Are Your Earbuds Twisted?Does this sound familiar? You are about to walk the dog, grab your iPod and have to spend the next 5 minutes untangling the $%*&@ earbuds. It seems to happen to everyone who owns an Apple iPod or iPhone your “EarPods.” (even though Apple has shipped its white in-ear headphones with every iDevice since the iPod in 2001, they updated its earbuds to “EarPods” in 2012)

Your earbuds have conspired against you. Whatever you call them, the earbuds have mysteriously tangled themselves into a knot so vicious that you risk snapping the wire to get them undone. Especially the little thin wires that go to each earpiece.

Tangled earphonesTo be fair, Jim Edwards at the Business Insider says it happens to all earbuds, not just Apple’s (AAPL). But iPhone tangles seem more visibly conspicuous because their wires are white as part of Apple’s branding. BI observes that the knots even occur when you coil them carefully before putting them away. Typically the headphone wires will knot themselves on a daily basis.

Earbuds tangle for a reason

Mr. Edwards explains that tangling happens for a reason, and it has been the subject of scientific research. Dorian M. Raymer and Douglas E. Smith of the University of California at San Diego Department of Physics proved that iPhone earbud tangles are predictable. The tangle is a function of the length of the wire and the amount of “agitation” the wire is subjected to. The author explains that when — length versus agitation — are plotted against each other, the rate of knots and tangles obeys a statistical pattern that describes a curve.

Their research revealed that the length of a cord influences how much it will tangle when sealed inside a rotating box. The length of Apple’s iPhone earbuds is 55 inches long and right at the 50% tangle-rate-sweet-spot of the curve.

BI provided a schematic showing how a cord that starts off neatly coiled and quickly becomes tangled. The tangle test shows that one end of a wire only has to cross another part of the wire twice to start spontaneously knotting itself. The research shows that your earphones are indeed spontaneously knotting themselves. The knots really do form as a matter of physics, so it is an unstoppable force of nature that can’t be prevented.

That is until Professor Robert Matthews of Aston University in England saved the day. Rebecca Borison at BI says the physicist has developed a surefire way to end all earbud tangling: clip them together.

spontaneous knottingProfessor Matthews suggests that you clip the two earbuds together and attach them near the audio jack to create a loop. He claims that this will reduce tangling tenfold. He told ABC News,

First, by forming the loop you’ve effectively reduced the length of string able to explore the 3-D space by 50%, which makes a big difference. Second, you’ve also eliminated the two ends, which are the prime movers of knot formation.

CNET says the tangled earbuds research has attracted interest from biochemists concerned with the tendency of thread-like DNA to get itself tangled. The new study suggests nature may form loops in DNA to prevent this from happening.

How are you going to protect your network?

Will iOS 8 Crush Your Network?TechRadar speculates that Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 8 will be released on September 10 and MacWorld UK reports that iOS 8 will run on most iPads, iPhones, or iPod Touch devices when it arrives. This means that if you haven’t already done something about it any iDevice that walks into your Wi-Fi will want to download 100+ megabytes of data. And you know what means user complaints that the internet is broken and the network is slow.

iOS 8 will cruch your networkThe folks at Exinda, a supplier of policy-based WAN Orchestration recently put out some suggestions on how to keep your network functional during Apple’s (AAPL) iOS 8 update madness, unlike the iOS 7 release last year. Few organizations were prepared for the effects that widespread software updates would have across corporate and educational networks.

Shortly after the software launch, download requests bombarded networks which prevented users from accessing key applications or completing work on time. Boston-based Exinda says reports from last year showed that the iOS 7 update used more than 60% of bandwidth and caused several networks to crash completely.

Exinda logoExinda polled their community of networking experts to weigh in with three possible strategies to help you survive release week, no matter how complex your IT environment is.

Set an iOS policy

Set a policy to completely block software upgrades 20% of Exinda customers said that controlling iOS 7 upgrades was their biggest IT headache last year. If iOS 7 put a huge strain on your network last year, proactively blocking this year’s software release may be the best way to protect your network.

complaints that the internet is brokenBefore release week, simply create a policy using the Apple Software Updates application signature and set it to discard the traffic. This will cause all network traffic generated from iOS 8 to be discarded, effectively keeping your users from upgrading their devices on your network.

Limit the bandwidth software upgrades use

Depending on your network and users, you may have no choice but to let some of your users upgrade their devices during peak hours, particularly if you’re a school with a 1:1 iPad program. To control the amount of bandwidth iOS 8 can use on your network, set a policy that guarantees minimum and maximum levels of bandwidth that can be consumed during this upgrade. We recommend setting the minimum at 1 Kbps and giving this policy a low priority so it does not take precedence over your more important traffic.

Three stratgiesBruce Miller, vice president of product marketing at Xirrus in a Fierce Mobile article, advised IT administrations to deploy Wi-Fi network application control software that regulates how the network handles bandwidth-hogging apps and spikes in traffic.

IT needs to be savvy at the application level, identify when something like this happens and then be able to apply QoS [quality of service] or prioritization to applications, not just to users.

Cache iOS software upgrades

Cache software upgrades at the network edge – Last year many Exinda customers cached the iOS download at the network edge, which allowed their users to upgrade their devices without using too much bandwidth or hurting network performance. To do this, create a new policy to cache the iOS 8 upgrade. This means that after the software has been downloaded on the network once, each subsequent download request will be served up locally, letting you preserve your bandwidth and prevent network outages.

The release of iOS 7 last year blindsided many IT managers. Large numbers of employees upgrading their devices at the same time caused many networks to crash, leaving users unable to access key apps or get work done on time.

I also blogged about how The NCAA Basketball and World Cup tournaments would be huge bandwidth wasters here. IT managers need to be more alert to events outside their network that can overwhelm the corporate network.

IPv6 Compromise Smartphones Users' PrivacyNow that the IPv4 address pool is depleted and the IPocalypse is at hand, wrinkles are emerging in IPv6.  One of the wrinkles is with mobile devices. Most of the cool mobiles devices have been able to handle IPv6 for a while. Apple’s (AAPL) iPhones, iPads, and iPods have been capable of handling IPv6 Since version 4 of the iOS operating system and most Google (GOOG) Android devices have been capable since version 2.1. H  Security is reporting that these mobile operating systems send information about their users to the network.

Smartphone risksA device on an IPv6 network usually determines half of their address (the “interface identifier”) themselves, but H Security says that smartphones are sloppy with this task. According to the article, smartphones simply add the same two bytes to their globally unique MAC address and use it as their identifier. As a result, they transfer a unique hardware ID whenever they communicate with an IPv6-enabled server.

The basic problem isn’t an IPv6 issue because there are other methods for generating the address. The article says that a device can generate a random interface identifier and replace it on a regular basis. This is called the Privacy Extensions method and is the factory-set option in Windows; it can also be enabled in other operating systems. The article points out that devices running Apple’s iOS or Android offer neither the option to enable Privacy Extensions nor the option to disable IPv6, anyone who uses an affected device on an IPv6-enabled wireless network will send their ID.

IPocalypseThe only thing the smartphones are lacking is a control option in the user interface, as the Privacy Extensions do come as part of their kernel. For instance, on a (jailbroken) iOS 4 device with root access, they can be enabled with the same command that enables them on a desktop device running Mac OS X:

sysctl -w net.inet6.ip6.use_tempaddr=1

The blog claims the problem is only affecting a small number of users because IPv6 is not yet in widespread use. However, more ISPs plan to offer IPv6 in addition to the old IPv4 in the future. In addition, there are routers like the Cisco (CSCO) Linksys E3000, which will automatically set up an IPv6 connection via a 6to4 conversion when their internet access is purely IPv4.

The author concludes that the issue is particularly sensitive because such devices tend to be used by one specific person. As a result, the MAC address, which is accessible to any server operator and network monitor, allows this user to be identified.

The Huffington Post reports that the master of the one-note guitar solo says he was discussing a Hi-Fi iPod type device with the late Steve Jobs.

Instead, he used a physical format well-known to have better sound. “Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music. His legacy is tremendous,Young said. “But when he went home, he listened to vinyl (albums).

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Young says that he spoke with Jobs about creating a high fidelity format that has 20 times better than files in the most current digital formats, including MP3.

Neil YoungSuch a format, he said, would contain 100 percent of the data of music as it is created in a studio, as opposed to 5 percent in compressed formats including Apple’s AAC. Each song would be huge, and a new storage and playback device might only hold 30 albums. Each song would take about 30 minutes to download, which is fine if you leave your device on overnight, he said. “Sleep well. Wake up in the morning. Play some real music and listen to the joy of 100 percent of the sound of music,” he said.

Although Young didn’t have a practical plan for developing such a format – saying it’s for “rich people” to decide – he said Jobs was on board with the idea before he died. “I talked to Steve about it. We were working on it,” Young said. “You’ve got to believe if he lived long enough he would eventually try to do what I’m trying to do.

Apple iPod NanoWalt Mossberg, a journalist with News Corp.’s All Things D website, which hosted Jobs at its conferences confirmed Young’s opinion of Jobs. Mossberg said Jobs expressed surprise that “people traded quality, to the extent they had, for convenience or price.

An Apple Inc. spokesperson declined to comment to the HuffPost.

Neil Young and Bill Ford

Neil Young and Bill FordBill Ford, executive chairman of Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Company (F), was recently approached by audiophile Neil Young to build Hi-Fi digital audio into Ford cars according to Mother Nature News.  “Three months ago, Neil Young came to see me with a music proposal for cars,” Ford told the New York Times’ Jim Motavalli during the Detroit Auto Show. “Today’s digital MP3 format is horrible,” he quotes Young as saying. “The only truly good format is the vinyl LP —you can hear my fingers bearing down on the frets.

Ford Motor CompanyThe Rock and Roll Hall of Famer releases his archival material in Blu-ray and wanted Ford to put music-friendly Blu-ray players in cars, but it’s a hard sell according to the article. “We looked into at Young’s stuff but it wasn’t that user-friendly,” said Ford. “We decided it was a music format that only real purists would know about.

MNN reports that if you want the definitive version of Neil Young Archives, Vol. 1: 1963-1972 you have to cough up $349 for the 11-disc Blu-ray box. The CDs are just $100, and probably good enough for mere mortals. CNET says don’t waste your money:

The Blu-ray features ultrahigh resolution 24-bit /192 kHz stereo sound, which you can play over some newer AV receivers, but I’m not so sure that any high-end electronics can access the superduper-sounding PCM track … Don’t buy the Blu-ray box for the sound; the DVDs are fine.

Neil YoungCNN reported a year ago that Apple (AAPL) has talked with record executives about making high-def files compatible with iPods, and there’s probably a market for that among the same kind of people who pay a premium for “virgin vinyl” records.

While I enjoy Brother Neil’s music, I already own After The Gold Rush, Live Rust, Rust Never Sleeps and Freedom in four formats, vinyl, cassette, CD, and some of the tunes on iPod why would I want another one? How good is it going to sound in the car while I’m driving down US-23 at 75 MPH? Sorry Neil not for me.
