantly improve data transfer rates by speeding the flow of data using light pulses, instead of sending electrons over wires. Researchers have searched for ways to make use of optical signals widespread within standard low-cost, high-volume chip manufacturing. The Holey Optochip module is constructed with commercially available components, providing the possibility to manufacture at economies of scale.

We have been actively pursuing higher levels of integration, power efficiency, and performance for all the optical components through packaging and circuit innovations. We aim to improve on the technology for commercialization in the next decade with the collaboration of manufacturing partners,” Mr. Schow said in a press release.

The Holey Optochip achieves its speed while consuming less than five watts. IBM claims the power consumed by a 100W light bulb could power 20 transceivers. This progress in power-efficient interconnects will allow companies who adopt high-performance computing to manage their energy load while performing powerful applications such as analytics, data modeling, and forecasting.

Technical Aspects of the Holey Optochip

The article explains that parallel optics is a fiber optic technology. It is primarily targeted at high-data, short-reach multimode fiber systems that are typically less than 150 meters. Parallel optics differ from traditional duplex fiber optic serial communication.  In parallel optics, data is simultaneously transmitted and received over multiple optical fibers.

Holey Optochip with optical viasA single 90-nanometer IBM CMOS transceiver IC becomes a Holey Optochip with the fabrication of forty-eight through-silicon holes, or “optical vias.” There is one optical via for each transmitter and receiver channel. Simple post-processing on completed CMOS wafers with all devices and standard wiring levels results in an entire wafer populated with Holey Optochips. The transceiver chip measures only 5.2 mm x 5.8 mm. Twenty-four channel, industry-standard 850-nm VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) and photodiode arrays are directly flip-chip soldered to the Optochip. This direct packaging produces high-performance, chip-scale optical engines. The Holey Optochips are designed for direct coupling to a standard 48-channel multi-mode fiber array through an efficient microlens optical system that can be assembled with conventional high-volume packaging tools.

This one does not count as a new speed record – yet. It’s not real. Once Big Blue demonstrates Holey Optochip in the real world like this and this then it probably will be the fastest toy in town. The raw speed of one transceiver is equal to the bandwidth consumed by 100,000 users at today’s typical 10 Mb/s high-speed internet access.

At one terabit per second, IBM’s Holey Optochip will offer unprecedented amounts of bandwidth to move data like machine-to-machine communications (M2M) and other Internet of Things (IoT) components as well as posts to social media sites like Facebook (FB) and Twitter, videos to YouTube and digital pictures to Pinterest.

Order A Pizza With IoT

Order A Pizza With IoTA pizzeria in Dubai has unveiled a new refrigerator magnet that can order a pizza with a single tap. Samantha Murphy at Mashable reports that a pizza box-shaped magnet called the VIP Fridge Magnet is connected to Red Tomato Pizza in Dubai.

The magnet is preset to order a pizza online and is networked to the Internet of Things via a  Bluetooth connection on a smartphone. Red Tomato Pizza then sends a confirmation text and delivers the pizza soon after. You can also update your pizza selection online at any time.

Order Red Tomato PizzaThis isn’t the first time a pizza company has used modern technology to make ordering easier. Ann Arbor, Michigan based Dominos Pizza (DPZ) has an app that allows users to place, customize and pay for their order with a few taps.

Ms. Murphy points out that refrigerators have also recently been in the spotlight for embracing the web. In fact, Samsung touted a refrigerator that tweets, plays music, and even displays your Google Calendar. Meanwhile, LG announced earlier this year a new line of smart appliances, including a refrigerator that helps you maintain your diet, sends recipes to your smart oven and even keeps you posted when you run out of certain groceries.

This is a great example of the “Internet of Things” by creating a new application by combining the IP network, Bluetooth networking, and smartphone technologies to do a task with very little human interaction.

Your Dog Can Run, But He Can't HideThere is a new pet-oriented Global Positioning Systems (GPS) on the market. The new GPS system now makes it possible to constantly track your best friend according to a report in MIT’s Technology Review. The GPS devices made just for pets are generally small enough to be attached to a dog or cat collar which allows Owners to track their furry companion’s every paw print in real-time.

GPSThe New Jersey Star-Ledger points out unlike microchips embedded in the skin of an animal which store identifying information, these devices aren’t invasive, and owners don’t have to wait for a stranger to find and bring their lost pet to an animal shelter to scan the chip.

“This could easily be a multi-million-dollar category,” David Lummis, a “pet market analyst,” at New York-based market research firm Packaged Facts, recently told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. Dog owners are now more “crazy” about their four-legged friends than ever. If the recession is any indication, Mr. Lummis told the paper that the $58 billion pet products industry has merely slowed a few percentage points during the recession.

tagg logoThat kind of consistent growth has attracted the attention of Qualcomm (QCOM) the biggest maker of mobile phone chips.  San Diego-based Snaptracs, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, has released Tagg the Pet Tracker.

The rechargeable Tagg device can be attached to a collar (provided it’s not a spiked or bejeweled one), plus a home base unit. Owners are able to set a virtual perimeter for the dog to wander. TR says a text message or email alert will be sent if Fido strays too far. The device has a battery life of some 30 days and is water-resistant; it’s intended for dogs (or cats) 10 pounds or heavier. The necessary hardware and one year of Verizon (VZ) service cost $200 according to Technology Review. The service costs $5 a month after that. It’s a small price to pay, Dave Vigil, president of Snaptracs told the paper, considering pets are becoming increasingly “like family members.” Users can also find their pets at any time through a computer or smartphone.

Jessie and WileyGPS giant Garmin (GRMN), has also entered the dog lo-jack market. The paper says the Olathe, Kansas-based company released the GTU 10 device, a 1.7-ounce gadget. Garmin users can also set up a perimeter and receive alerts, or track real-time from a mobile device or computer. The GTU 10 operates on AT&T‘s (T) wireless network and costs $200 for the first year and $50 a year after that.

Another competitor is Retriever. TR says Retriever has similar functions with virtual fences and alerts but adds a social networking element. Retriever will share Spot’s location with a friend, presumably so if your dog gets loose while you’re out-of-town, you can help steer the on-site rescue. To judge from its site, Retriever appears to not yet be on the market, nor is a projected price listed.

Technology Review also notes other products in this niche. Global Pet Finder, is not available any more on Amazon (AMZN) as of this article. The SpotLight device costs $169.99 and is limited to T-Mobile coverage. SpotLight costs $179.88 per year for a subscription. The Love My Pets device and 1-year subscription cost $189.95 use the Sprint (S) network. The Love My Pets system costs $14.95 per month for a subscription according to a CSR.

Qualcomm’s goal is to encourage new uses of its radio chips, not to make a hit product. These products are part of the Internet of Things. As the Apple (AAPL) iPod and iPhone have shown, people are willing to shell out a lot of cash for things, but it is in the services where the money is to be made on the Internet of Things. Content is still king.

Twine Sensor Connects Household Objects to the Internet Tested.com notes a Kickstarter project from two MIT Media Lab alums who developed a way to make the Internet of Things more available. A small, durable “Twine” sensor listens to its environment and reports back over Wi-Fi. The creators hope their new product will let regular users, even those without programming knowledge, digitally manage their surroundings.

A basic Twine unit senses temperature and motion, but other options like moisture detection, a magnetic switch, and more can be added using a breakout board. The various sensors and built-in Wi-Fi can be powered by either a mini-USB connection or two AAA batteries, which will keep it running for months. Twine readings get wirelessly loaded into the appropriately named Spool web app, where users can set simple if-then triggers that create SMS messages, tweets, emails, or specially configured HTTP requests.

For a donation of $99 or more will get you a basic unit when they ship in March.

To keep in contact with the Smart Frrridge all you have to do is to pick up your mobile phone and call. It will be able to suggest a menu that uses the foods inside and generate a shopping list of the missing ingredients and place the order online.

The Smart Frrridge cab also be used to watch television, listen to music, to take a photograph, save it to an album, or post it to a website, or send it to an email recipient. The comes with a docking station you can just dock in your Apple (AAPL) iPod or iPhone and start using all your favorite cooking apps.

SCADA: How Big a Threat?

Cyber attackerThere are reports of two recent cyber attacks on critical infrastructure in the US. Threatpost says the hacker who compromised the water infrastructure for South Houston, TX, said the district used a three-letter password, making it easy to break in.

There are also reports that a cyberattack destroyed a water pump belonging to a Springfield, IL water utility. There are mixed reports that an attacker gained unauthorized access to that company’s industrial control system.

According to DailyWireless, Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) software monitors and controls various industrial processes, some of which are considered critical infrastructure.

Researchers have warned about attacks on critical infrastructure for some time, but warnings became reality after a highly complicated computer worm, Stuxnet, attacked and destroyed centrifuges at a uranium enrichment facility in Iran.

German cybersecurity expert Ralph Langner found Stuxnet, the most advanced worm he had ever seen. The cybersecurity expert warns that U.S. utility companies are not ready to deal with the threat.

In a TED Talk Langner stated that “The leading force behind Stuxnet is the cyber superpower – there is only one, and that’s the United States.”

In a recent speech at the Brookings Institution, he also made the bigger point that having developed Stuxnet as a computer weapon, the United States has in effect introduced it into the world’s cyber-arsenal.

New NIST Report Sheds Some Light On Security Of The Smart Grid

NISTDarkReading reports the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a report (PDF) by the Cyber Security Coordination Task Group. The report from the Task Group which heads up the security strategy and architecture for the nation’s smart power grid includes risk assessment, security priorities, as well as privacy issues.

The smart grid makes the electrical power grid a two-way flow of data and electricity allows consumers to remotely monitor their power usage in real-time to help conserve energy and save money. DarkReading says researchers have raised red flags about the security of the smart grid. Some have already poked holes in the grid, including IOActive researcher Mike Davis, who found multiple vulnerabilities in smart meters, including devices that don’t use encryption nor do they authenticate users when updating software. He was able to execute buffer overflow attacks and unleash rootkits on smart meters.

Tony Flick, a smart grid expert with FYRM Associates, at Black Hat USA talked (PDF) about his worries over utilities “self-policing” their implementations of the security framework. “This is history repeating itself,” Mr. Flick said in an interview with DarkReading.

According to DarkReading, the report recommends smart grid vendors carry out some pretty basic security practices:

  • Audit personally identifiable information (PII) data access and changes;
  • Specify the purpose for collecting, using, retaining, and sharing PII;
  • Collect only PII data that’s needed;
  • Anonymize PII data where possible and keep it only as long as necessary;
  • Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) must set up protections against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks;
  • Network perimeter devices should filter certain types of packets to protect devices on an organization’s internal network from being directly affected by denial-of-service attacks;
  • The AMI system should use redundancy or excess capacity to reduce the impact of a DoS;
  • AMI components accessible to the public must be in separate subnetworks with separate physical network interfaces;
  • The AMI system shall deny network traffic by default and allows network traffic by exception;
  • Consumers’ access to smart grid meters be limited. Authorization and access levels need to be carefully considered.

Medicine Talk M2MDon’t worry about Big Brother, it’s Big Pharma that gets the latest award for invading your space. Dailywireless.org reports that drugmaker Pfizer (PFE) wants to boost the profitability of its cholesterol-lowering Lipitor by calling you to nag remind you to take your medicine. According to Dailywireless.org if every Lipitor pill prescribed were taken, Pfizer expects that to increase its sales of the cholesterol-lowering drug by an extra $7 billion a year. Pfizer intends to use Vitality GlowCaps to grow its Lipitor business to $17 billion a year.

Pfizer logoVitality GlowCaps, are a wireless, Internet-connected bottle cap, that uses light and sound to alert users and phones home if they forget to take their medicine. Vitality and automated communication company Varolii, developed the GlowCap. The Glowcap has an embedded computer chip that communicates via low-frequency RF with a cellular-connected nightlight. The nightlight sends information to Vitality via a GE864-QUAD chip from Telit, a leader in the machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, over AT&T‘s (TGSM/GPRS network.

If a user misses a dose, an alarm will sound that gradually escalates “from a three-note arpeggio to an 11-note arpeggio,” Vitality President Josh Wachman told MobiHealthNews. The GlowCap can also flash a light, play a ringtone, send text messages or e-mails and even call the user’s mobile phone to remind them to take their medicine. The Dailywireless.org says that if the GlowCap remains unopened long enough, a patient will receive an automated call that asks a series of questions on why they didn’t take their medicine. GlowCaps also include a button that starts a call between the user’s phone and their pharmacy when the medication needs to be refilled.

Vitality GlowCapsVitality CEO David Rose told MobiHealthNews that the company was developing an iPad app for its pharma brand managers to help them track in real-time the success of their GlowCap programs. As part of the deal, Vitality gave away iPads to any GlowCap customer.  Mr. Rose said the freebies went to pharmacies and insurers. They distributed more than 10,000 GlowCaps to their customers. “With the secure app, they can see adherence patterns as they emerge, every day, in real-time. For example, they can see the total value higher adherence creates for the brand. The resulting cost-savings, in the case of insurers. Even how adherence varies by demographic slice or geography (media market),” Mr. Rose wrote.

The AT&T cellular-enabled GlowCaps which can be bought at CVS.com but no longer at Amazon.com comes with the night-light that connects wirelessly to AT&T’s cellular network, a bottle cap, and a six-month subscription to the service. After six months, subscriptions cost $15 a month.

According to RCR Wireless, “Connected Healthcare” is a term used to describe a model for healthcare delivery that uses technology to give healthcare remotely. Connected healthcare is a sub-set of all Machine to Machine (M2M) devices which are expected to increase by 36 percent this year. Utilities, healthcare, and securities industries will lead the charge to a total of 2.1 billion “connected M2M devices” by 2020, according to research from Analsys Mason.
