Are You Ready for the MetaverseThe metaverse is a vision of what the tech bros (think biased stakeholders with a personal interest in the success of the metaverse Sam Bankman-Fried and Elon Musk) want the next iteration of the internet to be. Their vision of the metaverse is a collection of interconnected virtual worlds. The virtual worlds are shared immersive, persistent, 3D virtual spaces. In this metaverse, they believe humans can experience life in ways they could not in the physical world (of course for money). McKinsey predicts that the metaverse can generate up to $5 trillion by 2030.

The “metaverse” lets companies dodge negative baggage associated with social media. “As long as you can make technology seem fresh and new and cool, you can avoid regulation,” researcher Joan Donovan told The Washington Post. “You can run defense on that for several years before the government can catch up.

The Metaverse requires improvements

Despite the media hype that the metaverse has received, it still requires improvements to become a reality. A recent survey by network gear maker Ciena found that 71% of professionals can see the metaverse becoming part of existing work practices in the next two years. The study also found that businesses see problems getting into the metaverse. They stated “... unreliable network performance and associated costs were cited as the top concerns holding organizations back …” Daniel Pimental, from the University of Oregon, explains that advances in several technologies are needed to make the metaverse real. He explained, “… advancements in artificial intelligence – computer vision – blockchain technology, and increased bandwidth with 5G connectivity, will form the foundation…

It needs better networks

Loading spinnerOur current networks won’t work. They take too long to deliver data. Dan Rampton of Meta says the metaverse experience will need a customer latency of less than 20 milliseconds. Latency is the delay when moving data from one place to another. In the metaverse, latency is the total delay of signal between the user and the data center that is controlling the metaverse experience. Are you old enough to remember the dreaded “buffering” screen? PCMag found that the best 5G latency in 2022 ranged from 39 – 47 milliseconds from the major carriers. Doug Dawson put the 10-20 millisecond latency into context.

  • Transmission delay is the time required to get packets from a customer to be ready to route to the Internet. He cites some of his clients who say that the latency on their fiber network typically ranges between 4 and 8 milliseconds. Cable systems are slower and can approach the 20 ms limit. Older technologies like DSL have much larger latencies. Low-orbit satellite networks, will not be fast enough to meet the 20 ms goal established by Meta. Some wireless technologies also have low latency as long as there aren’t multiple hops between a customer and the core.
  • The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance says that 5G networks should offer 10ms latency in general.
  • Processing delay is the time required by the originating ISP to sort between all of the packets received from users and route each appropriately.
  • Propagation delay is due to the distance a signal travels. It takes a lot longer for a signal to travel from Tokyo to Baltimore than it takes to travel from Baltimore and Washington DC.
  • Queuing delays are the time required at the terminating end of the transmission. Since a metaverse connection is almost certainly going to be hosted at a data center, this is the time it takes to receive and appropriately route the signal to the right place in the data center.

In 2021, Bill Gates noted that most people don’t have VR goggles and motion capture gloves to accurately represent their expression, body language, and the quality of their voice. Harvard‘s Eileen McGivney writes:

The hardware that is currently used to access metaverse experiences, like VR headsets, are not affordable and are difficult to wear for many people from groups who are underrepresented in the technology industry.

People with mobility issues will find navigating a real-time 3D avatar in the metaverse frustrating. Ms. McGivney offers some examples like people with limited mobility in their hands who will struggle with controllers. Others might have difficulty if they wear glasses. Also, most current headsets can’t be worn over head coverings or many hairstyles, like religious headscarves and natural Black hairstyles.

The metaverse is expensive

Acquiring the hardware to get on the metaverse can be expensive. Head-mounted devices (HMDs), can range from a DIY Google Cardboard that requires the user to provide a mobile phone to the Meta Quest 2 – formally known as Oculus Quest 2 which costs $1500. Mid-range devices are pricey, the HTC Vive costs $569, and the Valve Index VR costs $999.

There is no search engine in the metaverse. There is no way to find out more about what the content creators are sending you. The cost of creating content for the metaverse will keep many from presenting information that the big content creators don’t want out there. The cost to develop a metaverse social app is estimated to cost $25,000-$400,000 according to the marketing firm Appinventiv.

Interoperability

There is no unified metaverse. Companies are developing their vision of the metaverse in a vacuum. Major players are developing their own technology for the metaverse.

Then there’s the need for interoperability. Interoperability will allow you to take virtual items like clothes or money from one platform to another. Many experts believe this is vital for the metaverse to work. Most VR software is based on a “virtual world generator,” which is from a specific VR headset vendor. This kit provides the basic programs, drivers, data, and graphic-rendering libraries. There will be legal and commercial challenges too, apart from figuring out who will act as the police in the metaverse.

Cybersickness

Cybersickness in Virtual Reality Versus Augmented Reality There are real-world concerns about physical and mental health in the metaverse. There are physical risks from tripping or falling while wearing metaverse headsets. But people are also reporting symptoms of “cybersickness.” Cybersickness is described as unpleasant symptoms caused by being in the metaverse. Symptoms include:

  • Nausea (sweating, difficulty concentrating, stomach awareness),
  • Oculomotor disturbance (headache, eyestrain, blurred vision), and
  • Disorientation (dizziness with open and closed eyes, vertigo).

These are caused by the delay between actual head movements and the generated image.

Mental health risks 

There are also mental health risks. Because VR provides a much more realistic experience than watching something on a computer screen, the emotional and mental impacts are more intense. Plus, all the downsides of the current internet like violent pornography, the black market, sex trafficking, and criminal activities are magnified in VR.  Finally, people who are immersed in digital worlds often are doing so at the expense of exercising, breathing fresh air, and socializing physically.

The metaverse must be private

The metaverse must be privateDespite the promise of the metaverse, there remain risks. As Charlie Bell, Microsoft’s executive vice president of security pointed out in a recent blog post: “The problems of yesterday’s and today’s internet—impersonation, attempts to steal credentials, social engineering, nation-state espionage, inevitable vulnerabilities—will be with us in the metaverse.” Harvard’s McGivney concurs, “Many of these technologies are also designed in a commercial environment that prioritizes profit over things like data privacy

The metaverse is being developed by corporations whose business
models rely on collecting an increasingly detailed and wide range of data on every user. The technologies can track people’s
movements (e.g., movement, eye tracking) and emotions. The data collection will create a “motion signature.” A motion signature will connect some tracking data to a name, for example, now tracking data in many other places are attached to the same name. This increases the effectiveness of threats based on the inference of protected health information from tracking data.

Is that your boss

Microsoft warns that in the metaverse, fraud, and phishing attacks targeting your identity could come from a familiar face – literally. A metaverse attacker can create an avatar who impersonates a coworker, or a teller in a virtual bank lobby asking for your information. It could be an impersonation of your CEO inviting you to a meeting in a malicious virtual conference room.

TNero connected to the Matrixhe dystopian vision of a future where we are constantly connected to the metaverse to feel good is looming. Elon Musk’s implanted brain-machine interface Neuralink, can link the metaverse directly to a user’s mind which can cause the release of dopamine. Research shows that the brain may eventually begin to rely on that experience to release dopamine and feel good. As a result, people can become addicted to the metaverse to feel “normal.”

I agree with Scientific American. Given the world’s unpredictability, I have a hard time ruling out the possibility that an unholy alliance of big tech and the military will foist an implant-enabled metaverse on us. After all, as the real world gets scarier, the metaverse might become more and more appealing. In our frightening future, the metaverse, not religion, might serve as the opiate of the masses.

Will a Hologram Be Your Boss in the Future?

Bosses Will be Holograms in the FutureIs your next boss going to be a hologram? Bloomberg seems to think so. They ran an article recently about a CEO using holograms. The article explains how CEO’s are using life-size holograms to cut-down on travel. One CEO described the experience,  “It was a real ‘beam me up’ moment … I was really there.

HologramsHolograms are not new. Holography was discovered by physicist Dennis Gabor in 1951. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for for his discovery in 1971. In simple terms, a hologram is basically a recording of a 3D image that can be reproduced with the same amount of depth and detail as the original. Viewers can see the image from different angles, the same way they’d be able to see a real object.

What is a hologram

Holograms don’t require special equipment, like glasses or headsets to view. The image can be viewed from any angle, so as the user walks around the display the object will appear to move and shift realistically. Holographic images can be static, such as a picture of a product, or they may be animated sequences which can be watched by multiple people from any viewpoint.

Google and Microsoft Corp., as well as startups like HyerVSN, MDH Hologram, Musion, and VIVIDIQ are working on holographic communications services. Businesses diverse as Ford, Johnnie Walker, the NBA, Salesforce, French bank BNP Paribas and the World Wildlife Foundation are using holograms. Emergen Research predicts that the global 3D Holographic Display and Services market size will reach $3.45 billion in 2028. Larry O’Reilly, CEO of Toronto-based ARHT Media Inc., told Bloomberg:

People can’t look away … We create the illusion of 3D in a life-size person or object with no noticeable latency, which creates a sense of presence.

Result of the COVID-19 pandemic

COVID-19 lockdownsThe article says the COVID-19 pandemic caused firms to rethink the rules of work. Apparently, corporations see holograms as a way to communicate with employees and customers while cutting down on travel. Before COVID, holograms were used for concerts with mixed results. Portl founder, David Nussbaum told Bloomberg,

Holograms were never in demand for anything but entertainment until recently … Instead of digitally resurrecting dead artists, I saw holograms as a new way of communication … 

Hologram tech

Portl logoThe system featured in the article was provided by LA-based Proto (formerly Portl Inc.). The rig, called Epic, is a human-sized “portal” that produces a lifelike person in hologram. Epic lets people “beam” themselves to a location thousands of miles away and interact with people there. The author says the entire set-up cost $160,000. Portl also sells individual boxes for $65,000.

Portl also offers a 14-inch-tall home device, called Proto M which costs $5,000. The tabletop version projects a shrunken version of the subject. The company plans to release an app that will allow users to substitute a cellphone for the studio gear. Portl says it expects to sell 500 booths and 5,000 tabletop units this year.

Sherrif Karamat, CEO of the Professional Convention Management Association, has appeared as a hologram onstage with a live moderator and several others. He told the author, the conversation flowed easily, and he even elbow-bumped a fellow speaker at one point. “Holograms are here to stay, and they’ll be used more and more …

As with all emerging techs, there are two sides to the coin. The green factor of eliminating travel is good. Portl’s Nussbaum said “Without having to jump in cars and airplanes, a lot of our customers have seen their carbon footprint shrink considerably, sometimes down to around 10% of what it used to be.”

Are holograms ready for prime-time

Holograms are not ready for prime-time for a number of reasons.

  • Star WarsVendors must bring down prices sharply before it will be widely adopted. $160,000 for one systems?
  • The IEEE estimates that the bandwidth requirements for holograms will increase to be in the range of 1 Tbps. The best average 5G download speed in the U.S. is 150 Mbps. Not enough.
  • The current systems don’t offer true holograms. Rather, they provide rather two-dimensional holographic projections. Strictly speaking, holograms are meant to be 3D images projected into thin air by lasers, so you can walk around and view them from all angles. Current systems, by contrast, require the box, which creates the illusion of depth, but when viewed from the side or behind it’s … just a box.

Bad bossThen there is the bad boss factor. IMO being fired by a hologram is no better than when Better.com CEO Vishal Garg terminated 900 employees on a Zoom call just before the holidays. Or the recent chaos at Twitter as Elon Musk fired about 3,700 people via email.

VR You Can Taste

VR You Can TasteDuring the COIVD-19 lockdowns and social distancing, every generation has increased the use of their devices to inform and distract more than ever before. Wouldn’t it be great if our devices could encompass all of our senses? Well, that time is coming. Homei Miyashita a researcher at Meiji University in Japan has developed the Norimaki Synthesizer which can make the tongue sense taste without eating anything.

It was once thought that tongues had different regions for each taste.It was once thought that the tongue had different regions with concentrations of specific taste buds for each taste. Now we know that there are five basic tastes are sweet, sour (or acidic), salty, bitter, and umami. Bitter flavors are sharp, like coffee, unsweetened chocolate, or the peel of an orange or lemon. Umami is derived from the Japanese word for a pleasant savory taste, was added to the basic tastes group in 1990.

Taste buds have a chemical reaction to food

Taste buds have tiny openings that take in very small amounts of whatever we’re eating. Special “receptor cells” in the taste buds can then have a chemical reaction to the food, creating one of five basic tastes. The way these basic tastes combine creates the overall flavor of the food we’re eating.

SVCOnline explains a better understanding of how the tongue works is crucial to the new device. In order to trick your tongue, the device uses electrolytes inserted into five gels that trigger the five different tastes when they make contact with the human tongue. Gizmodo reports the color-coded gels, made from agar formed in the shape of long tubes to create tastes. The device uses:

The taste device

When the device is pressed against the tongue, the user experiences all five tastes at the same time. But, by using a small box with sliding controls the amount of different tastes can be lowered, creating different flavors. Sadly, it can’t produce the effect of spicy foods.

To create the different flavors the device is wrapped in copper foil so that when it’s held in hand and touched to the surface of the tongue, it forms an electrical circuit through the human body, facilitating a technique known as electrophoresis.

Electrophoresis is a process that moves molecules in a gel when an electrical current is applied. In this case, this process causes the ingredients in the agar tubes to move away from the tongue end of the tube, reducing the ability to taste them. It’s a subtractive process that selectively removes tastes to create a specific flavor profile – from gummy bears to sushi.

The device’s creator, Homei Miyashita, was inspired to create his “taste display” by experiments that proved our eyes can be tricked into seeing something that technically doesn’t exist. He wondered if the red, green, or blue pixels that make up the screens on your smartphone, PC, and TV could fool the eye, could he create something that could fool the tongue? Mr. Miyashita used a similar “pixel” approach o trick the tongue.

In his abstract, Professor Miyashita acknowledged the 2011 research of Hiromi Nakamura, who achieved “augmented gustation” by sending electrical charges through chopsticks, forks, and straws to create tastes humans could not perceive solely with their tongues.

Smell-O-Vision

Other inventors have tried to expand the senses for the media. In 1959, Charles Weiss, a public relations executive, created AromaRama. AromaRama distributed scents of horses, grass, exploding firecrackers, incense, and burning torches through the theater’s air-conditioning system during the first showing of “Behind the Great Wall.” But the NYT panned the movie, “Check off the novel experience as… a stunt. The artistic benefit of it is here demonstrated to be nil.”

Smell-O-VisionThe next year, inventor Hans Laube introduced an improved Smell-O-Vision with the movie “Scent of Mystery” which was augmented by smells such as freshly baked bread, wine, an ocean breeze, or a skunk delivered through beneath-the-seat tubes. Certain smells offered clues to imminent activity on the screen. But viewers complained of uneven or delayed distribution of smells, and the distracting noises of viewers struggling to sniff each scent. For fans and critics, the movie was a stinker. Famed comedian Henry Youngman quipped, “I didn’t understand the picture. I had a cold.

It’s called a taste display because it was inspired by the way RGB pixels accumulate on a screen form an image of something that isn’t there. These electronic “taste pixels” can be manipulated to simulate any taste. Why? No idea. – But there will be an app for that too!

Cornoravirus Will Make the PC Market Sick

Cornoravirus Will Make the PC Market Sick2019 was the first year of positive growth in the PC market since 2012. But tech prognosticator International Data Corporation (IDC) slashed its 2020 forecast for PC shipments. The Framingham, MA-based market researcher believes the Cornoravirus (COVID-19) effect on global supply chains will cut PC shipments in 2020 by 9%, with total shipments reaching 374.2 million for the full year.

novel coronavirusThe big drops in shipments are expected in the first half of the year, with a decline of a little over 8 percent in Q1 and nearly 13 percent in Q2. Linn Huang, an IDC research vice president, wrote in a presser.

We have already forgone nearly a month of production given the two-week extension to the Lunar New Year break and we expect the road to recovery for China’s supply chain to be long with a slow trickle of labor back to factories in impacted provinces until May when the weather improves … Many critical components such as panels, touch sensors, and printed circuit boards come out of these impacted regions, which will cause a supply crunch heading into Q2.

IDC’s definition for PCs includes desktops, notebooks, workstations, and tablets. Before the coronavirus appeared, IDC was already expecting a difficult year for PCs. 2020 sales figures had to overcome last year’s boost from the Windows 7 replacement cycle. Despite the drop in PC shipments for 2020, IDC’s long-term forecast remains slightly positive as global shipments are forecast to grow to 377.2 million in 2024

The sales decline is driven by a lack of inventory as the Chinese government ordered Foxconn and others factories to shut down in some cases until March halting production of not just finished products, but also parts and components needed for those items. The NYT reports that slightly over half the country’s population is under various kinds of lock-down. FierceElectronics reports there are already product shortages shown up.

  • The Apple (AAPL) iPad Pro tablet has limited availability at stores in the U.S., Australia, and Europe.
  • Tech product shortagesSome Facebook (FB) Oculus virtual reality headsets are “unavailable.”
  • HP‘s (HPQ) website says some Envy, Pavilion, and Slim desktop computers are out of stock.

Holy Sell Out Batman

Batman is being used to pump 5GThe Caped Crusader has sold out. While the full benefits of next-generation wireless – 5G won’t be realized until at least mid-2020, Batman is being used to pimp 5G.  AT&T used The guardian of Gotham to create demand for mixed-reality at last month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain. The mixed-reality experience featured DC Comics Batman and the Scarecrow battling it out on the MWC show floor.

Fierce Videoaugmented reality headset reports that AT&T (T), Ericsson (ERIC), Intel (INTC), and Warner Bros., with DC, are using 5G technology and edge computing to build a location-based mixed-reality experience. For the walk-in experience at MWC, visitors put on an augmented reality headset. There they witnessed a 2 to 3-minute experience.

Ade Kushimo, director of business development, IoT, and emerging business at Ericsson told Fierce Video, “The really cool part of the experience is going to be the fact that you have this virtual, digital content being embedded into your physical space. That gives you that mixed reality experience.

Sensorama (patented 1962) which was an arcade-style theatre cabinet that would stimulate all the senses, not just sight and sound.

Mixed reality experience with Batman

Doug Matheson, vice president of strategic business development at Ericsson, said the proof-of-concept experience demonstrated that 5G technology (both radio and core) could be combined with intellectual property to create a mixed reality experience that’s both mobile and untethered.

In order to create a good mixed-reality experience, image lag has to be kept to a minimum. Image lag will make you dizzy and ruin the experience. That means that compute power has to be pushed out to the edge of the network to reside closer to the end-user. The compute power needed to process a mixed reality experience can’t live in a centralized data center somewhere.

Cloud computingThe cloud and edge network architecture allows for heavy computing to be done away from the device. So, the goal is to shift processing to the cloud and transport it there using a 5G network. The Batman demo ran on a fully integrated 5G network using Ericsson radio base stations 5G network technology will help supply the lower latency and higher speeds and enabled by Intel Xeon processors and the Intel 5G mobile trial platform.

Mobile Marketer says that 5G will have a huge impact on AT&T’s mobile network. Its data traffic has grown more than 470,000% since 2007, with video making up half of the mobile data. Video may expand its share of data traffic to more than 75% by 2022, according to the company’s estimates.

Batman now works for AT&T following its acquisition of Time Warner who owned Warner Brothers, which owned DC Comics, the home of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Lex Luthor, Oswald Cobblepot, and the Flash.
