Rockin’ at the Office

Rockin' at the OfficeAfter the COVID-19 lockdowns, there is a “new normal” emerging in the workplace. The pandemic changed a lot of things, including the nature of office work. In the old workplace, the firm’s focus was worker productivity. However, the pandemic has shown that health is important as it allows staff to work better. One of the things that should change in the new normal work environment is music in the office.

Music at the office helps keep focus There are a number of benefits of listening to music  Music is not just a source of pleasure but there are benefits for the employer and the employee from listening to music at work.

Music at the office helps keep focus

The modern job can be a drudge. The mundane day-to-day office tasks can drag down most people. To make the office more stressful, 70% of U.S. office space is open concept. The open workspaces’ lack of privacy can make the office people feel stressed and decrease their productivity.

Music at the office helps keep focusIn order to offset the lack of privacy, firms should allow employees to plug in their earphones and listen to music. Listening to music can help the cube dwellers feel happier and more productive. Background music enhances performance on cognitive tasks, improves accuracy, and enables the completion of repetitive tasks more efficiently.

Researchers studying how background music affects performance on repetitive tasks found it boosted efficiency. Music in the background while working can help a person concentrate better. Research shows that music can help in improving the processing speed of the brain. This is especially true if you can choose your own music. Office workers that are allowed to listen to their preferred choice of music complete tasks more quickly and come up with better ideas than those who have no control over their sound environment. So, next time when you are working make sure to play some music in the background that will help in boosting your mental performance.

Fight stress at work with music

Fight stress at work with musicMost employees feel job-related stress. Music can be an easy and effective stress-buster. Research confirms that music around 60 beats per minute can cause the brain to synchronize with the beat causing alpha brainwaves (frequencies from 8 – 14 hertz or cycles per second). This alpha brainwave is what is present when we are relaxed and conscious. Researchers at Stanford University have said that “listening to music seems to be able to change brain functioning to the same extent as medication.” Listening to music also reduces stress by lowering the stress hormone cortisol

The effect of music on the memory

We all receive and process an avalanche of important and trivial information at work or on our own time. Where did I put my keys? Is that car going to stop? When is my next meeting?

After a point, there is a saturation point of all human beings. When it becomes difficult to remember everything studies suggest that music is also very effective in improving and enhancing the memory of a person. However, this depends on a number of factors such as the type of music that you choose to listen to. Though there are positive results of people being able to remember better when they work listening to music, these results vary. As each of us is different and have different brain functioning.

Music in the office motivates

Music in the office motivatesWe have all been there. There are times when we lack the motivation to work around here it is frequently called February. When you lack the motivation to work, it is time to listen to some music. It is seen that when people listen to fast-paced music, it helps them feel motivated and helps a person work harder.

This is why people working out prefer listening to fast-paced music. Choosing the right tempo of the music leaves a deep impact on the brain and helps motivate a person. However, each person will have a different taste in music.

Music has a positive impact on mood

There are times when a person can feel low. At such times, it can also affect the way we deal with clients and customers. Many studies show that listening to music can help in improving the mood of a person. One of the ways music affects mood is by stimulating the formation of certain brain chemicals. Listening to music increases the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Dopamine is produced in your body when you listen to a song you really like. It’s the same brain chemical responsible for the feel-good states obtained from eating chocolate, orgasm, or runner’s high. It is dopamine that could put you in a better mood at work and make you more productive. Increased dopamine can also improve your alertness and make you feel less tired.

Enjoying music stimulates the brain hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin has been called the “trust molecule” and the “moral molecule” since it helps us bond with and trust others. There’s evidence that the oxytocin bump experienced by music lovers can make them more generous and trustworthy

rb-

Music leaves a deep impact on the minds of people. It is very effective in helping people feel focused on their tasks and stay productive all day long. Office employees seem to enjoy listening to music when they work as it helps with stress and getting better brain activity.

What You Should Know About the Laws of Stupid

What You Should Know About the Laws of StupidHave you ever wondered why there are so many stupid people in the world? Or felt frustrated by the irrational and harmful actions of others? Have you ever wished there was a way to understand and deal with stupidity? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you might be interested in reading the work of Carlo M. Cipolla. In 1976, the professor of economic history at the University of California, Berkeley published an essay outlining the fundamental laws of stupidity.

In “The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity,” he proposed five universal laws that explain how stupidity affects society and individuals. The Professor’s five laws of stupidity affect every aspect of society and have profound consequences for human history and well-being. The laws of stupidity are:

Law 1: Everyone always and inevitably underestimates the number of stupid people in circulation

Flock of SheepLaw 1 means that we tend to assume that most people are rational and sensible. Sadly, we are often surprised by the amount of stupidity we encounter in our daily lives. Cipolla argued that stupidity is not related to any other characteristic. According to Cipolla, it doesn’t matter whether you are an entry-level employee, a consultant, or the CEO. We can find stupid people in every group and situation.

Law 2: The probability that a person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person

Law 2 says that a stupid person acts in a way that is detrimental to both others and himself, without any logical reason or advantage. Cipolla claimed that this is the essence of stupidity and that it is different from other types of behavior.

Law 3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or group of people when they do not benefit and may even suffer losses

This law also introduces three other categories that, according to Cipolla, coexist with stupidity. He also classified people into four categories based on their behavior: helpless, intelligent, bandit, and stupid.

  1. Helpless people contribute to society but are taken advantage of by others, especially bandits. And so their contribution is limited.
  2. The intelligent contribute to society and leverage their contributions into reciprocal benefits. Their actions lead to a net gain to society.
  3. A graph with two axes: Benefit/harm to others (vertical) and benefit/harm to self (horizontal). The graph is divided into four quadrants: upper right (intelligent), upper left (bandit), lower right (helpless), and lower left (stupid).Bandits pursue their own self-interest and enrich themselves, even when doing so poses harm to society.
  4. The stupid always contribute to a net loss to society. Their actions also frustrate, anger, and confuse everyone else. Stupid people do not follow any logic or norms. They act on impulse and emotion. A stupid person is not someone who makes a mistake or acts foolishly once in a while. For example, the Facebook friend who cannot stop sharing fake news. Stupid.

Law 4: Non-stupid people always underestimate the destructive power of stupid individuals

Non-stupid people tend to ignore or tolerate the actions of stupid people, thinking that they are harmless or negligible. However, Cipolla warned that this is a mistake because stupid people can cause serious damage to individuals and society, especially when they are in positions of power or influence.

Law 5: A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person

Cipolla argued that a stupid person is more harmful than a bandit. A bandit may have some limits or rationality in his actions, while a stupid person has none. He explained that a stupid person can ruin everything for everyone, including himself, without any benefit or reason. Therefore, he concluded that we should avoid stupid people as much as possible, and never underestimate their potential for destruction.

The problem for the rest of us

According to Cipolla, these laws are irrefutable and apply to every human being, regardless of their intelligence, education, social status, or profession.

The problem for non-stupid people is we forget that at all times and under any circumstances dealing and/or associating with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake. We assume that everyone has some common sense and some self-interest. We expect that if they behave reasonably and fairly with others, others will reciprocate. We are wrong.

Cipolla argued that stupidity is not only a personal problem but also a social problem because it lowers the well-being of society as a whole. He also warned that there is no defense against stupidity because it is unpredictable, irrational, and contagious.

He concludes that we can do nothing about the stupid. The only way a society can avoid being crushed by the burden of its idiots is if the non-stupid work even harder to offset the losses of their stupid brethren.

rb-

Cipolla’s theories can also help you recognize and avoid stupidity in yourself and others. Or at least cope with it better. They can help to protect ourselves from their harmful actions and to cope with their inevitable presence.

And remember: don’t be stupid!

Grumpiness it’s a Good Thing

Grumpiness it a Good ThingGrumpiness is the feeling of being slightly annoyed. He all know grumpiness when we see it. The average U.S. adult will be in a bad mood 300 times a year. People can be grumpy for various reasons. According to the interwebs, some of these reasons are: Lack of sleep, Being hangry, Health problems, and Stress. However. Grumpiness could be the secret to success. Meredith Bennett-Smith explains in a article on Quartz that grumpiness has benefits for your job.

professor of psychologyThe author cites studies that say that feeling slightly down seems to make some people more attentive and detail-oriented in their thinking. Joseph Forgas a professor of psychology at the University of New South Wales says that the connection between irritation and attentiveness has evolutionary underpinnings. Mild negative moods can lead to us being more observant, and paying more attention to detail. “Negative mood operates as a mild alarm signal, informing us that we face a new, unfamiliar and potentially problematic situation, and so subconsciously produce a more attentive and focused thinking style.

Advantages of grumpiness

PessimistEvidence suggests that pondering the worst has some clear advantages. Pessimists may be superior negotiators, more discerning decision-makers and cut their risk of having a heart attack. They can expect more stable marriages, higher earnings and longer lives – though, of course, they’ll anticipate the opposite. At the center this is the fact that our feelings are adaptive. They have they evolved to serve useful functions and help us thrive.

In a 2009 study Matthijs Baas at the University of Amsterdam found that students that were “a bit angrier” but not “driven to full-blown fits of rage,” produced more ideas. Their contributions were also more original, repeated by less than 1% of the study’s participants. They were better at moments of haphazard innovation, or so-called “unstructured” thinking. Professor Baas explains. “Anger really prepares the body to mobilize resources – it tells you that the situation you’re in is bad and gives you an energetic boost to get you out of it.”

The brain

The brainTo understand how this works, first we need understand with what’s going on in the brain. When you face stressful situations, your body releases hormones which prepare you for action. Then it’s up to chemical signals in the brain to get you riled up. The brain release different hormones when you are grumpy. Some of these hormones are:

  • Cortisol: This is a stress hormone that is released when we feel threatened or anxious.
  • Adrenaline: This is another stress hormone that is released when we face danger or excitement.
  • Testosterone: This is a sex hormone that is associated with dominance and aggression.

It is believed that this physiological response has evolved primarily to prepare the body for physical aggression. However,  this reaction is also known to have other benefits. It boosts motivation and gives people the intestinal fortitude to take mental risks. In fact, scientists are increasingly recognizing that grumpiness may be beneficial to the full range of social skills – improving language skills, memory and making us more persuasive. Professor Forgas explains. “Negative moods indicate we’re in a new and challenging situation and call for a more attentive, detailed and observant thinking style.”

Grumpiness encourages people to act better

In line with this, research has also found that feeling slightly down enhances our awareness of social cues. Professor Forgas used the dictator game to demonstrate that grumpiness encourages people to act in a better way towards others. The dictator game is a simple economic game that tests how people behave when they have the power to allocate resources between themselves and others.

It turns out that happier participants keep more of the prize for themselves. While those in a sad mood are significantly less selfish. “People who are feeling slightly down pay better attention to external social norms and expectations, and so they act in a fairer and just way towards others,” says Forgas.

Defensive Pessimism

Grumpiness creates a “Defensive pessimism” outlook. Murphy’s Law, the universal constant that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong is at the center of Defensive pessimism. By anticipating the worst, you can be prepared when it actually happens.

Defensive PessimismDefensive pessimism works like this. As an example, you have a presentation due at work. With defensive pessimism all you do is think of the worst possible outcomes. There is a traffic jam heading in to the office, your are late for the meeting, your PPT file is corrupt, your boss is going to ask hard questions. These worries spin and spin in your brain. So you need to think of some solutions to be prepared. As Andy Grove wrote, Only the paranoid survive.

Happiness is not the answer

Happiness carries far more serious risks that grumpiness. Happiness is associated oxytocin, the cuddle hormone. Studies have shown that oxytocin reduces our ability to identify threats. It prevents us paying due attention to dangers such as binge drinking, overeating and unsafe sex.

Happy hazeHappiness functions like a shorthand signal that we’re safe and it’s not necessary to pay too much attention to the environment,” Professor Forgas says. Those in a continuous happy haze may miss important cues. Instead, they may be over-reliant on existing knowledge – leaving them prone to serious errors of judgement. In one study, Forgas and colleagues found that those in a good mood were less able to think skeptically and were significantly more gullible.

Gabriele Oettingen from New York University found that optimism about the future may have the most ironic effects. Positive fantasies about the future can be profoundly de-motivating. She says, “People feel accomplished, they relax, and they do not invest the necessary effort to actually realize these positive fantasies and daydreams.

rb-

Grumpiness is good for you. The next time someone tells you to “cheer up” tell them you are improving your improving language skills, memory, persuasiveness, and sense of fairness. Then you can have the last cynical laugh.

Quick Microsoft Teams Shortcuts to Increase Your Productivity in 2023

Quick Microsoft Teams Shortcuts to Increase Your Productivity in 2023Microsoft Teams saw a huge uptick in users during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and the growing practices of social distancing and working from home. Rising from 20 million users in November 2019 to 44 million in March 2020, then 75 million by April. Teams has managed to retain these users post pandemic, and has grown considerably since. In 2022, Microsoft announced that Teams reached 115 million daily active users (DAU). Stats from 2018 say that the average meeting lasts 48 minutes. That makes for a lot of time spent in Teams. The following are tips and tricks to be more productive when using Teams.

Command Teams to do your bidding

Command Teams to do your biddingCommands are shortcuts for performing common tasks in Teams. You can use Teams commands to update your status, go to a specific channel, show your recent files and saved messages, and more. To use a command, type “/” and then your command in the command box at the top of Teams.

Command What it does
/available Set your status to available.
/away Set your status to away.
/busy Set your status to busy.
/call Call a phone number or Teams contact.
/dnd Set your status to do not disturb.
/files See your recent files.
/goto Go right to a team or channel.
/help Get help with Teams.
/join Join a team.
/keys See keyboard shortcuts.
/org See someone's org chart.
/testcall Check your call quality.
/unread See all your unread activity.
/whatsnewSee what's new in Teams.

Manage Notifications

Manage Teams NotificationsThe stream of notifications in Teams can feel a little overwhelming, especially when you need to focus on an important task. There are a few simple ways to reduce interruptions.

Update your Teams-wide notifications. Click on your profile picture in Teams.

  1. Click on Settings and then Notifications
  2. Locate “Missed activities emails”
  3. Click on the pull-down and select the frequency you want to receive emails for ‘missed activity.’

Microsoft Teams Notifications page

I recommend at least “Once every hour” to reduce email volume, and pressure to check what is happening in Teams.

Block incoming calls

Teams can be very intrusive, especially when you need to focus on the immediate task at hand. You can use the /DND command to block incoming calls and notifications. Of course there are some users you want to or have to quickly respond to. In order to always get calls or notifications from these team members, you can grant them priority access. This means you’ll still receive notifications from these individuals when your status is set to ‘Do Not Disturb’.

To grant priority access in Teams, Update your Privacy. Click on your profile picture in Teams and then Settings.

  1. Click on “Privacy”
  2. Click on “Manage priority access”

Microsoft Teams Privacy page

This will bring up the page where you add specific users whose notifications will still go through even when you are in “Do Not Disturb” mode.

Will Drone Coffee Delivery Fly?

Will Drone Coffee Delivery Fly? Sitting in the drive-thru lane waiting for your morning coffee is a thing of the past. Wing, Alphabet’s drone unit has made over 100,000 drone deliveries in Australia. As the name suggests, delivery drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that are used to deliver packages, medical supplies, food and other goods. According to the Wing website, the drone deliveries have include more than 10,000 cups of fresh coffee.

Winging coffee

Wing logoThe Google moon-shot project began in 2014. The Wing drones are all-electric. The electric delivery system is green and quiet. Drone delivery works like any other delivery service like Uber Eats or DoorDash.

To order their coffee, the customer places their order through an app available in the Apple and Google stores. The coffee shop packages the cup of joe and attaches the order to the equipment. The drone then lifts off on its own. When it reaches its destination, the coffee is lowered down and unclipped, allowing for an entirely contactless experience. (Wing video) Customers can track their coffee drone delivery on their phones. Wing claims that it’s the quickest time from order to delivery recorded was two minutes and 47 seconds. Less time than it takes to brew your own coffee at home.

How Wing delivers coffee

Wing delivers coffeeThe Wing software analyses terrain, weather, and routing options to make its way over to the customer as efficiently as possible. TechRepublic reports the drones rely on a large number of Google backend systems. The backend system uses the vast computing power that is distributed across Google’s cloud of millions of servers, such as Google Maps, Earth and Street View to understand the location of buildings, roads, trees and other objects of interest to bring your coffee.

In the U.S., the Google spin-out became the first drone operator to win Federal Aviation Administration approval in 2019. Wing provides limited services in Virginia.

More coffee delivery services

You can also get your coffee delivered by drone in Oranmore, Ireland. The town of 8,000 on Ireland’s west coast is the site for a drone delivery trial by the Irish startup Manna. A half dozen Manna technicians run the trial, loading deliveries – that can weigh up to 2 kilograms – into a white paper bag, which is placed into a removable cargo bay inserted into the drone. The Manna drones can fly at 50 mph, the cruise at 260 feet to reach their destination. They can reach anywhere in the town within two minutes.

Coffee maker option in VW bugOnce over a delivery house, the Manna drone lowers to 80 feet before a hatch on its belly opens and the bag gently spirals to earth at the end of a thin rope. The company said it was normally doing between 30 and 100 deliveries a-day. The current delivery charge being trialed in approx. $5.

Other companies are working on coffee delivery drones. Matternet,a drone-focused logistics company tested its coffee delivery drone over Zurich, Switzerland in 2017. Back in 2014, the A Lab, an Amsterdam-based company demonstrated Coffee Copter, which relied on an app as the user interface for placing coffee orders in an office setting.

Other companies pursuing drone deliveries

McKinsey estimates that in 2022 more than 2,000 drone deliveries are occurring each day worldwide. They project almost 1.5 million deliveries in 2022.

Domino’s Pizza first delivered a Peri-Peri Chicken Pizza and a Chicken and Cranberry Pizza via it’s DomiCopter drone in New Zeeland in November 2016. Pizza Hut is testing drone delivery in Israel.

UPS HorseFlydrone delivery system

Delivery giant UPS has a unique approach to drone delivery. ZDnet reports that UPS is trialing its HorseFlydrone delivery system in rural areas. The UPS drone launches from the top of a UPS truck and autonomously delivers a package to a home. Meanwhile, the delivery driver can continue along the route to make another delivery, because the drone will autonomously return to the truck and dock itself recharging.

DHL has shut down their Parcelcopter delivery drone project. with the company referring in a recent blog post to “unrealistic hype” in the drone delivery industry.

Amazon has recently relaunched its Prime Air drone delivery in California and Texas.

rb-

The technology to deliver coffee by drone is here. The problem is that the FAA has banned all commercial uses of drones in the U.S. The FAA currently requires companies with exemptions, like Amazon, to have an operator with a pilot’s license keep each drone within line of sight—a mandate that makes deliveries completely uneconomical. Experts have expressed cautious optimism that the FAA, which is working on guidelines for drone deliveries, will let them fly in the U.S. – someday.

Would you let a drone fly over you with a cup of hot coffee?
