Blockchain BasicsThis is the season for predictions. Many tech prognosticators say that 2017 will be the year for Blockchain. As an emerging technology, Blockchain is approaching what Gartner (IT) calls the Peak of Inflated Expectations – a period the analyst refers to as “when early publicity produces a number of success stories — often accompanied by scores of failures. Some companies take action; many do not.”

Transform digital banking and financeJust to prove the point, Business Insider claims blockchain has the capability to transform the world of digital banking and finance — and beyond. The author suggests that the complex technical nature of blockchain makes it difficult for people to fully grasp how the technology works. BI helps blockchain novices understand exactly what blockchain is and how it works.

Blockchain is a distributed database or ledger that allows companies to start trade digitally without the need for approval from a central authority. Because blockchains are distributed, an industry or a marketplace can use them without the risk of a single point of failure.

distributed ledgerThe ledger is the central part of a blockchain. The ledger is publicly available and shared among all parties within the network. It can’t be changed or tampered with, making it secure. The ledger keeps track of all the details of a transaction, including time, date, parties involved and the transaction amount.

The article examines how the most common blockchain application, a bitcoin transaction, works.

  1. Alice decides to buy bobbles from Bob’s Bead Boutique online.
  2. Bob’s Bead Boutique accepts bitcoin.
  3. Alice has a 3rd party bitcoin wallet set up to hold her digital funds.
  4. Bob at Bob’s Bead Boutique shares his unique numerical bitcoin address with Alice.
  5. Alice makes her payment to Bob’s Bead Boutique by signing it with the private key of her own address. The transaction is called a block.
  6. The block is broadcast to everyone within the peer-to-peer network.
  7. Users who verify the buyer’s block via a process called “mining” will be rewarded with bitcoins.
  8. To verify and validate the block, miners take information from the block and run it through an algorithm.
    The approved block is attached to the previous transaction in the network.
  9. Collectively all the transactions form a blockchain that cannot be altered making it permanent and transparent
  10. The transaction is verified and completed.

disruptive technologyBI claims that the most important aspect of blockchain is its versatility. The author claims that the disruptive technology has implications far beyond bitcoin. The article points out there are more than 100 blockchain projects spread across many industries. Here are some industries blockchain could disrupt.

Banking and Financial Services – Blockchain is more secure and efficient so financial processes powered by blockchain could save banks up to $20 billion dollars annually by 2022.

Healthcare – Blockchains could allow patients to securely share their health records across a vast network of healthcare providers more securely. Preventing many of the recent healthcare data breaches.

Music –  Blockchain could potentially be used to help prevent piracy in music while also increasing sales.

Insurance – Blockchain could allow wholesale insurers to overcome complex transactions that involve a large number of participants and increase efficiency in areas like documentation and claims management.

The Brookings Institute correctly argues that Blockchain is a foundational technology, like TCP/IP, which enables the Internet. And much like the Internet in the late 1990s, we don’t know exactly how the Blockchain will evolve – but evolve it will.

Disruptive technologiesSimilar to the Internet, the Blockchain must also be allowed to grow unencumbered. This will need careful handling that recognizes the difference between the platform and the applications that run on it. TCP/IP empowers many financial applications that are regulated, but TCP/IP is not regulated as a financial instrument.

Disruptive technologies rarely fit neatly into existing regulatory considerations, but rigid regulatory frameworks have repeatedly stifled innovation.

What You Need To Know About Germs on Your Cell

What You Need To Know About Germs on Your CellOver 2.6 billion Americans now have a cell phone. And they are walking around with some nasty stuff on their phones. I’m not talking about porn or malware but real viruses. An article by Caroline Kee and Taylor Miller at Buzzfeed found that most phones are covered with some pretty scary germs.

Swab cell phones for germsThe author took swabs of people’s cell phones to prove the point. Ms. Kee shared her swabs with Dr. Susan Whittier from Columbia University. They found that all phones had germs, bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi on them, some of which are good for us and some of which are bad for us. The tests revealed that most phones had five kinds of harmless germs from the skin, mouth, nose, and environment.

Staphylococcus epidermidis (not aureus): Dr. Whittier says if you were to just swab your skin, this is what you’d find. It is normal and would get on the phone from regular daily use, like touching or talking on it.

All phones had germs, bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi on themMicrococcus: Dr. Whittier says this makes up the normal skin flora, especially on the face. Everyone has different skin bacteria; it depends on the person. It can get on your phone if you touch your face a lot or talk on it often.

Streptococcus viridians: This bug lives in the mouth and throat, so it can get on your phone from talking, your fingers after touching your lips, coughing, etc. It’s usually harmless, but it can also cause infections in vulnerable people.

Moraxella: This is from sinuses, and it’s often found in people with recurrent sinusitis or post-nasal drip. In high levels, it can cause inner ear and bloodstream infections. It’s still a pretty normal thing to find on a phone.

25,000 germs on a cell phoneBacillus: Bacillus is a common bacteria from the environment, so it’s basically a sign that you’ve been outdoors. A lot of Bacillus means the phone is super dirty.

The bad news is that pathogens – potentially disease-causing strains of bacteria – were found on some of the phones tested. This is alarming. Think – salmonella, Ebola, bird flu, etc.

The most dangerous bug found on a phone was MRSA. MRSA, the flesh-eating bacteria, is a Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics, including methicillin. It can cause serious infections in the skin and internal organs and can be fatal in vulnerable people. MRSA can spread easily between people and surfaces—often in health care settings, but it can also live on surfaces like subway handles, doorknobs, community bathrooms, showers, and especially gyms.

MRSA, the flesh eating bacteriaColumbia’s Whittier explained, “It’s a little worrisome for a phone to test positive for MRSA because it isn’t part of our normal flora.” We also know that MRSA loves to lurk on gym equipment and locker rooms, so it’s not completely abnormal to have it on your phone. About half the population carries Staph aureus with no problems. But this also makes it easy to spread between people and causes disease. Dr. Whittier warns that if Staph aureus gets into an open wound, it can cause major skin and blood infections, which can result in boils, food poisoning, toxic shock syndrome, and even death.

Poop. You’ve heard of E. coli. E. coli outbreaks have shut down restaurants like Chipotle and have caused many supermarket foods recalls. It was found on mobile phones. It’s a fecal organism, so it’s usually found in poop, but it can also live in the gastrointestinal tract along with other gut bacteria. Buzzfeed reports there are different types of E. coli, and some strains are way more pathogenic than others.  E. coli has the potential to cause serious food poisoning and even death.

E. coli infections spread through the fecal-oral route. You will get sick if you touch your mouth with contaminated hands after using the bathroom or touching fecal matter. It turns out this is very common. In 2015, Verizon found that 90% of cell phone users use their mobile phones in the bathroom. A 2013 study by Michigan State University found that just 5% of people properly washed their hands after using the bathroom.

The Columbia MD warns this is why you shouldn’t bring your phone to the bathroom or use it while eating. E. coli on a phone could be from the person’s stool if they didn’t wash their hands or another person’s stool if the phone went into a public bathroom because fecal matter sprays everywhere when the toilet flushes

Dont bring your phone to the bathroomWhat to do? Even if you’re an avid hand-washer, your phone can still pick up germs all day. The Buzzfeed article makes two recommendations to keep your phone safe. Keep your mobile phone out of the bathroom (where gross stuff like Norovirus lurks). And don’t use your cell phone while you’re eating since that can transmit bacteria and viruses to your mouth and get you sick.

How can you keep those nasty bugs off your phone? The article recommends cleaning your phone once a week using this magical “phone soap.” It’s not actually soap — it’s a charger box that shoots out UV lights that “kill 99.9% of germs using UV rays” at Amazon.

Wash your handsThe advice from 2012 on how to disinfect your cell is still the same as in 2016. Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean your iPhone. The front and back glass surfaces have an oleophobic coating. To remove fingerprints, wipe these surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth. The ability of this coating to repel oil will diminish over time with normal usage, and rubbing the screen with an abrasive material will further diminish its effect and may scratch the glass.

Smartphone Screen Kill GermsCell phones are filthy. I wrote about portable petri dishes back in November 2012. CNET found that 75% of Americans use their mobile phones in the bathroom to make calls, text, and play with apps. Your mobile phone carries more germs than a toilet seat. There is speculation that they have even spread Ebola. Now, thankfully, Corning has your back.

Gorilla Glass kills germs all by itselfEric Limernewest revision of Gorilla Glass is more resilient and kills pesky germs all by itself. Gorilla Glass covers 1.5 billion mobile phones worldwide, including all Apple (AAPL) iPhones.

Corning discussed its upcoming display tech at the MIT Mobile Technology Summit. The antimicrobial coating on the new glass can kill virtually all nasty microbes on the screen’s surface over a course of two hours. It’s not instantaneous, but it’s way better than having a pocket petri dish, Mr. Limer observed.

Signe Brewster at GigaOM wrote that during the presentation, Corning senior vice president Jeff Evenson reported that the company is working on glass that kills viruses and germs — even the drug-resistant variety. GigaOM says that the VP noted a study that found smartphones carry more microbes than the average public toilet. He displayed how the glass kills microbes over time with slides depicting them as bright green dots. After two hours, the antimicrobial glass had a million times fewer bacteria than standard phone glass. Corning’s Evenson said

“You’re eating your sandwich at your desk. Your smartphone rings. You answer it. You complete the call, put your smartphone down and you go back to eating your sandwich with the same hand. Which piece of glass do you want on that device?”

Gizmodo reports that Corning said the antimicrobial displays will be available sometime in the next two years.

And that’s not all, either. GigaOM’s Brewster also reports that Corning is developing a new transparency treatment that will make the next revision of Gorilla Glass tens of times more transparent than purified water. This should result in seeing your phone in broad daylight is about to get way easier.

Until Corning releases Gorilla Glass 3, washing your hands is a good idea, and licking your iPhone screen is probably a bad idea. In order to clean your iPhone, Apple recommends:

Sitting Is the Smoking of Our GenerationNilofer Merchant recently posted the article Sitting Is the Smoking of Our Generation at Harvard Business Review. In the article, Ms. Merchant argues that the amount of time spent sitting in meetings and watching TV has a negative impact on our health, akin to the preventable risk of smoking.

The author says people spend more time sitting than anything else throughout the day. She cites some statistics: “… we sit more than we do anything else. We’re averaging 9.3 hours a day, compared to 7.7 hours of sleep. Sitting is so prevalent and so pervasive that we don’t even question how much we’re doing it. “

There are big problems caused by sitting according to the article, health studies conclude that people should sit less, and get up and move around.

  • After 1 hour of sitting, the production of enzymes that burn fat declines by as much as 90%.
  • Extended sitting slows the body’s metabolism affecting things like (good cholesterol) HDL levels in our bodies.
  • Lack of physical activity is directly tied to 6% of the impact for heart diseases, 7% for type 2 diabetes, and 10% for breast cancer, or colon cancer.

The New York Times reported on another study, published last year in the journal Circulation that looked at nearly 9,000 Australians and found that for each additional hour of television a person sat and watched per day, the risk of dying rose by 11%. In that article, a doctor is quoted as saying that excessive sitting, which he defines as nine hours a day, is a lethal activity.

The author points out some trends to combat the negative impacts of sitting. The first is the mainstreaming of the standing desk. She concludes that, while it gets you off your duff, won’t help you get real exercise.

Additionally, Ms. Merchant describes a change she has made to her routine. “… I switched one meeting from a coffee meeting to a walking meeting… I now average four such meetings, and 20 to 30 miles each week.”

She also cites the work of James Fowler and Nicholas Christakis’s, book Connected. They observed that obesity spreads according to network effects; if your friend’s friend’s friend who lives a thousand miles away gains weight, you’re likely to gain weight, too. And if that extended friend also loses weight, even if you’re not in the same city, you’re likely to lose weight, too. Her goal, ” is to be someone who socializes the idea that physical activity matters, and that we each matter enough to take care of our health.”

The author says that her walking meetings had some unanticipated side benefits. She reports walking helps her listen to her participants. “… I can actually listen better when I am walking next to someone than when I’m across from them in some coffee shop. There’s something about being side-by-side that puts the problem or ideas before us, and us working on it together.”

Secondly, she reports that the meetings are more focused, because the iTimeWasters stay in the pocket, “the simple act of moving also means the mobile device mostly stays put away. Undivided attention is perhaps today’s scarcest resource, and hiking meetings allow me to invest that resource very differently.”

listen betterThe authors claim that the results of these off-beat meetings are positive.  “The number one thing I’ve heard people say is “That was the most creative time I’ve had in a long time” And that could be because we’re outside, or a result of walking. Research certainly says that walking is good for the brain.”

The author concludes that if you want to get out of the box thinking, you need to literally get out of the box.

If nothing else, when sitting for long periods, standing up every 20 minutes produces significant positive health benefits. I wrote about the link between inactivity and health back in 2009.

Your Smartphone Can Kill

Your Smartphone Can KillWe all love our smartphones. But did you know that your phone can kill you? And not only texting while driving can kill you and other people. A man in Uganda reportedly contracted Ebola from a mobile phone. Reports say he stole the smartphone from a quarantined ward of a hospital, near the site of a recent Ebola outbreak.

Next time you come down with the flu or Ebola, blame your cell phone. According to the London DailyMail, researchers have discovered there are more bacteria on the average smartphone than you will find in a toilet.

Tests at the University of Arizona by microbiologist Charles Gerba found there was up to 10 times the amount of bugs that can cause nausea, stomach problems, or even death on cell phones than are present in a lavatory.

The expert explains that germs are spread by phones that are often passed between people but are never cleaned which allows the germs to keep on building up. The University of Arizona researcher says the bugs get on a phone because it is so close to our hands and mouths. When somebody lets a friend or a stranger use their smartphone their bacteria easily gets on the device too.

Add to this frenzy of activity that germs thrive in warm places. Not only does your smartphone generate its own heat, but it also gets some help from your own body heat by spending time in your hands and next to your mouth.

ProGerms on your cellfessor Gerba added that because mobile devices are electronic some people are reticent about cleaning them. He says that phones are just not part of our cleaning routine whereas we should think about giving them a wipe with an antibacterial substance now and then.

In order to clean your iPhone, Apple (AAPL) says:
